We pulled into the lot, and to be honest, we looked at each other and said, "ehh, we'll see." It looks like a 1970's roadside motel, which, no lie, was super intriguing. Walk in the front door, and MY MAN! From the outside it seriously doesn't look like this place should exist. But it does! It has all the personality of a neighborhood dive bar and all the best things you love about your favorite karaoke bar. Because, yeah, this is a karaoke bar. And it's a great one. But karaoke is not what makes Water's Edge a great bar. It's not even the food, which by the way is phenomenal (try the pepper jack cheese cubes!). What makes Water's Edge a great bar is what makes any bar great - it's the bartenders. Daniel was engaging, friendly, funny, and -- most importantly -- he actually appeared to love his job. The crazy thing is that attitude seemed to permeate the staff, even as the night went on. (Cause yeah, of course we stayed.) And that, my friends, is evidence of one thing - a good boss. After meeting Ozzie, her infectious enthusiasm and charm made it clear to us that she IS the reason Water's Edge is now our go-to for every future visit to the KC area, and we may even be so bold as to claim it as our own neighborhood bar, as long as it's cool that we consider it a pretty big neighborhood. They offer daily specials, weekly trivia contests, and a live music. Entertainers generally play live music several nights a week. Sinclairs host mostly acoustic performers, mainly on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays: 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Most of the entertainers feature guitar playing solo artists in the bar area. As for the food... it's all pretty tasty. Served in an upscale fashion. And worth mentioning is THE ABSOLUTE BEST MEATLOAF I have ever eaten outside of my own kitchen; and yes, possibly even better than my own... which speaks volumes because I'm generally an excellent cook and extremely particular diner. (Not bragging - just emphasizing that my standards are high). This meatloaf is hearty, rich, and moist, with a firm meaty texture (Not over done with fillers). It's cut generously and served over freshly mashed potatoes topped with a complex & flavorful sauce I'd liken to a rich brown gravy with a hint of herbs & possibly a tad bit of steak sauce for good measure... Its the star. I just wished they served this on their daily menu! Speaking of... their entire menu is thoughtfully made, and the chef deserves major kudos for their talents in the kitchen. I finally got up the nerve to go inside, and discovered I had been wrong. I've been there during the day and at night, and haven't seen a hint of trouble. It's a blue collar bar for sure, a mix of people my age and older people. The bartenders are exceptionally pleasant and the regulars have all been nice so far. The bar is L-shaped and located immediately inside the door, there is a large seating area to the left of the bar. On a recent visit, my brother and I were mistaken for traveling musicians by an older guy to the left of us. We still have no idea what gave him that impression. :) As decent and friendly as this place turned out to be, it's not for hipsters or the casual drinker. This is the kind of place where alcoholics and alcoholics in training go to spend their evenings getting their daily medication. Trivia fact: Ranch House is the oldest bar in Eastern Jackson County. It has been in continuous operation for about 55-60 years, possibly longer. The building is probably much older than that.
