I rarely write reviews for businesses but Penny Royalty is such a special and unique store that I…read morehave to share what a special find this store is. I typically HATE shopping and I get overwhelmed in antique and thrift stores so it took me a few months of hearing about this store to finally make it in. Now it is my GO TO store for my own personal shopping, gifts and housewares. probably 70% of my clothes come from Penny Royalty. I can't find anything at Nordstrom that feels like it fits but I'll walk out of Penny Royalty with 5 new staples that feel like they were made for me. & that's not all! I have lamps, beautiful wine glasses, art, incredible jewelry, vintage copper trays, vases, hand poured candles in antique glass etc that adorn my home and make my house feel magical. Penny Royalty feels welcoming and kind of enchanting. It has changed my perspective on shopping and supporting local businesses because I always feel like I belong here. Nessa, the owner, is an amazing woman and she has an incredible eye and will help dress you and find the perfect pieces or gifts. Every time I'm in the shop there is a stream of people coming in and out just to see her and say "hi." I can't recommend this store enough. I've traveled around the world and been to a lot of cool places but I've never been into a store that is as curated as Penny Royalty. Its hard to imagine in Anchorage :) which is why you dont want to miss it when you're here!

But if you're like me and you like to be hands on before you make a purchase, then this is an ok place to scope out. I recently got some lingerie there that was more than half off, which was a steal. yay. full price would have been a rip. But I also got a toy, which was 30 bucks overpriced, so boo... but, it was, ahem... worth it. That's all i'm gonna say about that. They also redid the store about a year ago and it's much better organized and there's a lot more merch. They have a headshop section with "smoke" stuff downstairs. Some interesting things if you're into that. They had silicone bongs which I've never seen before. I don't know anything about that stuff, but it was kinda neat. They also have some funny weed related novelty items that would make nice gifts for the pothead in your life.... They made the clothing section downstairs smaller, which was a smart move. They've gotten more choosy with what they stock. Mostly all stuff for skinny bitches though. Boo. Upstairs, all the sex stuff. Again, mostly for skinny bitches, lots of gear for exotic dancers like wigs and costumes. Way less shoes than they used to have. Cindy's is still a better bet for people who are in the business of turning people on for a living. They have a very limited selection of costumes for men. Boo. Same for chubby chicks. But I found 4 things that I liked and fit, so yay, not a total loss. They have a variety of novelty items for pre-wedding festivities like penis straws and ice cube trays. There's a limited selection of sex toys... mostly just vibrators and cock rings. Some of their vibrators are the higher quality silicone stuff though. If you're into really hardcore fetish stuff, you're out of luck. The only place in town that has that stuff is Castle, and even their selection is limited (and no, I'm not into fetish stuff... but I figured some people might wanna know, so I'm including this in my review for their benefit.) So if you're looking for any kind of S&M, swings, clamps, pony play, double ended toys, etc, your best bet is online. They do have a few things, but it's novelty quality and not what a person with serious fetishes would invest in. But if you're the kind of person that has a light interest in toy play, then the Look is adequate.

Great experience. Beautiful dresses. The owner Orainda was awesome and her daughter Cora was lovely…read moreas well. I bought my dress there and then went back and my friend bought her dress there. Very pleased overall. Cute shop, private appointment and the owner was so knowledgeable about anything and everything weddings.

I recently visited with my soon-to-be-SIL and it was a very jarring and disheartening experience…read more When my SIL first booked the appointment, she wasn't sure how many people she'd have with her depending on who made it into town. After we got the final number, which was 6, we learned that Orainda's caps the number of guests at 4. My SIL called to cancel the appointment for that reason, as she wanted to respect the shop's policies, but she spoke to Orainda's daughter on the phone who insisted that 6 was totally fine and that we should keep the appointment, which we did. However, when we showed up with 6, Orainda was the one working/hosting our appointment and she immediately made a fuss about our numbers despite my SIL going to lengths to make sure it was okay. She also immediately insisted that we take off our shoes, which is fine and normal, but the approach was very gruff. She then went on a long tangent about family drama she was having which was why her phone kept ringing -- rather than just muting her phone. My SIL is a first time bride and the engagement came fairly fast, so she didn't know EXACTLY what she wanted. Orainda belittled her for this, turning to the rest of us saying, "she doesn't know what she wants, but you all know her better than I do so you better help her figure it out" in a tone that was unamused and rude. The few preferences my SIL did provide were largely ignored, with Orainda insisting she try on a dress that my SIL explicitly said she wasn't interested in. Orainda also asked questions and made comments outright about body type etc that were rude and uncalled for, or at the very least were lacking tact and sensitivity. On top of this, when it came time to try dresses on, my SIL wasn't given the option for any of us to help her with changing, but rather Orainda went right in and gave a strange spiel about how she "wasn't looking at" my SIL and how she "didn't judge" but didn't make my SIL feel comfortable during the changing process. She didn't really give my SIL much of a choice to consent to have the owner all up in her business while changing. During the try ons, Orainda repeatedly made comments that made us all look at each other like "did she really just say that?" She was very blunt about her opinions and acted like her opinion was the most important one in the room, even when we didn't ask for an opinion. She also consistently gave unsolicited advice, not just about dresses or weddings but about medical matters for friends of the bride that were with her. When that guest expressed that she had the situation addressed, Orainda continued to insist the friend follow her advice. It was very odd and off putting. By the end, we had narrowed it down to a couple of dresses and we didn't even have time to try them back on because the next appointment was walking in while my SIL was still in a dress. Had my SIL wanted to walk out with a dress that day, she couldn't have because she wasn't even given the choice since the next appointment was starting (which Orainda made sure we knew). The whole process felt rushed and unprofessional from beginning to end. We should have read the reviews before we came that the daughter provides a positive experience, but the owner herself not so much.
