However, the opening reception by Betz Gallery for Arte Caliente http://www.artshound.com/event/detail/26753 has exposed me to new local talent, and I am eager for more galleries. This small gallery used to be someones home; there is no furniture now, just walls covered periodically with art in three bedrooms. The "kitchen" area was a source of congestion as those waiting in line for a margarita intersected with those moving inside the house for the art. The neon plastic martini cups contained one mean margarita, by a new brand of Mexican tequila; the name escapes me. El Tiempo provided the munchetizers, which were: a flauta, nachos, and stuffed jalopenos. I can't say that I enjoyed the stuffed 'penos--- that wasn't an ordinary 'peno no siree; it was probably a jabanero, a jalopeno stuffed with habanero pepper based on how it made my tongue feel. Perhaps one of my favorite portions of the evening was seeing a group of three performers sing and dance Aztec music, complete with Aztec clothing. The costumes were amazing. The headdress to one of them looked like peacock feathers. They had peacocks in the Western hemisphere?! The staff was professional and efficient, even after it started to rain; they were drenched, no umbrellas or ponchos for them. You see, about an hour and a half into the opening reception the the clouds decided to drop some water off over the Houston area. A crowded hot gallery doesn't make for the best atmosphere, so I was ready to leave. I had seen this art selection. For a free event, they didn't spare a thing when it came to complimentary perks. And the original artwork, interesting performers, and passionate artists made for a pleasant night at Betz Gallery.

I enjoyed learning just a few things I didn't know about can gogh you really get to learn about the man and art there is a lot of information/ it is less interactive than I imagined and less photo ops than I imagined. It is very much like an art gallery the first part,,, and the second part is very relaxing - I've been wanting to attend one for a very long time, so I am glad it is checked off the bucket list. This is one of Houston's few all photography galleries that is still kicking. At least in the…read morecommercial scene--this is the case. I've always enjoyed the shows I've seen here. The space is pretty cool--it stories multiple floors, making it a wonderland of imagery to wander through. They specialize in non-digital photography if I'm not mistaken. The crowds at their openings are not overwhelming, so appreciating the art without feeling like you went to see Metallica at a standing room only show is not a problem. Parking on opening night is valet--so bring your cash!

Some pieces were comic book like paintings. Others looked gothic. Even a few seemed a little disturbing. But, it was nice because it was a quick look around, and then you're on your way. No one working at the Amazon site stopped us to ask us what we were doing there. I think they see a lot of people come by just to appreciate the artwork on their business' walls. If you're looking for something quick and safe to do, swing by this spot.

I don't go to Rice or anything but anyone is welcome to come to quite alot of the events and/or exhibitions they have..! Some of the few I've been to are the recent Yoshitomo Nara exhibition and the beekeeping/real fish painting workshop ‍ Those were really fun and wonderful, at the time I got the chance to go with a friend which made it even better. Would recommend checking out what they have running and making memories with someone chu luv..! Butt! It's also the perfect spot for a solo date too. Don't feel shy going alone ‍ In fact, on my most recent visit this last Saturday (02/28/2026) I went solo to an outdoor show they apparently hold seasonally. Sip & Stroll Art Tour…read more Have you ever wondered how art is selected for a certain space? Was it commissioned? Donated? Was it made specifically for a space? Was it already designed? So interesting to join the Moody Center for the Arts Executive Director Allison Weaver on a walk to explore the art on the Rice University campus. An art gallery. Tents with murals. Indoor and outdoor stops. So much fun to stroll through the campus and enjoy works by Jaume Plensa, James Surls, Beverly Pepper and Mark di Suvero. Love the classic giant people formed by huge letters sculpted by Jaume Plensa. The Crown Fountain in Chicago is another well loved piece by Jaume Plensa. Interesting to hear how a work of art either fits or does not fit into a space. For example, Po-um by Mark di Suvero was in a place where the kinetic sculpture did not get the wind it needed to be able to move. Imagine having to uproot and transplant a twisted steel work that weighs hundreds of pounds, but that is what was done. Jaume Plensa wanted his sculpture Mirror to be along a walkway that would have been sweltering in the Houston heat. It looks so much more inviting nestled among the oaks. In fact, you can walk into the sculpture and sometimes students bring chairs to study near the piece. Interesting to hear also about the sea-saws that were used during the pandemic to allow students to interact while keeping them safely six feet apart. The tents served a similar purpose, but also served as a canvas for oversized murals. Don't miss James Turrell's Twilight Epiphany Skyspace. Climb the stairs to reach the second floor. Our tour ended at sunset just in time to watch the sunset sequence which lasts for about 40 minutes. So beautiful. Check out the Moody Center for the Arts Calendar. Admission and tours are free. Going there for the Zine Fest this past weekend, I…read morewas pulled in so many directions as I tried to take in as much of the art as possible on display. I most appreciated the logistics of the space -- ample parking, well-maintained bathrooms, working A/C, clear indicators of where all the booths were located, and even clear annoucements letting us know when the mechanical bull was ready to be challenged! The subtle interior design was a mix of an industrial concrete playgrounds meets adult Nickelodeon with fun, frenzy galore and highlighting community artists generously. I am so happy I finally got around to visiting and look forward to returning to attend one of their community workshop classes!

I must've came here like when I was five or eight years old I can't remember. That was a long time…read moreago. My uncle brought us here for some sort of show. I want to say it was some sort of doll show or art show I can't remember. It was years ago. Probably 35 years ago if I had to be exact. We're here we are again. On a cold winter day me and my girlfriend decided to to come check out the orange show. I'm glad we did. It's a very unique place. Lots of cool looking art. One of a kind. You gotta love Houston for stuff like this. Kind of gives you just that nostalgia feeling. I can't remember how long ago this was made but it's pretty old. I believe this is some sort of historical home now. Or a free exhibit for the community I can't remember actually but if you never been here before I highly recommend you come by and stop by and see it. Houston history.
