I absolutely loved the concept of this restaurant, and I have not encountered it before anywhere in…read morethe United States. When you enter the restaurant, you receive a plastic card that you swipe whenever you buy something. Order your appetizers and entrees at one station, swipe your card. Order your drinks at the bar (especially off their extensive craft cocktail menu), swipe your card. Go back and order gorgeous and extravagant milkshakes for dessert, swipe your card. One pays at the same desk at the entrance/exit at which one initially acquired the card. So convenient, especially for folks who are not rolling with cash and thus prefer to put the entire meal on one card but who don't want to deal with the hassle of wait service. We're adults and can walk to the appropriate station to order more, thank you very much! I love that all of the bread is made in-house and that the bakery operations are visible through glass walls from the dining area. I love that the dining area is huge and has a wide range of kinds of seating options. The interior design was on point, and the radio was set to a station that was playing popular contemporary pop songs as well as the pop songs that I loved, in the United States, when I was a middle-school student in the mid-1990s. ("All My Life" by K-Ci & JoJo, anyone?) Oh, and the food is delicious! I hadn't eaten a salad in a while, and the one that I ordered was delicious and came with a substantial side of crispy, tasty bread. My husband loved his burger with pulled beef on it. The menu was both in English and in German, which I'm sure facilitates the happiness of all the VW tourists. Nevertheless, even with the English titling, I was confused why the milkshakes are advertised as having homemade marmalade in them. Who puts marmalade in milkshakes? We did not order them, but the shakes look amazing on the restaurant's instagram page. This restaurant is in the heart of Wolfsburg's pedestrian shopping area, but we were able to snag a spot in a very close parking spot nevertheless. After dim sum recently, I had been thinking a lot about Peking Duck and was delighted to see this on the menu as an appetizer. While it would have been fun to do the full experience, the wraps were quite good. Other nice appetizers included Indonesian chicken satay, Japanese yakitori, Thai Tom Kha Gai coconut soup, and more. Mains include Korean bibimbop, Japanese katsukare, and more. There are also sushi rolls available. Everything was very good! The staff were also very nice and food came out quickly. there's one thing this small relatively poor town in east germany is known for: the original…read morebaumkuchen, or tree cake. because of the way it's made, when the cake is cut there are rings like a tree visible that formed within the cake as it was baked. it's really a kind of cake doughnut formed by pouring dough in layers over a rotating stainless spindle that sits beside an open gas flame, and as each layer bakes there's a thin layer of toasted cake that forms on the outside of the cake before another layer is laid down. bit of a mess of course and in a way it's kind of a spit roasted cake, like a bbq with the new layer of dough acting as the bbq sauce, but then that's just this western outsider's warped view. at the end the entire log is coated with dark or white chocolate. while this dessert has been duplicated and modified in other towns in northern germany, as well as in scandinavia, salzwedel claims to have originated the idea. little else as this town's people have to say for themselves i'm willing to give this prize to them. it is of course very delicious. i don't know how long this video will be allowed to remain but it is really worth a watch just to see how ingenious and unique is the methodology. youtube.com/watch?v=ALxaT5V1cAA i'd been here immediately after the reunification, visiting relatives, so we stayed here en route somewhere else in the best hotel in town, the union by name, and in the unlikely event you're headed this way i suggest staying here. i also suggest you revisit your german capability as the degree of english spoken declines rapidly even today once you cross the elbe river which was the western boundary between post war east and west. needless to say the soviets reversed the development of the east in the 20th century and most people spoke russian as a second language. in my way of seeing things, you have the more genuine experience of germany in these former eastern states, especially in towns like salzwedel. the hotels may not be the finest, and you have to work at communication, but the people are actually very friendly and want to be part of today's world. little do they know what they're getting into if they get there, but as the saying goes the grass is always greener on the other side... until you climb over the fence.
