They are fantastic! My dad needed nicer hearing aids and so we looked this place up. They had free consultations, so he agreed to try it out. Huge step. We ended up seeing both doctors there and both were amazing. So patient, so understanding, we never felt rushed, answered our Qs, we never felt like we were forced to do anything, we felt listened to, I could keep going! The free consultation was thorough, we were then able to get squeezed in for a follow up appointment with a very busy Dr Nakamura so we could have conversations in Japanese with my parents. Every experience just made their comfort levels go up as well as mine. I know he will be in good care good hands. I came to Island Audiology to see if new hearing aids could help with my sever hearing loss in my right ear. I had been told 7 years before that at that time nothing would help, but hearing aids were getting better and I should check with an audiologist from time to time. Dr Wielins did an accurate hearing test, and then cheerfully sold me a pair of hearing aids for more than $7000. She did not tell me that she would not expect them to help me hear in my right ear, the whole point of my consultation. I needed to know that before I could make an informed decision about buying the hearing aids. I have no idea why she didn't tell me. After a year, I told her that no matter what I did, I was not hearing any better in my right ear. It was only then she told me that she would not expect them to help. I am dissatisfied. read more

I am a nurse practitioner from Hawai'i. Island Audiology of Kailua-Kona fraudulently billed me for a deposit of over 500 dollars down payment on a hearing aid even after I contacted them and asked them to hold the deposit pending insurance authorization. My insurance covers the majority of the cost and I am/was happy to pay the balance. Instead of correcting the situation, or showing the slightest degree of professionalism towards a Hawaii medical provider who has served the Big Island for the past 22 years, I received nasty emails and they cashed my check anyway, without ever attempting to correct the issue. They even refused to correct their mistakes when I notified them that I was unable to read their forms due to disabling visual conditions and had informed the staff of such at the visit, while asking them not to deposit my check. This leaves the only recourse of reporting such illegal business practice to the authorities. I am forwarding complaints to Hawai'i DCCA/PVL and the Hawai'i and Oregon Insurance commissioners regarding their shady medical billing practices and their unwillingness to correct bad business practices on their part. I do note this is not the first time a complaint has been filed against them with DCCA. I now must also contact the Blue Cross Blue shield vendors to report their misguided and stubborn mistreatment of patients with sensory impairments. I am sure Bank of Hawaii will also be happy to learn of their bad check cashing behavior with regard to a long-term local customer and owner of the only psychiatric practice on this island that still accepts public insurance and works pro bono when needed. In December 2017 I requested an appointment with the Honolulu VA, and they assigned me to Island Audiology in Honolulu. I made an appointment and showed up, and one of the employees gave me a simple "hearing test" in an exam room. Not in a booth, like in the past. After about 5 minutes, she said she would submit all the papers to the VA and it should take about 2 months. I was a little uneasy, because I expected more intensive tests, as I've had life-long hearing loss issues, and I couldn't believe that was the entire test. The whole experience just seemed a little shady, walking through the office and seeing hearing aid boxes stacked up, seemed a little weird. It was totally an unprofessional office. However, I went home and waited. And waited. After 3 months (Mar 2018) I called them, asking for an update. They replied "Of, we received a fax from the VA a few weeks ago, saying you need to be cleared by an ENT, and then we can resubmit the papers. No one contacted you?" No, no one did, but thanks. So, on MY OWN money, I called a local ENT, waited for the appointment and eventually received a document saying I was cleared for hearing aids. I mailed all the papers to Island Audiology, and waited...and waited. After 2 weeks I called them, and guess what? They say they hadn't received anything. And of course, I sent the originals. Well, I had to go on a business trip for a few weeks, so I didn't have time to deal with it anymore. When I got back, in May 2018, I called them again and they said "Oh, guess what? We just found your documents! We received them and they were laying on a desk somewhere." They said they resubmitted everything, and again, I waited. And waited. Finally, in July 2018, I called the VA and asked what was going on, and they told me they had no record of anything being submitted to the VA, ditto for the audiology department, and the entire VA authorization had already expired anyway. The audiology department could see all my authorizations, all my records, and no where did they see anything sent in my this scam place. I have wasted months being played by these idiots. The woman at the VA told me they had too many complaints about them, that they used students as employees or something, as well! At this point I filed a formal complaint with the VA, and asked to be sent to a different company. However, they recommended I call Island Audiology and ask them to resubmit everything. On 26 July, I called Island Audiology and was going to ask them to resubmit my papers, when lo and behold, I was told that they are no longer authorized to accept Veterans (patients from the VA). Wow, what a shock (sarcasm). I suspect that my own complaints, as well as other Veterans, has caused them to lose their business with the VA, but I can only guess. Now here I am, almost 8 months after I got involved with these incompetent fools, back at square one. Actually, I never got past square one. Island Audiology: first they didn't know enough to know that I would need an exam by an ENT, then they "lost" my papers, then never even submitted my papers to the VA....plus the money I had to pay for an ENT exam. For your own sake, avoid this place, it isn't worth the time and stress. I've never met a bigger group of incompetent, worthless morons in my life. 8 months go by, all for nothing. They lost my papers, they didn't submit them when they found them, they didn't inform me of the VA's requirement...just one thing after another. Thanks, Robin Wielins, for the great care. Today, I received a set of hearing aids after having them calibrated. I can now hear sounds that were previously blocked due to being hearing impaired. Robin Wielins, Au.D was very patient and exceptionally professional with the ability to diagnose and implement the necessary corrections to make a positive impact on my hearing deficit. I highly recommend Island Audiology--I needed to get wax removal from my ears when on vacation and the staff had a calming manner and gentle touch. I found out about this place because both my father and grandfather received expert hearing aid guidance and support and their quality of life greatly improved as a result.
