Flocks of students come and go through Leeds, moving every year and needing to get rid of or attain furniture every time they do. Junk Again are aware of this and have cleverly positioned themselves not far from the postcodes that are predominantly student populated. If you are looking for a cabinet, a table, or arm chair, or are looking to get rid of, a fridge, a freezer, or chimney pot, Junk Again is a great place to go. They are slightly chaotic but that just adds to that old fashioned feel of shops of this type. Plus no-one will look down their polished nose at you as they so often do in Habitat.

However, pretty much the only thing that we required for our move was a sofa and some arm chairs. Enter: Junk Again! My old housemate had spotted Junk Again on her way through Woodhouse and suggested that we tried here for a cheap second hand suite. I was game for any bargain and so when she called me, all a fluster, to tell me about this awesome sofa, two arm chairs and a pouffe for a mere £40, I came immediately to the scene. Yes. That's right. All that for forty flippin' pounds. The friendly chap explained that he had planned to have them cleaned but hadn't yet, so was willing to let them go for that much - all we needed to do was clean them. No probs, Handy Hire in Headingley solved that one for us dirt cheap too! We couldn't have been more chuffed. Inside you'll find an array of lovely old furniture and the odd antique, for seriously cheap prices. My advice is: if you're moving look here first. I've a few more things I need myself so I'm planning a re-visit very soon...

The White Company has a very distinctive style and the clue is in its name, with the majority of their products in varying white, cream and neutral tones. Simple, yet sophisticated, the theme runs throughout their clothing and home ware ranges. Their clothing range is carefully in keeping with the minimalist chic of the brand, think a classier Boden without the often over- enthusiastic brightly-coloured fruit prints. Probably aimed at women in their forties and over, it actually has many pieces which are quite versatile due to their simplicity and could suit a range of ages and tastes. The home ware section included some very pretty bed-spreads and vintage-style quilts and they also bathroom accessories and storage, furniture and a range of gifts. The clothing range extends to children and babies, adding a few splashes of colour to the otherwise neutral palette. There are also some pretty cute soft toys and wooden blocks etc. for babies. The White Company also sells a range of scents for body and home, which I expect were responsible for the yummy smell I described earlier! Overall the products are very tasteful and due to its generally neutral and minimalist style it is a good choice for gift buying as would suit many tastes. The store in Leeds is amazing, spread up over 4 floors (yes, even the attic is cram packed) they've such a range of furnishings & accessories - although none sale/discounted prices are on the steep side for some items there's others that you can't understand why they're so cheap! My tales of woe however, aren't regarding the store itself but the stores & aftercare team - I bought a (very nice ;o) ) chrome & leather rocking chair from them, which was delivered very timely with a great service of the delivery people texting you to keep you updated & provide you with an opportunity to text back with an alternative time/date at your own convenience. Unfortunately the warehouse packed my delivery incorrectly, and I received 2 seated sections for the chair & no back piece. Mistakes happen yes, so I called them & explained but was told it would be another month before they could rectify it - clearly I wasn't going to accept this, so the customer service officer agreed that she would call around the stores & get someone to ship one out to me. All good? No! Didn't hear anything back so I called again - no record of my previous contact, so had to start the fiasco all over . Eventually getting a new piece for the chair..

It's a pure treasure trove of locally crafted art work, paintings, crochet, knitting, jewellery, decorative pieces, hand bags, furniture and more. Each section has its own personality, and the shop shines as a haven of talent, made up of the various creative items displayed within. I realise this perhaps speaks to those who enjoy pretty things a little more than those who don't, but I'd whole heartedly recommend anyone wander in and take a good long browes - be it for gift shopping, inspiration, or simply to marvel at what can be created by our local talent. What's more, Fabrication hold regular classes, including sewing lessons, crochet and more. I've intended upon taking a class for some time, but haven't found the time, although I've heard some very good reports from folks I know who've partaken. Essentially, I've wanted to learn how to sew for a while, since it's one of the many talents my mother has that I didn't take advantage of whilst at home, and would love to see if I can continue the trend. They also have a limited range of beds, dining tables and wardrobes. As well as furniture they have plenty of carpet samples on display. Though if it's a carpet you're looking for you're probably better of missioning- it across the road as the other shop is VAST and sells carpets carpets carpets! They come in a huge variety of thicknesses, colours and patterns which should satisfy most tastes and budgets. The cute and trinkety items that I found within only served to match that mood, as did the pleasant aroma and very "zen" vibe of the goods inside. Whilst it's true the items aren't cheap, since I'm sure you could get similar for less if you really tried, they are delightful. The kinds of furniture you would love as a show off piece in your home and more than a few knick-knacks that would make a delightful addition to anyone's mantel piece collection. Think Eastern style decorative items, ornaments and such like and you'll have an idea. A little like Shared Earth but less obviously fair trade. (They might be, I'll have to check that though!) I think I'll certainly be back for the gorgeous green tea sets, as they would make a great gift for many friends of mine, though I must admit there's a huge chance it will be kept for yours truly... Surely worth a browse for a moment or two, and as Christmas looms, perhaps just that little bit more.

They would look very at home in a country kitchen with a gingham table cloth and an apple pie in the oven! Inside the shop is full to the brim with such a mad range of bits and bobs it's pretty hard to pin it down. There's loads of crockery, some of which I rather love decorated with cutesy floral patterns and just about every little useful item you could have in your house! One thing that stood out for me was an absolutely GIANT charming retro-look thermos flask. I wanted it but couldn't think what for. It would probably hold a good few gallons! How very odd! Along with supplying all the bits of homely stuff you never knew you needed but probably do, they also do a key cutting service. Yay!

One of those stores that sells just about everything you need and a lot of stuff you don't, JJ's is cheap, cheerful and exactly what you want from such an establishment. While I went in for a padlock, the bright displays and cheap prices meant I very nearly came out with a box of fireworks and children's paddling pool too, so try and stick to your guns unless you want a house full of tat. The staff are pretty helpful too, although it might take a while to catch their eye - the place was heaving when I visited, and it was only a Wednesday morning.

My particular favourite is the upstairs section. Here's where the items get slightly less bargainous and become a little higher end... They've beds, lamps and all other kinds of home furnishings in a range of styles. Faux-antique right through to the more modern sleek look. I bought an awesome 'telephone box' lamp for my room at home, which is so kitsch and delightful and only set me back £15. (I can imagine it costing a ton more in a vintage shop!) My Mum was particularly overjoyed with a red painted vase that she picked up as well, of which they had many different shades! So, there's plenty to get excited about, and not too pricey as well. However, all that glitters is not gold. I did come away having purchased a few oil reed scent dispensers (the pots of oils with the wooden reeds) and they simply don't work at all. They were only a pound each, but I can see why they were so cheap as they give off no scent at all! Even so, I'm pleased as punch with my lamp so that more than makes up for it!

It was the first time I'd been in a shop which I cannot categorize by what it sells, IT SELLS EVERYTHING !! From bleach to crisps, rugs to xbox games, they have almost everything under one roof. The only thing I can say lets it down is a lack of electrical goods like TV's but if you're looking for a pack of brass tacks and a birthday card for auntie Mabel this is a good place to start........ and if you're feeling tired you can nip upstairs and pretend you're testing a bed out :)
