This is such a unique experience! First time on the vineyard and I got a bunch of recommendations to go here ! It is a quick stop but so worth it ! I was greeted by these beautiful Alpaca. I've never seen one before in person. They let you pet the Alpaca, also be mindful to not aggravate them or get super close or they will spit . There are signs everywhere to give you a warning . lol thankfully no spitting happened when I was present . There where was a baby alpaca , they are so cute almost wanted to take one home . They have a cute gift shop where do you can get a bunch of goodies made out of Alpaca fur . Great tourist location. These are the cutest animals and they have areas with just adults and also an area with moms and babies. No charge and just open to Allie you to wander around and look. They are very docile and you can get up close. They sit just behind the fence. In the gift shop they have everything you could want alpaca. Gloves scarfs hats sweaters socks toys and a bunch of ribbons and banners for the comparative successes. The person being the counter was very helpful and talkative. She made the experience better. This place is a cool. I've never been to an alpaca farm so this was adorable to me. I was worried of being spat on or bitten but I'm happy to report that I came out dry and in one piece. From the parking to the actual farm there's a lot of grass and gravel to walk on so don't wear heels or wedges. The parking was free and the entrance was $8 per person. We had a 2yo in the group and they let him in for free. There's not much to do here but pet the alpaca in their little area and maybe buy some cool/ cute items made with alpaca fur. I don't know who thought of this but there was an out of the box thinker.... They have an area to do Yoga with the Alpacas roaming freely around you!!! I mean, like... that looked awesome. There were at least 20 people doing yoga with one instructor and I don't know how many alpacas. I will say this, it was in the sun so take lots of water. I did see rolled up yoga mats, I don't know if they were for purchase but I imagine so. If you're not going to do yoga I'd say that this place is good for like 15 mins. I enjoyed it though. It was a unique experience. Oh and something I found interesting, the alpacas didn't stink. I pet their cute hairy heads and was surprised to find that my hand didn't reek of dirty farm animal. Even though I have an unusual predilection for all camelid mammals, Island Alpaca is a place I think everyone would enjoy. We stopped by during a visit to MV and managed to squeeze in about an hour before closing time. There are multiple areas to observe them being themselves. They eat hay right next to the fence so there are ample opportunities to get up close and personal and PET them which I highly recommend because they are SO FURRY. They're adorable. The staff is also very nice. They offered us the ability to stand in the barn and watch them run by as they were taken into their "nighttime" section of the farm at closing time. I believe they have special events like alpaca yoga but this was not an option the week of our visit/week of easter. They also sell them. If only my car was big enough to fit a few of them in there I might have taken some home. read more

We had such a fun time at Island Alpaca. It was such a wholesome experience and would recommend it to people of all ages. The alpaca were just so cute and precious. With any animal, it's important to use caution and be observant of their behaviors. These alpaca were just so gentle and soft. They made the cutest little noises. The babies were just so precious as well. The gift shop has lots of items made with the fur. They were beautiful and pricey but you see where the fur comes from. I bought a variety of trinkets including a little alpaca magnet, which I fell in love with. I love experiences like this and had a great time. If you're gonna do it, go full alpaca with a walking tour, a deep dive in how to raise your own alpacas, and of course, a behind-the-fence snuggle sesh with the cutesy-wutesy widdle babies. THEY'RE SO FRIGGIN SOFT. Please don't go in comparing this lovely respite to, say, an OstrichLand in Solvang, CA (what? You've never heard of OstrichLand?! Gohrrrrrl...), as it's largely a spectator attraction with a pricey gift shop attached. The alpacas comfort and safety is paramount, so they will take advantage of the ample space away from the reaching paws of these weird bipedal adolescent mammals calling to them and snapping their digits. But then there are always a few who love fuzzy butt scatches, so yes ye of the tactilely persuaded ilk, you will get to pet an alpaca. Otherwise, you can learn a lot, put in your suggestion for the newborns' names, and know you're donating your admission fee to a really sweet space. But seriously, be a full-on Wool Don and reserve the behind-the-scenes tour. You'll never feel more squeeeee. read more

If you are on Martha's Vineyard this is a must place to visit! It's sure to bring the kid out in you! We arrived as soon as they opened and did the self guided tour, which is really two pens of alpaca's one for the males and the other for the females and babies. Depending how long you want to watch them this really only takes about 30 minutes, One of the workers was in the female pen she was so friendly and very informative of the animals so we were there a little longer talking with her. We happen to catch a couple alpacas out of their pens and were able to get a picture with them! That definitely made my day. They are very calm animals, and so many different colors. The gift shop has so many beautiful things to choose from a lot from which local islanders make. All the staff here was extremely nice and very informative. read more

If you run out of things to do on the Vineyard, this is a cute little place. You do a self guided tour and there are 2 areas of alpacas. The males and the females with the baby alpaca. OMG, I felt like a very happy child visiting "Island Alpaca"!!! The alpacas are so sweet and docile. I know I sound silly, but they are like live stuffed animals. Their faces look almost cartoon like. They have large soulful eyes, big eyelashes and a smile that will melt your heart. The alpacas range in shades from Light Blonde to Dark Brown. The alpacas look like they're very well cared for. They are very well groomed and always have plenty to eat. Sounds like a great life! During our recent visit, we saw a very young alpaca healing from a femur replacement. You could see where the fur was shaved. This little guy was really getting around very well. Please check out his pic! There is an adorable gift shop with many stuffed alpacas, alpaca yarn, alpaca wearable goods and other items. Oh my goodness, there was a one month old baby alpaca there and we got to pet it and it was SO SOFT!!! These alpacas are super calm though they don't always like being touched. That's fine! I'd be the same. Now, they aren't doing very much in the hot summer sun except lying down and drinking water; maybe eating some hay. It is so worth the 8 bucks to come in here but there isn't THAT much to see. There is a gift shop and then the Alpacas (and a few Llamas). The gifts are so expensive but I guess that is what nice Alpaca wool goes for? The people working there were super friendly and were happy to answer questions. I first found out about Island Alpaca via Tripadvisor when I was looking for things to do in Martha's Vineyard. I immediately contacted them via phone and they told me to submit an form with my preferred dates. Thankfully, they were able to accommodate my first preferred date. We arrived a little bit late, but they were able to put us right into the tour. We had an 11am Alpaca Walk with 2 alpacas ($30 per alpaca, $20 per person sharing an alpaca). Our guide, Tayla, was absolutely amazing. She gave us a run-down of the tour, taught us how to handle the alpacas, and walked around during the tour to help us take photos and wrangle the alpacas. I had Khan Dor and the in-laws had Atticus. You get roughly 20-25 minutes walking the alpacas, with tons of opportunities for pets, nuzzles, and photo ops! Our alpaca, Khan Dor was more interested in an afternoon snack than us sometimes, but our guide taught us a super neat trick to get them to pose for photos. This was an absolutely amazing experience and I highly recommend it if you're on MV. Make sure you book early though, because they only do two walks a day! If you're not able to get on an Alpaca Walk, they have a giant pen of alpacas that you can see and pet. There are plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal and everyone was super friendly and willing to answer questions about the alpacas. read more

From getting more information with Izzy via Instagram (i.e. how to reserve a spot online for walking alpaca to where to park when I arrive) to walking the alpacas with Taylor (we learned so much about alpacas; she's very knowledgeable!). I had never been to Island Alpaca, several of my friends wanted to go and I thought that was a great idea. I really had not had any close interaction with alpacas. I got to get really close! I found them to be amazingly sweet. I could not get over their cute faces. I can't wait to go back again. It's a beautiful spot. The store is amazing. Everyone working there is kind, knowledgable and want you to really know what they do there. I petted the older ones and their fur was really soft, especially on their heads. I didn't get spit on but watch out. The store is cute but prices are INSANE. Also, it's 5 bucks to get in per person. Visiting Island Alpaca was on my Martha's Vineyard bucket list for the longest time so on my first visit I knew I couldn't miss it. We arrived during their last hour and were welcomed to walk around and pet the boys which come up first. The young lady at the front also shared that the females were in the back and I was in for a treat. They had a baby alpaca that was just two weeks old...I practically skipped down the road. I said hi to the boys first; each one with their own name tag. Some were friendly and curious while others watched from a distance. I never realized alpacas made so many little sounds - all of which were adorable. I made my way around the back and came upon another group of alpacas. I saw some people huddled around one area and realized I was coming upon the baby of the pack (is this what you call an alpaca group - someone enlighten me). A little mini aplaca (the baby) stood no more than a few feet tall and I joyously watched her chew on her moms ear and hair. I hope everyone gets a chance to see a baby alpaca on their visit here but lucky for us they are all adorable baby or not! read more

Totally worth the $5 visit. During the summer the 2 pm walk is actually at 9:30 am. Call in advance to reserve your walk. We drove down to look at the planes at Katama then came back at 10 am when the farm opened for regular visitors if you didn't book the early 9:30 am walk. Everyone is so nice & helpful. Read all the signs along the fence. Great for kids & you could be in and out in 30 min to an hour. After that, go check out the 2 seater planes. There is bike & car parking. read more

I had high hopes for the visit after reading all the reviews. However, I'm a little disappointed as there is no one giving us a tour or introducing us to the farm. I've been to other alpaca farms near Boston, and they give a tour to the visitors for free. With $5 admission fee per person, I'd expect some customer service or tour, but there is none. My kids saw this on a map while on the ferry and HAD to go. I was worried it would be a 5 minute trip with not much to do but I couldn't have been more wrong. This was the highlight to our day trip to Martha's Vineyard. We had to take a taxi from the port we got there and immediately you see a the alpacas out wandering. When we walk up to visit them a lovely lady came out to feed them and she told us ALL about them. Not only did my 19 yr old, 16 yr old and her boyfriend have a great time listening but my husband was in love with the Alpacas. They have a lovely shop that is more than reasonably priced. Not only do they sell the normal items you would expect but there are some great knitted items made right on the island by their own alpaca yarn. We were there in time to take the animals out for a walk but we declined thinking it would be a great thing to do next time we are there. Overall we were there for about 1.5 hours and thought it was the best $5 a person we spent that day. A great brake from shopping and eating. read more

The staff are very accommodating and knowledgeable about the 80 Alpacas. I was blown away at the staff member's memory and knowledge about all of the animals (there's one rescue Llama amongst the group). She was very thorough, enthusiastic and patient with answering any and everyone's questions. This was just her second summer working with the Alpacas. The Alpacas are very well maintained and one of them is an 8 time award winning Alpaca. All of her ribbons are displayed just before reaching the gift shop. Island Alpaca is a MUST SEE experience on the island. Yes, we love the beaches and lighthouses, but this is an experience not to be missed! Take time to get away and head out to the country, it's WELL worth the trip. The owner was so friendly, Pam who was feeding them when we arrived was so knowledgeable and friendly as she had her own herd at one time and Daisy in the gift shop is passionate about all things Alpaca & was very helpful as we picked out items, I know the value of Alpaca fleece and the prices were on point. We easily spent about 90 minutes here and the males were fun to pet and we watched many mama's and babies walk around the farm.
