One program that I went to on a Thursday was the science program that is in the afternoon and they did a segment on optical illusions!

The YMCA offers plenty of swim classes, but relatively low number of options for land classes given the price of the memberships. Since this pool is run by the Hillhurst/Sunnyside association the price is very reasonable to get in. A very economical activity for families. They have a grassy area where you can lay down your towels/blanket and sit. They also have a few plastic chairs to use however those get scooped up fast, so come early if you want a chair. On hot days, this place is always packed especially with kids. As for food. I would pack a few snacks or even a picnic and bring them. This pool has very limited snacks and no real food. Things like popsicles, chips and chocolate bars only. Do note, they only accept cash. Swimming makes you hungry, so come prepared with food or with cash. Great little place to escape the heat and be outside swimming. As we know Calgary doesn't have many of these outdoor pools and this place has been around a long time. I used to always love this YMCA but recently I have been feeling unsafe here as the train station is so close by I think a lot of homeless people come here as I have seen people sleeping inside before. The step class was great! It wasn't too crowded so I had tons of space and they also provided towels. Being a beginner, I totally thought I would miss many steps but the instructor gave great instructions which were easy to follow. Overall, the staff here are friendly and helpful - especially the girl at the front desk who, when I was asking about membership, asked how old I was?!?!?! I'm well past the age of 18 which is an adult memebership! lol. I guess I coulda gotten a teen membership?!?! The building is connected right beside the Calgary Public Library. It's clean and nice & separated into two floors. They have all the usuals here. A pool, a fitness area, a weight circuit, stretch area, & gym. The locker room is fairly long with ample lockers for usage. They provide locks too! If you need a lock, make sure you get one at the entrance gate (they'll ask for a card with your name on it to hold it). There are a LOT of machines upstairs in the fitness/weight area. The machines are newer and fancy with lots of variety. I even saw one that simulated moving uphill on cross country ski's - it was cool. I was there at 10am and it was BUSY! For the busier weight machines, I had to wait my turn.... which was kinda awkward since the machines are kinda close together with only room between them for traffic flow, so I felt like I was in the way of traffic while waiting. One last thing... they provide 'wet wipes' for you to clean the equipment after your usage which makes me happy cuz I know that they care about not spreading germs. =)

There is a climbing wall, a huge water slide, a tarazan type rope, huge hot tub, large kiddie pool, diving board and lazy river. My kids love it. I booked a birthday party here and they have several rooms to choose from and the price is pretty decent. You can bring in whatever food you want and they set up and clean up the room for you. You can put up your own decorations but time is limited in the room so I never did. They provide wrist bands for the kids and if I recall correctly you get a couple for the adults who are supervising. My only complaint is the girls at the front where you go to pay for swimming were harsh with the kids who were really excited to go in, telling them to go back and line up on the other side, there was no marked signage as to where the line up starts and its not like Vivo where if you have a pass you can go on through the fast line. Other than that its a really good activity center to visit if you don't mind making the 20 min drive out of Calgary.

What a fantastic facility!…read more I play in a recreational sports league called "SuperJocks", where 5 teams of women play a different sport each week. Many of our games are booked at the Calgary Jewish Center, so after a number of years in this league, I am quite impressed with this facility. I haven't seen the entire centre, but the area that I frequent has a very large gym, well-equipped change rooms, and our games are played in a fully stocked gymasium, where we play volleyball, basketball, dodgeball, floor hockey and soccer. I have also taken some yoga classes there, and their yoga studio is very impressive as well! If you live in the SW, definately check out the programs at this center. It is open to all to take fitness classes!
