Real bargain, got great seats walking up to the ticket window, the usual ballpark fare -- hot dog and beer, peanuts, souvenir Iowa Cubs hat, coming in at less than 10% what I spent last time I saw a home game at Wrigley. And the seats were more comfortable. It was a good game, not quite major league quality, but definitely will see some of these young men playing in Chicago (actually a couple had already had their cup of coffee already). I think this was the high point of my trip to Des Moines. Take me out to the ballgame and buy me some...they don't have Cracker Jacks! They do have peanuts though. read more

Today we tried to bring in a small unopened bottle of water, since it's 80+ degree weather, the made us dump them at the gate. Some MLB stadiums let you bring water and even food. I really enjoyed Principal Park..especially being that I am a Cubs fan. It's large enough to hold a big crowd, yet small enough to let it live as a minor league stadium. They've done quite a bit to lend to the Wrigley Field spirit here, down to the green plastic box seats, foul pole flags and dimensional similarities. As for the sights, a nice view of downtown Des Moines is off to the left of the stadium. They've also got a pseudo water fountain near the right field apex. The stadium also sits on the confluence of two rivers, with a good look at the Des Moines river past center field. It might have just been me, but I swear I've never seen a field manicured with such care. The grass and field were both in impeccable shape. As for food here, I can't say I tried it. Des Moines has a lot to offer within a few blocks of the park and I chose to settle into Court Avenue Brewing prior to the game. It was a good decision! Very disappointed! Terrible communication about new "handbag rule". Iowa Cubs have ZERO solution for everyone that arrives with a small handbag that is not clear. Turning people away left and right. They sell tickets with zero communication. I go to Wrigley Field to watch the real Cubs. They have no problem with small handbags. I highly recommend bringing ziploc baggies. I really like minor league baseball. It has a certain family comfort level that you don't find at many MLB facilities. Sec Taylor Stadium (aka Principal Park) is no Wrigley Field or Fenway Park, but it is a great way to spend 9 innings. The tickets are are cheap, the beer is cold, the stadium is clean, the sightlines are excellent, and the Iowa Cubs are in the playoffs this year (2008)! And of course, if you are really into the Chicago Cubs (who look playoff bound too), this is where some of it begins for the folks lucky enough to make the Big League. read more

Food- Fair amount of choices, a few things that are unique to the the stadium. Has a restaurant in left field. Seats are comfortable as well. Extras- Decent atmosphere, great size scoreboard, concessions stand are behind seats so you cannot see game while in line, has a fountain which kids play. I'm not a big baseball fan, but love to go and hang out. My husband's work had an outing. We park a few blocks away got there and was stopped because I had a 7" x 8" crossbody purse. My husband had to run back to the car and put my purse there. The clear bags are bigger and hold more, and as I watched from the security location, most had contents covered by jackets and bulky items inside. None were looked into. Here comes a couple with a 'child' - I never saw... with a back pack, but they had 'diapers' in it. I mentioned that the woman's bag was much bigger than the requirements. Security said she couldn't bring it in... even though he was going to let her pass. She said she had 'binkies' in it!!!! OMG. As I waited, I saw several folks go through with cross body bags that surpassed mine!. One gal I knew, said 'I just tucked it under my jacket'. They could have shook out the contents of mine and found a wallet and a cell phone, BUT, NO. Had to run it back to the car. I'll admit. The Iowa Cubs. A great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Tickets are cheap, the beer is cold, and the stadium is clean. Many Cubs players have gotten their start here, and often you'll see guys make rehabilitation starts before going back to Chicago. And hands down, the best fireworks show on the 4th I have ever seen. I went to my first (and not last) Iowa Cubs game last night and it was great! The only downfall to the whole night was that it was 95 degrees and we were in direct sun the whole time we were there. I admit, we only lasted through 4 innings, because we both didn't want to pass out, but the time we did spend there was fun. The stadium was a lot larger than I expected. I ordered my tickets on their website about 3 weeks ago and picked them up at Will Call. No line. Easy peasy. Show your ID and you're all set. Much to my surprise, I found out that I had selected Row 1 seats....and had a baseball player doing stretches right.in.front.of.me. Like crotch up in my face close. I didn't want to get hit with erm, flying balls, so we chose to move up to General Admission. Next time I'm just purchasing those tickets instead, because in all honestly, they were just as good (minus the crotch view). Tix were dirt cheap, me and Hipster had those prime seats for a whopping $25, I think including tax. We got some soda and water, which was like almost $8....so I can see where they make their money now. Other than that, parking near the stadium was no problem, if you're willing to walk a few blocks. Meters stop taking money at 6pm, so it's free by 7pm game time! Can't wait to go back--sit behind homeplate for shade. And bring friends, nieces, nephews, family--definitely a good time for all. read more

I got free tickets from my apartment complex so I can't complain. Except, this place over charges for food and drinks. The parking is free so another incentive as well. The field is nice for minor league. However, I think it could have been a bit better for the capital of Iowa. Oh well, it was a nice time to see the local baseball teams play together. 3.5 for sure. I was in town visiting a friend and of course we had to catch a ball game. I love minor league games because they're always so intimate. Smaller stadiums mean cheaper prices and more ridiculousness like mini burger races, pork chop tosses, and hot dog launches--all of which we witnessed at Principal Park. While I liked this ballpark, I've seen better stadiums from single A ball clubs look better (Charlotte Stone Crabs, for instance). Then again, they play in Florida, not Iowa. read more

Went to redeem my free tickets today and was told no. They don't use coupons during playoffs. On the certificate it only says you cannot use during opening day or July 4th. Doesn't say anything about playoffs. I also had a certificate to shoot the hot dog gun. I really thought it was going to be a fun night with the family. I called to talk to a manager and was sent to voicemail. The girl at the box off just said sorry and because I came at 5 the tickets would be 2 dollars more. Very disappointed. People in Iowa take how nice Principal Park is for granted. It is one of the nicest, cleanest parks in minor league baseball. Being born and raised on the north side of Chicago, and now living on Omaha, I felt like it was my duty to check out my future Cubbies! We went to a Saturday night game, and even though the Cubs lost, we still had a great time. They do a great job of incorporating aspects of Wrigley Field into Principal Park. For starters, they have a mini version of the manual scoreboard. Also, the seats are almost identical to the ones at Wrigley too. (Green plastic seats and all) What really impressed me to was the fandom. In Omaha, the Stormchasers have a nice park, but you feel like most of the folks at the game are there looking for something to do, rather than seriously watching the team they love. (Very few fans wearing Stormchasers gear and what not) In Des Moines, the Cubs fans are fully sporting their hats, jerseys etc. I also love how the stadium is close to downtown, and has a great view of the capitol building from left-center field. The next time my father comes out to visit me, (A die hard Cubs fan) I will definitely take him to a game. read more
