Hotel is the third floor of the building. The first two floors is an outdoors shop where you can rent bikes, kayaks, etc and buy workout gear as well as a café which serves sandwiches, coffee, and alcoholic drinks. Regular check in was at the outdoors shop, but as we were late check ins, they just provided us with the code to the elevator and the key was in the door of our room. Hotel only consists of 5 rooms and on the night we stayed, was completely sold out. While hotel is small, it would benefit from signage on which direction hotel rooms are. Additionally, avoid the elevator if you don't have a lot of luggage as it is super slow. The ice machine was broken; however, there was a note that we could grab some in the café downstairs which was nice. We stayed in the Sailor's Retreat room and it was huge with a king sized bed and lots of space to move and with a balcony facing the bay. Something they cannot control though, is that there are a lot of flying bugs like gnats if you were to sit on the balcony. However, for $300 a night, while it was a big space and is a great view, I would come back for the view at the café instead of staying here. I am a minimalistic traveler and only treat hotels as places to sleep; however, since my partner was working the next day we decided to book this room so it was easier to just go down to the café after checkout.

Solo fire pit on Lake Superior. Blue Wave Inn

Loved our 2 day stay. The room was roomy and the rain shower was fantastic! Outstanding Bloody Mary's in the dining area. The beach area was so relaxing. We really enjoyed the solo fire pit. We have one at home, it was so nice to just throw in some logs and fire it up. Friendly owners and staff.

AMAZING place to stay with friendly staff! Gorgeous building with 5 themed rooms, fully stocked bar, and food menu filled with yummy sandwiches and light bites. My bf and I found this location on hotels.com ahead of visiting the Apostle Islands and didn't quite know what to expect. We were BLOWN AWAY by the gorgeous views of Lake Superior, how friendly and accommodating the staff was, and how cutely themed the nice sized rooms were.

Context: MEA Family Get Away - October 2024. Our plan was to stay in Duluth, MN but prices were…read moreexorbitant. So we drove a little bit down the lake to stay in Ashland instead. Location - The hotel is right in downtown which puts it close to various restaurants, fast food, gas stations, and shops. You can walk right to main street where a lot of fun shops are located. You are also right on Lake Superior and can walk to the shore and marina from the hotel. The hotel looks out over the lake and marina, great beautiful views. Building & Rooms - The hotel is designed to look like an older hotel that was found in Ashland and they made sure to mimic many of the original hotel's features. It was a very beautiful hotel building and the fact that it sits right on the lake is a huge bonus. Rooms are pretty roomy. Ours was a suite that included a small kitchenette, separate bedroom, and nice size living room. Amenities - The hotel has a pool but NO hot tub. Bummer. The pictures online showed that at one point there was a hot tub as well but it looks like that has been filled in with concrete and turned into seating area. The pool was heated so it wasn't a total loss. We still had fun. There is a beautiful sitting room off the hotel lobby that is styled to look like something you would see in the late 1800's. Great place for family pictures for a holiday card or just to crack open a good book. Food - Rate includes free continental breakfast. The choices are typical to what you will find at a middle of the line hotel - various cold continental choices with a hot buffet including eggs, breakfast meat, and a waffle bar. They upped their choices by offering Monin syrups and drink toppings for their coffee bar. There is also a nice restaurant that overlooks the lake in the basement of the hotel. We did not eat there but it looked like a nice place. Vibe - Very chill, higher rate middle-class hotel. Many people staying were going out and seemed to be on holiday. Reality vs. Online - Online pictures that I saw on their website matched the quality and condition of the hotel and rooms. It met my expectations. The only downside was the missing hot tub. Boo! Price & Final Verdict - Price was right and the location was solid. This would be a five star review but I'm docking one star off because of no hot tub. That is a deal breaker for our family and it sucks to come off the road after a long day expecting to enjoy a nice hot soak and then not have it. We would probably stay again (just with managed expectations) though if we find ourselves back in Ashland.

Rich history and they did a great job with decorating the space and creating a nice atmosphere. However, the rooms are typical Best Western (maybe worse) at a very high rate. My biggest complaint is that the Internet did not work at all. When you go to click on the Wi-Fi, it takes you to a login webpage as normally most hotels do, but the page never loads. They were not very clean upon checking in and overall very outdated. For example, the TVs seem to be from 2010. Something else about the room that really bothered me was how close the sink spout was to the actual sink. Which is a weird thing to think about, but it was almost impossible to wash our hands because there was no space under the water. Also, upon booking, we selected a "Lakeview" room and did not have a Lakeview at all. We were facing the Walgreens, which was a little upsetting because I believe that room was $20 more. The complementary breakfast was pretty nice for a Best Western. The pool was very small and it seems like they closed the hot tub, which is out of date from what the website claims. The bar/restaurant in the lower level was nice to visit Staff were very nice and helpful. But overall, I think they get away with charging such a high price because they are one of the only hotels in Ashland. If I had more time I would've booked an Airbnb.

We stayed in the Guest House. It was exactly what we were looking for -- comfort, peace and quiet, but working internet. Felt very welcomed by Eva and Colten. Yummy welcome treats were an added bonus. If you are in the Guest House, plan on taking a bath instead of a shower. First-class bathtub, but the shower curtain will invade your personal space otherwise. Would absolutely stay there again if "in the neighborhood." It's worth a few extra dollars compared to just an average motel.

It's delightful, comfortable and quiet, and it's just a few minute drive to the south shore of Lake Superior (and the awesome artesian well water available 'on tap') and a 25 minute drive to Bayfield, WI. The town of Ashland itself is sleepy and quaint, and sports a great co-op, a tasty bakery, and a wonderful coffee shop, not to mention the variety of shops along the town's main street (not the busy street running along the lake shore, but one block further in). Note: the owners informed us that they're going to stop serving morning breakfasts (next year, I think) because it's simply too much work for them (Tina, mainly) when Brian is away all week working his full-time job at a school three hours' drive away.

That is what Second Wind offers 100 times over. My family, which consists of 2 adults & 2 teenagers: 15 & 17. There is NO TV! It was the greatest thing EVER. We actually spoke to each other, watched the night skies, & played with Mr. Ollie (Oliver) & kitties: Sassy & Sweet Pea. Not to mention the sweet donkey's. We stayed in the Northern Lights loft. It was tastefully decorated with country chic/wilderness ascents. The beds were comfy. Most importantly, the room was clean & no speck of dust/dirt could be found. The bath tub was absolute heaven! It felt like home. We built a campfire outdoors 2 nights. We roasted marshmallows & made brats with the roasting sticks that were provided by Kelly. The fire ring had seating surrounding it for every one & more. Mark hung out with us the first time. The second night, all of the guests, Kelly, & Mark too, were at the fire. We all hung out around the fire & had s'mores. Pretty cool to sit & talk to others in a welcoming, not pretentious environment; no stress. Kelly puts the H in hostess. She would make maps for us with how long it takes to get there, helped us select things to do, & took us on a river walk with waterfalls. My kids & I slid down one on our butts like a slip & slide; EPIC. In closing, Second Wind was exactly what my family needed. If you haven't had your breath taken away by the beauty of the night sky, been greeted by the sweetest Airedale pup, tried to gain the affections of a sassy cat, or had the opportunity to meet some sweet animals, I highly recommend it. My family will return some time sooner than later. We made memories there that will last a lifetime!

Quiet, peaceful, rejuvenating place to stay.
