Ask the Community - Island Audiology

What brands does Island Audiology carry? Are they distributors for only a few brands? At my family's urging, I am interested in the higher technology than the Costco ones I've been using which don't have the clarity for cross talking or music.

aloha! We work with all 6 major hearing aid manufacturers: Oticon, Resound, Starkey, Widex, Phonak, and Signia. This ensures we have access to the right features to benefit each individual patient. We go through a process to identify the… Read more

I wrote an unfavorable review earlier, but the problem was a communications problem and had nothing to do with Robin W.

This review is long overdue - computer issues! I got an ear…read moreinfection while on holiday abroad last year. The morning I was to fly home, I woke up deaf! You can imagine how excruciating the plane ride home was. Hoping it was just swelling, I eventually saw an ENT specialist who scheduled a hearing exam with Dr. Meghan Mueller-Schultz. Needless to say, Dr. Meghan diagnosed me with hearing loss in both ears. The right side profound, about 70% (previous loss of about 20% since 1986), the left side moderate, about 30%. I didn't need hearing aids in the past because I still had a good left ear, but I needed them now. While my ENT gave me a list of audiologists and places to check out hearing aids, I decided to go with Dr. Meghan because we had already developed a comfortable dr-patient relationship. So compassionate, she listened to my worries, answered all my questions, and was available anytime I needed to speak with her. She even called my health provider on more than 1 occasion just to verify my cost. Early on, we realized my ear canals were uber small, and I already had the smallest size. The devices were very uncomfortable, sore in fact. Dr. Meghan tried her best to make the devices as comfortable as possible. She even said if they do not work for me, I can try another type. Then Dr. Meghan played with different ear piece "cushions," and voila! Issue resolved. I highly recommend Dr. Meghan Mueller- Schultz, not only for her expertise, but also her compassion and her determination to "make-it-work" for me!

As an almost lifetime hearing aid user who has seen many audiologists in Japan, California and…read moreHawaii, I can attest that Dr. Ann Narimasu-Phomenone is one of the best. I have been her patient for the past five years and I'm very happy with the services provided by Dr. Ann and her cordial staff. Dr. Ann spent time getting to know me and to understand my hearing history. She answered my questions and explained the rationale behind the hearing aids she recommended. Her audiological evaluation report was detailed, accurate and thorough. I have never seen an audiologist who writes so extensively. Dr. Ann's practice is also very ethical and patient-centered. She only provides medically appropriate and necessary services based on her clinical assessment and judgement. Unlike many other commercial hearing aid providers, Dr. Ann doesn't charge overheads, and she only charges patients the final balance after the insurance plans and other funding sources are exhausted. This means that she only gets paid a few to several months after she purchases and fits hearing aids to her patients. Thank you so much for the excellent services, Dr. Ann!

The doctor explains everything she is doing and why she is doing it. You will feel very comfortable and quickly gain her trust because she knows what she is doing. The doctor and her staff are very well-rounded. A one-stop shop. Aside from doing hearing tests, they also fix hearing aids. Which is what we went in for. But, her hearing aids that she sells are of such great quality and affordably priced, that we will probably buy a new one. It cancels out more background noise and the doctor and staff helped to connect the hearing aid to my aunty's iPhone. So, now my aunty can hear us when we call her on her cell phone. Also, she can control the hearing aid from her cell phone. There is an option for a rechargeable hearing aid, so you dont have to hassle with changing the battery. The building and parking was very easy to find and the handicap parking is conveniently located near the entrance of her building. The office is clean and inviting. I would definitely recommend Dr. Narimasu-Phomenone to everyone!

Difficulty with Insurance claim…read more I went to HPA for a doctor-referred hearing test. Test went fine. However, since the test showed my hearing was good, HPA submitted insurance claim as 'screening', which resulted in claim being denied. ***HPA then billed me for the full service over $400!!** In adddition, **I** had to file an appeal to insurance, with no help from HPA. Insurance said HPA should resubmit claim as 'diagnostic', as that would be covered. I spoke to the Audiologist to have them resubmit claim as 'diagnostic' but the Audiologist refused, stating that my hearing was okay, so they WON'T submit the claim as 'diagnostic'. This is even though my primary care doctor REFERRED me to check my hearing. While waiting for the appeal, I asked HPA to not bill me until we hear from my appeal. They sent me a letter saying I must pay, and if Insurance pays, HPA would reimburse me. My main issues: ------------------------------- - HPA business practice made my insurance claim get denied - HPA did not help me appeal to the insurance company - HPA requested that I pay $400+ while we waited for insurance appeal - HPA would not resubmit claim as suggested by Insurance company - HPA refused to consider lowering bill if insurance appeal was denied In the end, Insurance company reviewed my appeal and granted the coverage, However, the whole HPA billing experience was time consuming and aggravating for me.

I could not finish a sentence before she constantly interrupting me rudely, and giving me orders with zero empathy or professionalism. I'm worried about the abuse my mom would get, if I send her to this service. I have called the insurance company back, and got the referral to another service. Do NOT send your loved ones here. Too bad how the front desk person can ruin business for the professional audiologists and the care quality for the patients.
