What's fun is that this restaurant is also a micro-brewery (hence the "brauerei" in the name) and makes a 19% bier called "Alligator". It's a dangerous animal, smooth and creamy and betraying none of the violence that will emerge after a couple of them. Because I was driving, I only got a sip or two and tried the dark ale and the Weiss instead. I prefer stronger tasting Weiss than what was available. The dark ale is nice, but I wouldn't go out of my to seek this bier out, honestly. So, on to what really impressed me! So, because I was in Germany, I wanted true German cuisine and König von Flandern didn't let me down. I ordered the Schwabenteller platter, which was composed of roasted shoulder of pork, livercheese, and crusty roast along with Swabian potato noodles and sauerkraut. My local contact opted for the Wiener schnitzel and my other companion opted for the famous pork knuckle, known as schweinshaxe. I have to say that everything was outstanding. My roasted shoulder of pork was about as good as I've ever had. I'm not a pork guy, but I'm in southern Germany, so I had either learn to like pork or walk away from the cuisine. The shoulder was SO very good that I cannot begin to describe it other than to say it was savory and soul-satisfying in a way that nothing other bacon can bring! The crusty roast was a delight as well, but I could eat the shoulder all day, every day. I'm not a huge fan of liverwurst, but I even enjoyed the livercheese! How can you go wrong with real sauerkraut from a real German restaurant, warm and acidic, but neither overwhelming or sharp like "American" kraut is. Both of my companions enjoyed their meals as well, but they didn't give me much to quote or share, but clearly they were both satisfied. Now, keep in mind that this may be one of the very first English reviews for the Augsburg area, but I have to say, I was VERY satisfied with this visit and I highly recommend König von Flandern!

Our personal favorite is the Dunkel, a darker full bodied truly Bavarian brew. You'll really want to drink them both, so plan to stay awhile in their charming Biergarten. All of their brews are organic, small batch beers, brewed onsite at this friendly, truly Bavarian establishment. The authentic food is some of the most delicious you'll find in all of Bavaria. He had a great personality, infused a lot of humor with all of the information, and was good with people. The beer was very good. There was soooo much beer on the tour and people kept handing me theirs (I don't know why). Needless to say, I was feeling it by the end of the tour. There was an interesting beer-based shot drink at the end that was good. Again, people kept giving me theirs and the tour guide poured me a second one. Geez! At the end of the tour we got to eat dinner. Yum! It was some of the best food I had while in Germany. There was also a quiz to see if you got some kind of certificate. We all cheated. When I was on vacation in Germany I really enjoyed visiting Kloster Breweries. You feel like you are having a religious experience with a beer buzz. Since I was collecting Beer Steins at the time I purchased two at one Kloster Brewery I visited. I like the feel of the stein and the taste of beer when you drink it out of this stein. I've kept my steins for years and years. I'm recommending when you visit Germany that you tour one (or more) of the monastery or castle breweries. It's an unforgettable experience! Klaus, if I get anything wrong please tell me. I don't want to look too stupid. All I have are my happy memories. Plus I have my souvenirs placed where I can see them all the time!!!

The pews look original and you can find carvings people left in the wood. Many Of the carvings are initials with dates. We found some from 1770. The monastery was build in 1330. We stopped by the gift shop afterwards. They have a great selection of home brewed beers, liquors and other little trinkets. I would highly recommend to visit Kloster Ettal when in the area.
