Manfred is friendly and full of great stories for the inner (or outer) camera geek. He does good work and takes pride in what he does. He's pushing 80, but still going strong!!! He is often are back logged on repairs due to several factors, so be patient and expect to have to follow up on your repair order. At this stage of the game he works alone, occasionally sending overflow work to a friend, (he still inspects and warranties the repairs. He's continuously navigating the best way to secure the necessary parts for all the different camera parts. Throughout his career he's been a certified repair tech for Nikon & Hasselblad among others brands. Once you pick up your camera it doesn't hurt to follow up on what was repaired...with so many different repairs it's easy for anyone to forget the details for each repair order. Fred is really good about explaining the repair order and labor costs. I've been doing business here for a solid decade or more, mostly film SLR cameras. I have not used his services for digital cameras, but with all the advancements in technology and the designed obsolescence I wouldn't expect miracles from him or anyone if you need a repair made to a modern digital camera. read more

I left my camera with them just before we had to shelter in place early March due to COVID-19. Henry at Foto Express in downtown SJ recommended I come to this repair shop to have my grandfathers camera be looked at. Thank you Lee and Manfred for holding on to my Canonet QL! Lee called me this morning to tell me that my camera was ready for pickup, but he also gave me an estimate. I must have misinterpreted what he said over the phone, but I thought he said the camera was FULLY repaired, and they were asking me to pay the remaining $150 for what they already worked on. I was worried so I went over today to pick it up but it hasn't been worked on yet. Misunderstanding or not, they seem like professionals and I'd trust them with my camera again for the full repair since they have friends and connections for camera parts! ICT recently did an outstanding job overhauling my jammed Nikon F2. It looks and works like new, ablbeit with a bit of brassing around the edges! They removed the camera skin, fixed the jammed shutter, replaced the battery box, applied a new camera skin, and replaced the light seals- all for an extremely reasonable fee. The turnaround time was a lot shorter that I had anticipated, too. They even enclosed a USB device with the completed repair containing photos of the work in progress. Great job! read more

I had enlisted Fred's help ten years ago when my wife's Sony digital camera developed spots on the optical sensor. He was located in Downtown Mountain View in 2004. Impeccable service back then, and I kept him in mind for any future repair needs. In 2011, I dusted off the old 1958 Yashica D TLR camera left to me by my late father. It had taken hundreds of photos in its time. But the mechanisms were worn out. The film rolling mechanism was cracked in several places, and when I turned the knob, the inner workings fell apart. The shutter winder was also inoperative. I lamented the passing of this great little camera. Then I remembered Fred. I took the Yashica D to him, and he said he would take a look at it. I gave him a $50 check as deposit, which he told me he would return if the camera was irreparable. Within a couple of weeks, he told me that he did not have the parts to rebuild the required subsystems. I asked him to hold on to the camera until an opportunity arose. Cut to 2014. Fred got back in touch with me to say he could now fix my camera. I said "Go!". I arrived to pick it up, and could not believe the incredible work Fred had done. I paid him for the balance. I've since taken the camera on a shoot of Bay Area sites, and it works as if brand new. Can't wait to develop my pictures - and I will update this post accordingly. Some words about Fred: He is a consummate craftsman, and he really understands optics and mechanical engineering. I also should mention that Fred is very friendly and a great person to talk to. We talked for about 30 minutes, about cameras and all sorts of things. I have great trust and respect for him, and if I ever have any need for camera repair again, I am going to him! In two independent incidents of clumsiness, I dropped and broke my 50mm prime and flash. Couldn't even blame the kid for breaking my stuff; she's pretty careful around my camera. In any case I do a lot of indoor photography around the house so I was really sad about losing two of my favorite pieces of equipment. I brought both of them in and got estimates quickly (about a week and a half). Unfortunately the lens was going to cost about 80% of the price for a new one so I decided not to get it repaired. The flash was a bit more reasonable (40% of the price of a new one). The parts were ordered and the work was done quickly. Had I been a more responsive and available customer I probably could have had it back in 3 weeks. Definitely appreciate this service. The price of repairing the lens was higher than I thought. I talked to them a bit about it and it sounds like it's just a ton of work to take a lens apart and put it back together (and get all the alignment correct and everything). I'd guess that it's around a $150-200 minimum for that sort of work (based on my one experience with these guys), so keep that in mind when deciding whether you want to bring it in. A friend of mine borrowed my 5dmkiii and put in the CF card the wrong way, bending a pin and breaking another. I needed to get it fixed. I called in but they couldn't give me a quote over the phone. Fair enough. Though I feel like this is a pretty common problem. Perhaps not common for them. It was a $50 deposit to get it looked it. They checked for parts availability and logistics of fixing it before calling me back. They called me back the next day! The quote was for $350ish dollars on top of the deposit. It's not a bad price considering the camera itself costs 3k. It was fixed in a week. I picked it up, paid, and they let me know that if there was any issues in 90 days, to bring it back in at no additional charge. read more

I had an unusual situation of Hassleblad lens being stuck on an extender - a common problem it seems. To keep things interesting, I do not use a Hassleblad body (know very little about it) but use the lens with a canon body by using an adapter. No store in the bay are with claimed expertise could remove it (most did not have the expertise to try) - they suggested I send it back to Hasselblad to have it removed. Manfred could do it without any damage to either unit. He modified the adapter so the lens would not get stuck again - many tricky issues because the entire setup is meant for a hasselblad body and I was not planning to use one. Still more work is needed - but he will definitely get it right. Courteous, professional and great with his work. Unlike most stores who always want to sell you something, he clearly stated to me (and few who visited when I was there) what he could and could not fix. Will definitely get things done by him whenever needed. Easy 5* read more

I'm really new to shooting film, and got my Minolta x-700 for a year now. It wouldn't turn on for some reason and I went in for help. As someone who's so new to the film camera world, I really appreciated having someone like Manfred who seems trustworthy. I told Manfred that I didn't know what was wrong with my camera, and he took my camera in to inspect. After 15-20 minutes, he came out, having done a THOROUGH inspection, fixed whatever problem that I was having. As I was ready to pay the minimum service fee, which is totally reasonable, he kindly waived it for me and said it was an easy job. It was a wonderful at Thanksgiving gift I guess! There are very few left like him left in the entire United States. It is quite wonderful that such craftsmanship is still extant and available to us here in Mountain View. He can truly fix Canon, Nikon, Leica, Hasselblad and many other brands of camera as well as the lenses. I have four wonderful Canon cameras. Most important to me is that he has a very modern and current knowledge as well as an active relationship with the Canon camera customer support . When he does not have a part or equipment for he gets from Canon. He can even make custom parts that are no longer available. I brought him my modern Canon EOS R digital camera to clean the digital image sensor surface. It had acquired some dust that made spots on some of my pictures. He did an outstanding job well beyond my expectations. He knows how to do the job right and he is relentless until it is done right. Truly impressive and uncommon in this day age. Had the WORST EXPERIENCE ever at International Camera Technicians. Before you get your camera serviced here, you should READ ALL THE POOR REVIEWS FIRST. The technicians are experts, but don't be fooled by their services. You can fall into a trap on paying a lot for their services. My experience is hard to sum up in a few words, so please bare with me... Day 1: I had to get a work camera repaired (cover door of the battery was broken). Right when my colleague and I got there during our lunch hour, I explained to Manfred what happened and he took the camera to the back room for examination. Everything seemed to be going good until my colleague and I realized it was time to go back to work. After 15 mins., I try to wave down Manfred, but he's not paying attention (really focused on the work which was a good thing... I thought). So I go to the back room and tell him we need to leave. He said tell us to leave the camera with him while he looks into the problem more and will give me a call. We say ok and leave. Day 2: He calls me back the next day and tells me the repair will be $250. I tell him thanks for checking, but I'll pick up the camera and check with my manager if she will approve the cost. He says ok. I go to pick it up and they tell me the camera is not ready and has to be put back together. I was on my lunch break again so I asked how long it will take... they tell me a couple of hours. I said I couldn't wait that long and thought it was just a small misunderstanding. So I schedule another time to pick it up. They say ok. Day 3: I call first to see if the camera is ready and Manfred says yes. I go pick it up to find out they repaired the camera. I told Manfred I did not agree to it and he said I did. I said no, this must be another misunderstanding and he said it was not and that I agreed to pay it. Again I said I didn't and then he says he can't release my camera to me because I would have to pay him first. Even though I didn't agree to the cost and repair, I tried to negotiate the price to resolve the misunderstanding. He declines to negotiate (telling me reasons that his place is already saving me money) and tells me he will have to damage the camera again (undo the repair) if I wanted the camera back. I was really shocked at his answer and couldn't believe what just happened. To make this story short, I said forget it and paid for the repair. Then... I notice the Compact Flash Card is missing. He said he didn't have it, which I know he did because my colleague and I were BOTH there to see that he just took the camera right when we got there (yes, another misunderstanding). He denies he had it and then I insisted can he just give it back. He decides to look for it, can't find it and gives me another that I can use which is just 1GB. The experience was so horrible that I just wanted to get out of there and again this was during my lunch hour so I had to go back to work. Now that I'm writing this and reading all the low ratings for this place, I'm actually not thinking I was scammed. He knew what he was doing and took the chance of having me forced to pay the repair. Really not happy about this place, feel like I was fooled and would NOT recommend anyone (especially camera newbies like me) to go there. read more

One of life's numerous ironies is that sometimes a chain or sequence of events that are completely accidental, non intentional, or by virtue of fate and destiny, could lead to another random path(s), such as meeting and getting to know a person, or in this case where normally someone would casually walk by this store, might be prompted to come in and come out writing a review, or in this case, "Yelping". And that person happened to be me today. My late father was a very serious photographer and collector, and he loved this hobby with a passion. One of his last words of wisdom was that no matter how hard you have to work in life, no matter how bad of a day or even longer you had (whether your boss chewed you out or did a R. Kelly and pee'd on you - this part is my words not his) and ended up being stressed to no end of insanity, one of the best things to do to keep your mind off and to reduce the brain neurons from splitting atoms resulting in becoming insane in the membrane, is to take up a hobby. But that's not enough, if you're going to take up a hobby, learn as much as you can about it while enjoying it, and be an expert. That way you will go very far with it no matter what. I inherited some of dad's camera equipment and while I handled one of his cameras and lenses/accessories, there was much that I still didn't know about. As lovely as it would be to keep everything, some items would probably have to be parted with for numerous reasons. International Camera Technicians is a small mom and pop type store that specializes in older (film) camera repairs and maintenance, particularly Leica and Nikon brands. They are located right next door to Plumeria women's clothing consignment store. I had not noticed this place before until earlier this week. Proprietor Fred (full name Manfred Mueller ) is an elderly gentleman from Wiesbaden, Germany who helped me today as I brought a bag of misc. gear from dad's drawer to get an idea of the exact nature of the items, as well as potential worth. As he carefully examined the items, I learned that he not only was very honest, he was very passionate about his business, very knowledgeable and technical (he knew all the various lenses I brought over right away and their characteristics), and that he received all of his camera related training in Germany many many years ago. In one of the cabinets is a very impressive display of antique cameras, some dating over 60 years of age and from Fred's personal collection (not functional, some are perhaps beyond repair or just lack of parts to do so). While I ended up not selling anything today, I walked away learning even more, and I think my father would have made a new friend had he met Manfred, those two would probably talk shop for hours if not days. I also learned that ICT has been around for quite some time and has drifted locations within Mountain View for numerous years (due to lease and landlord issues/changes) and this location is the businesss's latest home. Fred's a good guy, extremely helpful and he won't BS you. Consignments are accepted with a 20% cut going to the store to cover overhead and what not, and if you are not aware of the market, Fred is willing to dig up info on what an item should be worth and priced. With the digital age, anyone who is willing to plunk down top dollar for a new camera/toy can make great pictures. However if you take a kind of photography class from say Foothill or De Anza, the instructor may force you to get an analog/film manual camera, so that you learn the art of lighting, physics, apertures, exposures, and use your skills to make the pictures the old school way, and thus develop your training and also having a good eye. There's always value and history in the old school toys, especially if there are still sentimental hobbyists who appreciate that kind of stuff and can educate the younger generation to do the same. Sadly there aren't many other shops like this surviving to do old camera repairs and maintenance. How ironic that I probably would never have stepped foot into ICT, if it were not for my late father, who also taught me photography the old school way. read more

I purchased an Argus C-3 on ebay, and it sat on a shelf for a few months because the film catch was stuck and I basically didn't know how to use it. After calling around to a few places to find someone to help me, someone reccomended this place. It took a while to find, the other reviewer was right, that if you aren't looking for it it is hard to miss. Fred, the owner, was honestly one of the nicest people I have ever met working behind the counter. He was patient with my inexperience, explained everything to me slowly and clearly, and took the camera apart and cleaned it for me, recalibrated all of the dials, and showed me how to use it. He didn't charge me a dime. I tried to pay him, but he wouldn't let me. He said he was glad to see a young person who appreciated a good film camera in a digital age. Please go here and patronize this shop, because Fred is honestly the nicest person, and he clearly knew what he was talking about. They have a really large selection of new and vintage cameras. He spent about 30 minutes explaining to me why today's cameras are junk and how he can't even get the manufacturers to send him repair parts unless he spends thousands of dollars with them. That, and how today's cameras are designed for obsolescence and are mostly junk. Makes me want to go find an old camera just so I can help keep him in business. Fred is my camera hero. I become concerned sometimes because I know Fred is getting older and might consider retiring at some point. Then what on earth will I do when my cameras need some repair? They aren't making more Freds in the world. He's one of a kind. Most of the reviews are for older cameras (including mine). But I have seen Fred working on digital cameras and I know that he repairs them. I cannot imagine him not using the same care and quality with the new stuff that he does with my old stuff. A couple of years ago, I brought him a 1937 Rolleiflex twin-lens that needed a lot of love and care. It's been cleaned, lubed, had the fungus removed, had all its mechanisms recalibrated to account for the 70 years of lack of service, and it has a new Fresnel focusing screen (one I can actually see through). Thanks to him, I can use this camera as easily as my Nikon. Well, okay, the Rollei doesn't have speed-loading film, but otherwise, it's easy to use now. It takes wonderful pictures. Fred is a craftsman and a really nice man. He's given me an education about the cameras I've brought him, and he has treated me as a valued customer since the first day I walked in with a bad Bronica. He told me to sell that thing as fast as I could because the shutter was junk by design and nothing he could do would improve it. He said he could fix it, and it would work for a while, but then it would fail again, probably in a matter of weeks. And he recommended several different medium format camera options for me, and told me what I should check for with each sub-model. Wow. In April, I brought him a Nikon lens that I love and use pretty much all the time. One I had purchased from his shop years before for a mere $90 on consignment. Its aperture was stuck fully open. I didn't discover its problem until the day before a bat mitzvah I was getting paid to photograph. I could have made due without the lens, but I would have really missed it. Turns out heat had melted all the lens lubricant and it had gotten all over the aperture blades. Too much time in my hot car - shame on me. The whole thing had to come apart and be cleaned. Even though Fred was crazy-busy, he was able to turn around the dismantling, cleaning & repair in a few hours. And even though I'd bought it years before and my six-month warranty from Fred was up, he refused to let me pay him more than 50% of the bill. If you go there, you won't be sorry. The quality of his work is simply excellent, and he'll make you feel welcome. read more

This is the first time I've written a negative review for any business or on Yelp but I feel like this has to be done. Going to Manfred's shop was by far one of the worst experiences I've had as a customer. I've gone to ICT on two separate occasions, and none of them were good. The first time I visited, I brought in my grandfather's Nikon FE2, which would only fire the shutter on bulb mode and no other shutter speeds. This camera was very sentimental to me, so based on good reviews here, I took the camera to Manfred in hopes of getting it in good working condition. Manfred explained his process to me about receiving parts elsewhere, even if they were scarce, to give the FE2 a completely overhaul. So I put in my $50 non-refundable cash deposit and left my camera there. Manfred promised a one month turnaround time, which I felt was fair, and even if he didn't meet that goal then I would still understand. After four months, I called for the fourth time hoping if there was any progress, but Manfred had no luck with getting any additional parts elsewhere, and I was ok with this. What I wasn't ok with was when Manfred offered to sell me another FE2 he just received in his shop for more than half the price it was worth on eBay. Knowing he had my family heirloom and not doing everything he could to repair it, even if he could have used that other FE2 for parts was a bit offensive. In his defense though, using parts from the other FE2 would have been more costly so I understood. The second time around was an even worse experience. I brought in my Nikon F3 and Leica 50mm collapsible Summicron lens in hopes of having better luck of getting them repaired. The Nikon F3 had corrosion on its secondary shutter, and the Leica lens was accidentally popped out of alignment along with the felt and ball bearings coming out as well. Manfred once again explained his process to me about getting additional parts for the Nikon F3, and having to get a new felt material to put the Leica lens back together to acheive infinity focus. While explaining to me about his methods of reassembling the lens he was quite rude and passive aggressive by constantly interrupting me and mentioned how customers don't know how to handle equipment properly and do "idiotic things" to destroy beautiful lenses. I tried not to take offense to that and didn't take it personally, but I couldn't help but feel uneasy about what he just said that placed me in his general category of "idiocy." I put down a $100 cash deposit for the two items anyway since Manfred was reassuring of his abilities to fix both items within three weeks, which I took with grains. Three months later, I called in again and Manfred still did not repair any of the items and was full of excuses. One thing I do have to mention is that Manfred's former associate passed away recently, which left Manfred with having to fulfill all of the orders himself. This is a lot of pressure to put on Manfred, and I just wonder for a man as elderly as himself, why not just retire? Anyway, back to the issues I had with his service. For the Nikon F3 he sent the camera off to his friend who was still finding parts to fix it but they both ended up quoting me $289.95 for it. So not including the $50 deposit, I would have to pay more than what I originally bought the camera for when I could have gotten a new one for half that quote on eBay once again. Unfortunately this business practice feels very scamming and unsustainable. As for the Leica lens he didn't even touch it and even lost the ball bearings I gave him. He claimed I never provided them even when I explicitly pointed out to him where I placed it in a bag upon bringing the lens in. Once again his tone was very condescending and unfortunately I had to cut my losses since he told me he decided not fix the items anymore due to my displeasure with his lack of results for a long period of time. This was definitely a valuable learning experience to never put down a non-refundable deposit unless you're absolutely sure your item can be fixed or if the service has a money back guarantee if there are no solutions or results for the repairs. I hold myself accountable for the blunders I made by obtaining broken equipment in the first place but I would have hoped Manfred would at least be just as accountable by not stacking on extra fees far more expensive than the items are worth to end up not being able to repair them. Please do yourself a favor and take your old and new camera equipment elsewhere for repairs. read more

I had brought in a Nikkor 50mm-200mm lens to Fred's shop to have him look at a possible screw issue. Sure enough, one of the nylon pieces inside the lens was broken. The repair (labor + parts) came up to almost the price of a new lens, so I had to scrap the lens. Fred had me come in, and he spent some time showing me what had happened and chatted with me about how these lenses are built. He's quite knowledgeable. He was kind enough to only charge me a very small fee for evaluating the lens despite all the time he put into taking it apart. I hope I never have to go back to his shop because I don't ever want to have a broken camera or lens. However, if I ever need something repaired, this is the first place I'd visit. I bought a medium format Yashica MAT 124-G twin-lens reflex camera from eBay. I took it to them for fixing up. They gave me a very honest appraisal of what was broken (nothing), and would should be repaired if I planned to use it a lot (lubriaction and adjustments). It has worked perfectly ever since then. I don't understand why anyone would go to any other camera repair store?! Fred is an extremely nice person and his work is amazing. I took a new Pentax K-x to him for a rather embarrassing reason. In my enthusiasm to use my Pentax manual lenses on my new digital camera, I got one of them jammed because of a pin that got stuck into a groove. There were some suggestions on chat rooms that I had read about, but I didn't have the skill or tools to get the lens unjammed. So I went to Fred, took some printouts of the suggestions, and he spent a couple of hours and got the lens unstuck and removed with no damage to either the lens or the camera. He even took out the pin on the lens, so I am now able to use the manual lens on my digital camera. I would strongly recommend Fred for any camera repair work. read more

Fred the proprietor of this shop is an kindly, engaging and insanely knowledgeable fellow who's been a camera & photography expert for at least 50 years! He definitely leans towards film (versus digital) cameras, but knows a lot about accessorizing. I came in here to get some help on setting up my monopod and getting the correct ball-head and he sorted me out in 2 seconds flat! Want old world craftsmanship and knowledge? I used ICT for my studio camera and strobe repairs until I left professional photography 20 years ago...now, in a return to large format photography, pulling out 3 view camera lens whose shutters doubtless need some loving care, imagine my surprise to find the (wonderfully) grouchy guy - Manfred - behind the counter yesterday!! He's not a spring chicken (his partner in the business sadly passed away very recently) and he now works alone; I'm very happy he's still with us and though burdened by the effort it takes to run even the smallest shop these days, he still walks in the door in the morning. His prices are NOT cheap! But you get what you pay for; there's 60 plus years of knowledge packed in his head, most of which is not accessible on the internet. If you think you can haggle the price, go elsewhere... if you have a lower end camera / lens, it probably is more cost effective to replace. Otherwise, _this_ is the place for repairs. read more

My Canon T2i had a broke mic jack. ICT fixed it in 2 weeks and they guarantee the work for 6 months! The service is friendly and funny. My total repair bill was $190, which I feel is fair for a complicated repair. The mechanics are very up front and honest about cost and difficulty of repair. Note: This place is a little hard to see from the road. It is in an industrial office building. read more

I have visited Fred multiple times. He said he was very busy, but still took a few minutes to check out the camera. He diagnosed that the lens was broken, but he couldn't fix it and recommended that I send it back to Tamron. If I wanted a new lens (or used lens) he recommended places to purchase. I have gone to Fred on multiple occasions for the repair and adjustment of old and prized Leica lenses. There is no one in the area, and few in the country in fact, with the depth of knowledge Fred has about fine optics and cameras, particularly Leicas. He really knows what he is doing with these lenses. Fred has had many many years of training and practice, both in North America and Europe. You can't find many people like Fred. When it comes to legacy cameras and glass, there is no one else I would trust. read more

I agree with all the positive reviews. I was at ITC today to have the focus screen in my 5d mk ii replaced. Manfred is great, he's very friendly, and his rate was very reasonable. Great mom-and-pop type store. I'd recommend ITC to anybody who needs some work done on their camera. read more

This may not be helpful, but I had just called in and asked if they could take a look at a problem with my digital Samsung camera, and man guy who spoke on the phone had explained they don't have the resources to fix Samsung cameras, but he was really sorry and suggest that I try an online service center. He's a really nice, humble man and it seems like good people run this place. I wish I could actually meet them in person for a real problem. Haha! read more
