DoubleTree By Hilton London Greenwich - Guest room

Deptford, Greenwich

This Doubletree is in an historic building that has quite a unique and satisfying charm. The staff…read morewas absolutely outstanding, as was my room, with quite a view across the Thames. As you pull up to the hotel, you will be welcomed by the literal "rolling out the red carpet". It is located in a very quiet residential area within easy walking distance to shops, restaurants, and attractions. This morning, I walked 1 mile to the Prime Meridian at the Royal Observatory and, of course, stood with one foot in the Eastern Hemisphere and the other in the Western Hemisphere. I then walked down to the Cutty Sark, and discovered the entrance to a tunnel where you can walk under the Thames! I travel to London often as a volunteer medical courier, so I know I'll be back here soon.

I looked high and low…read morefor a decent hotel as I was unable to book air bnb due to the closeness of our traveling date. I have stayed in DoubleTrees in the past and was comforted I would be staying in a brand known to me. It was a long traveling day: I had flown from Las Vegas to LAX, retrieved hubs, made sure all our travel togs were in order, flew LAX to Heathrow and then took a 90 minute cab ride from Heathrow to Greenwich. Holy Mole were we exhausted. I booked the hotel via hotels.com and was wary of using a third party. Upon check in, my worries were unfounded. My hilton rewards account was requested and provided, we were checked in quickly and provided a warm cookie which our weary jet lagged asses gratefully accepted. Once we found our room (small incident with a 4 that looked like a 9) we settled in. Yes the room was tiny but it was quiet and the bed was comfortable. There was an electric kettle in the cupboard and a sturdy hair dryer in the desk. The bathroom was a bit strange. There was no shower door, just a partial glass partition which meant the floor got wet. All the shelf space was above the toilet. Ehh. A bit annoying but not worth making a fuss over. We had a lovely view, there was free wifi and a couple of bottles of water in the room as well. But the bed, sooo lovely. The bar adjacent to the lobby served up some mean drinks. Yum. If I return to the U.K. I have no issues staying here again.

De Vere Devonport House - Photo online for a twin room vs the reality! (They insisted it was a twin room, but housekeeping moved the beds!!)

Very disappointing experience. I stayed here with my mother for a London weekend getaway. I am…read morefamiliar with the area and the De Vere brand and found a great deal. I booked us a twin room for 2 nights. I arrived early from my flight, so I knew I couldn't check in but wanted to drop off my bags. When I came through the entrance by the reception desk, nobody greeted or acknowledged me. No friendly smiley welcome at all. When I did speak to someone they advised the room was not ready and to return later. Once I did return later and had checked in, nobody offered to help with our bags, which I would expect from a 4* hotel. When we arrived at our room, it looked nothing like the photo used online for a twin room, it was very obvious a double room. I called down to reception and I was assured it was a twin room and that housekeeping must have just pushed the beds together as normally there would be a bedside table between the beds. This was obviously not the case as there was a double headboard attached to the wall and had there been a table between the beds, you wouldn't have been able to open the door as the room was too small!! We were offered an alternative room, that we were advised was the only other twin room available. I went to see it, but it was exactly the same, but the room was slightly larger. It was still two beds pushed together. The staff also advised me that it would be a noisy room as the event space outside the window had been rented for that evening and they had a DJ. As such, I kept with the original room. The hotel is very tired and in need of an upgrade. The bathroom looked like it was being held together with glue. Different skirting was butted together and things were cracked. It needed a renovation. I would advise to bring your own toiletries as those provided are not of great quality and you only got a body wash and shampoo combo. We also only got 2 towels and a hand towel. We did not use any other facilities of the hotel and used it more of a base to sleep. One morning we did enquire with staff if there were engineering works on the nearby train in Greenwich as we couldn't locate train times, but the women advised she doesn't travel to work via the train so didn't know. You would think a London hotel would know if their local line was running or not. The hotel I would say is more of a conference/events hotel. I would not consider it to be worthy of 4* either. It was basic. It was clean, I would give it that.

The reception has a nice lounge area with two computers to use, a bar serving cocktails and gin, and free water. There's also free wifi. The hotel is very clean and they have laundry available. The nearest station Cutty Sark is a 5 min walk away, and the hotel is beside greenwich market and Cafe Rouge where breakfast is served. Breakfast is not served by Ibis: when you pay for breakfast it just gets you vouchers for cafe rouge, which allows you to pick one thing to order off the menu. It's sit down and order, and the food is terrible and service is extremely slow, so I would not recommend breakfast there. I suggest booking without breakfast and eating elsewhere as there is many cafes in the area. Lack of toiletries: only soap, no shampoo or anything else provided.

Some of things I enjoyed about my stay was the free wifi and plentiful outlets. However, there were some things I didn't like. One is the lack of wash clothes. Not everyone uses liquid soap and carries a loofa with them. Furthermore, the beds are very hard. I felt like I was sleeping on a slab of rock. Very uncomfortable. Continuing, the shower had an odd smell to it when I arrived, like it hadn't been cleaned entirely. Also, I found it concerning that the linen was not washed with bleach. Gross. To top things off, the check in process is unique. There is no front desk. You check in with a person in a red shirt with an iPhone. I wasn't very comfortable with this arrangement for security reasons. It could be very easy for someone to imitate this and trick confused tourists. I would say this is a great hotel for a short stay. But that's about it. 2/5
