Has all the qualities of a truly outstanding family doctor. I am dreading the day when she decides to retire; hope it's years fromnow.

I have recommended him to a few other elderly people and they have all been very please and feel they are being taken care of with intelligence and kindness. He does not rush you and listens in detail to what is bothering you. He has diagnosed some of my friends when other doctors did not. He does not rush with you. Although sometimes I have had to wait I very glad to do that to have the privilege of his service.

I am not much for going to see a doctor as often…read moreas I should and since I've moved to Vancouver I've had about 4 different doctors but as soon as my friend referred me to Dr. Ketene I was hooked. He is the best doctor I've ever had. I have found that 99% of doctors want you to get in and get out as fast as possible. They aren't interested in you as a person and see you more as a number than a person. Many offices only allow you to talk about one issue per session. If you came in for a cold but also had a weird rash you could only talk about one or you'd have to set up a second appointment. Dr. Ketene, on the other hand, will check on what you came in for and then ask you simply how you are doing otherwise. About a year ago I went in for a rough cold and then after he checked me out he asked how I was feeling in general, I mentioned I've been sleepy a lot and have had a sore throat for about a week or two before my cold came on and he decided to send me for some assorted blood tests just to see if I was okay. Turned out I had mono!! I never would have known if he had not asked how I was doing. Amazing. He is never in a rush and yet I am rarely waiting more than 10mins past my appt time. He is incredibly thorough, relaxed, professional and kind. I would recommend him to anyone who wants someone they can relax around. Also, he has the best sense of humour I've ever seen in a doctor. The way my friend originally referred me to him is by saying "Yea, he's a cool doctor. Kind of reminds me of Seinfeld..." That sounds about right. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Doctors are NOT professional, they will come over to the desk and stand there chatting and laughing while students who need medical care wait around for HOURS just to see a doctor for a referral. They are also incredibly judgmental and can be very rude once you're actually in the room. I waited almost two hours to see a doctor for FIVE MINUTES for a referral. Avoid this clinic at all costs, they are grossly incompetent, unprofessional and will waste your time. If there are tens of thousands of UBC students, and this clinic also supposedly serves the local community, how is it STILL so bad?! There are so many 1 star reviews for this clinic, we must demand better health care. This place is sad and pathetic.

I took my parents to see the doctor a few weeks ago, and she was so racist towards them just because they couldn't speak English very well. She literally told my parents to go "learn English" before coming back. If a clinic is willing to hire someone like this to front their business, I think that speaks volume to their standards. Doctors themselves are extremely hit and miss. I've had some of my worse experiences ever here. Was once told I can only get diagnosed for 1 symptom. 1 Symptom. Like what. Last year I had a cold (don't worry, it was pre-Covid), so I had a really bad cough. Was trying to get prescription cough medication and an inhaler for my asthma. This old lady literally told me I had to come back another for my "asthma problem" because it's a separate issue. Seriously, what the heck. Well, I'm never coming back.

My family have been coming to Dr. Coburn since the early 80's, so West Tenth Medical Clinic *is*…read more"the doctor" for us. Dr. Coburn is a fantastic physician, with a wide range of knowledge as befits a family care practitioner, and a warm and engaging manner with her patients. Some of us she has known since birth (my little brother!), and she really feels like a "family doctor." In my experience, she is aware of the options and alternative treatments available, and she keeps up with current research relevant to family health. She has referred me for specialist care whenever warranted, and when I have come up with a particular surgeon or specialist I want to see for my particular reasons, she is completely willing to refer me as I request. Her choices for specialist referrals on other occasions have been outstanding, without exception. I was also impressed today when Dr. Coburn found me some Clavulin (an antibiotic that is particularly good for sinus infections). It was first choice of my ENT specialist, but the Safeway pharmacy said it was back-ordered for three months from the wholesalers - and Dr. Coburn found me some at the small, independent pharmacy next door to her clinic and I picked it up right away. Talk about great medical care service :) The staff at the clinic are likewise great, though you have to be prepared to be put on hold. Every time you phone them. For several minutes, at least. But once you get accustomed to that, it's not that annoying any more. I have dealt with the staff on many occasions (duh) and they are very helpful, and understand well the difference between scheduling a routine followup and "the doctor wants to see me by the end of the week," so I know that they are gifted with significant magical powers, even with a packed-out appointment calendar. Most importantly of all, Dr. Coburn listens carefully, which is important to me since I have medical training and am able to explain my symptoms more carefully and accurately than the so-called "average" patient; other doctors in other cities where I've lived have sometimes just assumed I don't know what I am talking about and written-off things that ended up being just as important as I had thought they were to begin with - and that wastes my time and annoys me immensely, so I appreciate doctors who start by listening carefully to the reported symptoms. As an aside on doctors in general: when I used to be a paramedic, can you imagine if I made similar judgment calls on my patients? "Well, he's complaining of chest pain and says his dad died of a heart attack - but I don't think he knows what he's talking about and I don't have a death certificate here, so let's take the slow route to the hospital." Yeah right! So Dr. Coburn definitely comes through with flying colours on that count. Unfortunately, as with so many things in life, there is a fly in the ointment, the reason this review doesn't get the 5 stars it might sound like it deserves ... Dr. Coburn shares her practice with Dr. Blaxland, whom I refuse to see any more, after she repeatedly refused to prescribe antibiotics for my sinus infections (despite the fact that I was under the care of an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist for recurrent sinus problems which had been confirmed by CT scan). When I insisted on receiving medical care and not being ignored, Dr. Blaxland ran bogus tests on my throat to "prove" it wasn't a sinus infection; those tests were not medically diagnostic, according to the doctor in charge of the labs, when Dr. Coburn called to investigate the whole fiasco after successful antibiotic therapy confirmed that it was, of course, the sinus infection I knew it to be. Like most "sinus patients," I am well aware of what a sinus infection feels and looks like... which kinda sucks for me. Ironically, when I went to Dr. Blaxland for another type of infection, she wrote me a scrip for antibiotics without blinking an eye or performing a single test, so it's not just a healthy hesitation to prescribe antibiotics, but a determined refusal to treat my documented symptoms in a medically-appropriate manner. She has a bee in her bonnet about it, and nothing - not even pictures of the inside of my head! - will dislodge it. I explained the incident to the ENT specialist, and he and his team expressed anger and outrage that I was left to suffer for several months without treatment (no joke), and then the specialist gave me his personal email address so I could contact him directly and "never go back to her" when I have a sinus infection. I know of another patient who refused to be seen by Dr, Blaxland for similarly inexplicable "bee in her bonnet" medical care decisions, so definitely give her a miss and ask for a different doctor. The staff are willing to accommodate the request to not be seen by Dr. Blaxland; trust me on that one.

He obviously hates his job. I don't care that this is a busy practise, don't talk to me as if I am an inconvenience. He actually raised his voice and sounded impatient when I asked a simple question in relation to what he had just told, and was fully understood by me. He went out of his way to not answer it; simply repeating what he had already said as if I were an annoying infant and did not address my question whatsoever. I've had more courtesy from a spitting camel. By contrast there is one lady there that seems to run around keeping everything running smoothly. Insofar as my actual doctor is concerned - Doctor Turban - I find her thorough, and efficient, and while I do quite like her, I always feel incredibly rushed when I'm there - more so than any other GP I ever had.
