Note: Customers expecting cheerful, smiling service may be taken aback by the Russian way of doing things. While visiting Russia years ago to adopt my son, I was also taken aback by the unsmiling, seemingly uncaring demeanor of the people around us, primarily store employees. I came to learn this is part of Russian culture: If someone is overly friendly, that creates suspicion: Why is this stranger being so friendly? Are they trying to con me or sell me something?
