My partner and I took a boat out to Innisfallen Island after visiting Ross Castle today. The boat ride cost €15 cash per person. You can book in advance online, which we did, but it was cancelled the morning of due to it being an in-service day so we paid cash in person instead. The ride itself took about 20 minutes and our guide Mike was very nice and knowledgeable. He told us all about the island and its history and pointed out some points of interest to us. He gave us tips about making the most of our time at the island and when we arrived he helped us into the docks and then left us to our own devices. We were the only people on the island so it was incredibly peaceful.
When you arrive you see the abbey where the monks practiced. It's ruins now of course, but it was built in the 11th century and you can tell it was strong then. The island was raided many times over the years when it was occupied so there isn't much in terms of archaeological finds.
There is also a building where the monks prayed that has a very old cross in it. People seem to leave coins there, perhaps in prayer or asking for blessings. There's a separate building for where the monks used to sleep. You can head away from the buildings and take a nice nature walk if you want, and you might even get to see some deer! If you're into geocaching, there's a cache over on the NW side of the island too.
This is a fantastic spot that doesn't seem to be super well-known to tourists, so I absolutely recommend it. It is worth the time and the cost! read more
