Mosque of the Jerrahi Order

Mosque of the Jerrahi Order

If you're a cisgender, heterosexual male, you will (probably) have a great time. All others,…read morebeware. It only takes 1-2 toxic people in senior leadership to poison an entire organization. I was expecting an egalitarian Sufi community. Sufism is the esoteric, philosophically-oriented branch of Islam. What I encountered instead was a toxic, mainstream Sunni space -- where a particular version of Islam is practically shoved down people's throats -- at least by several members of the leadership. This is the very "variant" of "Islam" that I was seeking to escape. To my best knowledge and belief, there is virtually no Shiites or non-Sunni representation. Oh, and you're literally forced to wear hijab. It's not a choice. I'm not even talking about casually covering your head with a hoodie or beanie. It's hijab -- in the Sunnist Islamist fashion. At least one woman is absolutely obsessed with imposing "traditional gender norms" -- and believes that queer people are an abomination. If you present as queer or gender non-conforming, she'll do everything to make you feel bullied -- and uncomfortable as possible. Similarly, her husband is a crusty "incel type" -- who tells women to "relax" -- and to "be silent". You would think that some mad scientist brought this woman straight out of 1953 -- where she's wearing "poodle skirts" and muching on Thorazine and Quaaludes. The "cherry on top"? Bringing up concerns about a male visitor's history of inappropriate behavior is construed as "gossip" and "conduct unbecoming" -- and grounds to be (literally) "shown the door". And that aforementioned couple? That pair will "gang up" on people in a very literal sense -- and "push them out". My personal experience involved being harassed and accosted by this pair -- (literally) two minutes before fast-break -- during one of the most sacred nights of Ramadan -- and being told to leave immediately -- as "punishment" for engaging in the unforgivable sin of "gossiping" and "backbiting" -- because I previously expressed my concerns about a male visitor, trying to hold that male accountable for his behavior. These two individuals deliberately proceeded to "make a scene" -- and humiliated and verbally abused me in front of everyone present. This is "Islamic behavior". Being treated with basic dignity is strictly a privilege reserved for males. BTW, you can make an educated guess about that problematic male's background. His country of origin is world-famous for its culture of misogyny, domestic violence -- and its freely roaming "sacred cows". People in this "Sufi community" are more obsessed with "hijab" -- and policing and erasing LGBTQ persons -- than they are with actually ensuring women's safety. If my experiences indicate anything, it's how this organization handles matter related to misconduct by males -- should such repugnant matters be brought to leadership's attention. Victims are isolated, bullied, and ostracized. Abusers are given a "free pass". You can also expect to hear transphobic and homophobic sentiments being casually expressed. As far as the "hijab" and the gender segregation? Well, that's just a way of showing the "sisters" their "places" -- particularly, as "household appliances" and "tilth". The entire "hijab as women's safety" argument is nothing other than theatrics.

Islamic Cultural Center of New York

East Harlem

An Absolutely Beautiful and Welcoming Experience!…read more The second part of the funeral was prayers at The Islamic Cultural Center of New York. The Islamic cultural center is a magnificent landmark and a truly special place. From the moment I entered the grounds there was nothing but peace. The beautiful Mosque is grand, modernist architecture on Third Avenue, you know you are visiting a landmark of spiritual and cultural significance. It is one of the city's largest mosques and serves not only as a place of worship for the Muslim community. Stepping inside, the vast, light-filled prayer hall with its soaring dome is breathtakingly peaceful. Upon entering the prayer room, shoes are not permitted. The ladies are on one side, and the men are on the other. Which I actually like because it was nice to have a place wherein ladies can speak and pray amongst themselves. Even though we were there for final prayers for the family matriarch. We were all at peace. The space is immaculately clean and well-organized, with a palpable sense of calm that is perfect for prayer and reflection. The staff and regular attendees are exceptionally friendly and welcoming to newcomers, including non-Muslim visitors like myself. The center also offers a wide range of educational programs and events, including weekly classes and forums, demonstrating its commitment to being a true cultural center, not just a mosque. Whether you are seeking a place to pray, to learn more about Islam, or simply to admire the unique and beautiful architecture, the ICCNY is a phenomenal place. This center is a credit to the city and a shining example of how a place of worship can also be a vital, welcoming community resource. It's a must-visit.
