They had just started serving dinner to the tables and our waitress Ruby was very attentive and helpful. You no longer have to go up to bar and place your order & then wait & pick it up. The cheese curds were some of the best we have had. Fish & chips was good/ one order was enough for 2. They had a good selection of beers & drinks. After a 3 hour boat ride it was just what we needed.

The rooftop seating was the highlight -- beautiful views and a really nice atmosphere sitting outside overlooking the water. We ordered the steak frites to share. The steak itself was very good -- cooked perfectly and full of flavor. However, the presentation was very underwhelming. It was served as just a piece of steak on a plastic plate with no real plating or sides. Our fries were also removed as a side from our meal, thinking there was a miscommunication there with the kitchen. We also asked for an extra plate and silverware to share, and were given a paper plate and plastic utensils, which made it difficult to eat a steak comfortably and felt inconsistent with the expected level of dining. Just odd! Our server mentioned he was new, which we appreciated, and he did refill drinks and check in a few times. Overall, though, the service felt a bit flat and not especially engaging. At the end, the bill was around $75 for the steak frites plus a service charge, which we hadn't seen elsewhere in town. Between the pricing, service, and presentation, the experience didn't quite match expectations. Overall, the rooftop and steak were enjoyable, but the experience felt inconsistent.

Less than a block from the "Main Street", and 2 blocks to the Madeline Island ferry line. We awoke to beautiful sunrises in our backyard of Lake Superior. Maybe 20 feet from the water, with nothing in our way but the lovely patio table provided by the condo. We were traveling with my parents, so we opted for the 2 bedroom, 2 bath. The condo was spacious enough where we weren't crowded on top of each other, and had plenty of space. Toiletries are provided, even though the pamphlet said they were not, as was a hairdryer. Kitchen was huge, living room nice, although the tv was on the one and only switched outlet for the living room (issue for parents, not us - we weren't watching it). We thought the beds were hard. We compared it to sleeping on a box spring. Not great, but doable. And the microwave was from 1983, older than the cousin we came to see get married. But it worked! We checked in on Friday early afternoon, and their wireless worked. An hour later it stopped working, and we had a really hard time with the AT&T E network (sloooooooooooooow). Every time I called to the office, all we got was their answering machine. Sure, I could have left a message, but I didn't. My fault I guess, as I figured I'd eventually reach someone. I was wrong, so we never had wifi. Note: This property is managed by The Winfield Inn. All the other relatives who were staying in hotels were jealous of our place. Yeah, it's really nice. I'd stay here again without hesitation.

On the positive side, -- our room (which was on the lower side of the property) had incredible water views, -- there's a shared outdoor porch with chairs overlooking the water and an inviting backyard with picnic tables and chairs, -- a flat path along the water connects the motel to downtown Bayfield. (You can walk to town in about 15 leisurely minutes without worrying about parking there). -- the room was clean, and had some conveniences (small microwave, tv, coffee maker (but no tea!), toiletries), -- the very small bathroom has a tub/shower combo, -- we didn't hear traffic noise in spite of being on main route into town, -- there was free parking. However, -- the price point was high given the overall quality of the motel and the fact that it was still pre-season. This is effectively a small and rather dated budget motel. -- Breakfast is NOT included in the price of the room. -- Our bed creaked whenever either my husband or I moved. -- Rooms are close together, and there is no privacy if you want to sit on the shared back porch. -- The motel has a unique check-in procedure. When we entered the lobby, there was no one there. We needed to call or text to announce our arrival, and were then provided instructions on how to access our room. We didn't interact with any staff in person until checkout. We would stay here again if we were to return to Bayfield, but would compare options to see the best quality to cost ratio.

I especially loved the large two person jacuzzi tub that filled so quickly! Plenty of clean towls replenished every day and our room was quiet and cool at night with the windows open. The breakfasts were phenominal! On our first morning, we had an egg bake, fresh fruit and blueberry muffins with plenty of juice and coffee. The 2nd day we had breakfast enchiladas, homemade bread with fruit preserves and fruit. So much great food to get us ready for a day of hiking the island. Barb even gave us her favorite recipes in a book. I made the egg bake this past weekend! The grounds are beautiful with a firering seating area in the evening, a beautiful sun porch for sitting outside and lots of flowers and fresh veggies growing in the garden. There is a resident pooch at the house that loves geeting attention. The common areas are clean and comfortable and they are within walking distance of downtown Bayfield with lots of dining and shopping as well as the ferry to madeline island. I will definitely stay in the future. We were in the largest room, The Solarium at the top of the stairs. It had a great view of the gardens and Lake Superior.
