SOUTHERNMOST POINT IN MAINLAND EUROPE!!!!!
The very tippy-tip of the Iberian Peninsula is Isla de Tarifa (Isla de las Palomas)! So cool!
Across the straight of Gibraltar you can catch a big eyeful of Tangiers, which is Morocco, which is AFRICA!!!!!!! I LOVE this kind of stuff!
Amazing views, and beautiful photo opps. Windy, great sea breeze, just such a pretty and amazing place on earth!
As you walk toward the island, the Atlantic Ocean is on your right, and the Mediterranean Sea is on your left.
The very nearby ferries travel back and forth, daily, should you want to go explore (about 150€ pp, roundtrip). For us, we were pressed for time, and as much as just setting foot on another continent, only to turn around and head back, would be a blast for me, I wanted to save it for a time when we could do Tangeirs justice. So Isla de Tarifa is as close as we got to Africa, for now!
Though there are access roads to the island, and throughout the island, the public cannot drive them. There is metered street parking on the mainland, with max time of 120mins for 2€; lesser times, are of course, less costly.
The paseo to the island is meant to be a scenic and easy walk up to the island gates. HOWEVER, you ain't gettin' on the island itself.
The gates are shut, locked, and remain that way. You walk up the access road, as close as you can get, touch the gates, and head back. Frustrating, especially because there were some gorgeous old buildings on the island, but that's the deal.
All in all, it's totally worth the visit, 5 stars, to get as close as possible to the very tip of Iberia. One of my favorite stops on our trip! read more
