However, because this was my first time working with them, and because I required an unusual and critical image size, I elected to drop off my image file in person. At that time I discussed my "vision" and expectations for the final image with one of the partners. Though I was ordering only a single print my questions were addressed and I felt valued as a customer. The "meeting" wasn't long, but I wasn't made to feel rushed. I left feeling confident that I'd found a collaborator rather than a vendor. Upon inspection, the print itself is exactly what I hoped for. I received a prompt reply asking for more specifics. Initial communications were good, but then my department received new mandates about the materials we needed so I went to follow up with The Print Shop liaison, Chuck. In my email to them, I gave more specific information and needed an updated quote to take back to management for approval. No reply from them for a week now. I don't know what happened, but they went from same day answers to the cold shoulder after we submitted the additional information with the request for an updated quote. We decided today not to go forward with The Print Shop for our printing needs.

Their consistency is unmatched when it comes to quality and customer service, my two favorite things. With my latest printing request, I decided to contact a local printer instead since it was a smaller job (but still, a very important job). And the nightmare began-- with the local shops my emails were going unanswered, quotes were being delivered weeks later, and when I was finally able to get a response from someone and my product printed, I was disappointed (to say the least) with the results. I even had the local shop re-print...but round two was still not up to my admittingly high standards. So, I did what I should have done in the first place, and I contacted Richfield Printing. Mike gladly accepted my job and patiently answered my extensive questions. The job was printed the next day, and I was provided a tracking number the day after that. Two days later, the package arrived. I must say-- I was a bit nervous after the stress and negative results I'd experienced with the local printers. I opened the box and was immediately pleased with the care that went into the packaging. My product was beautifully separated, wrapped, and protected. (A very nice surprise compared to the way the previous shop had rubber-banded and thrown the product into a paper bag.) Based on the presentation, I knew what came next had to be good...and it sure was. Upon immediate glance, everything looked great...in fact, too great. I was so used to disappointment, this all seemed too good to be true. So I went back to look at every single piece, searching for error, but I found nothing. Only perfectly printed and assembled sheets of paper. Wow. With the abundance of quick-stop print shops, it's a very special thing to find a quality shop like Richfield Printing. I had the privilege of attending a studio tour of the facilites where he produces his art. Stationery, business cards, invitations, certificates...you name it and he can print it. Have him print an invoice; that too will end up looking like an artifact :) He took the time to walk us through the entire process and patiently answered all our (mostly my) questions. He even allowed us to print little booklets and sent up back with souvenirs. His website is a great intro to his work, but if you can setup some time with him to visit the studio, you will fall in love with this method of print. Oh, I should also mention that he even tooled his own equipment to make his own paper at some point. Interesting process, interesting work and an interesting guy behind it all who is willing answer any questions you have (regardless of your print experience). Don't just check out the studio, give him your business and support a true craftsman.

There are now many more people experimenting with letter press in Minnesota, and some are pretty good. But I doubt that there are any who are in the same category as Nomadic Press in terms of quality and value. His dedication to traditional and time-honored methods of production and service alone puts Nomadic in a separate category, but he is also an artist with considerable taste and heart who can guide the customer to the best available result in the market. My business cards are not only read, but literally fondled by people I hand them to. They have weight, texture and they mean business. The Pantone colors specified by the designer were perfectly matched in the inks mixed by Kent.
