Avoid this place! It's much better to order whatever you need from Wee. This store charges nearly double the price for everything, and it's just not worth it! I felt bad because the lady at the front seemed so sad, so I ended up buying a 10-pound bag of basmati rice for $28. Small local Asian grocery store with a decent range to make a majority of Asian dishes at home. I dinged a star only because some things are extremely marked up. Example was a 2.5 lb thin sliced rib eye beef for shabu shabu that was bought from the GW in Monterey Park and then they put their own label over and marked it up at $16.95 a lb which is crazy because most places in the SGV typically charge $10 a lb for that. I get that there's a means of shipping it over but at nearly $7 a lb add on seems unreasonable. Otherwise still a good place for some other Asian produce and a quick stop for pantry staples. I don't visit much other than if I need something quick and they are nearby, but of course - I still appreciate them being an Asian grocer to the local area. read more

From the outside, this seems like a standard small Asian grocery -- and it is, but it's such a lifeline for lots of students and other locals in the area. Finding something from home you haven't been able to source elsewhere makes the place feel magical. I shopped here a lot as a student at UCSB, and now I still always make a point to visit whenever I'm in town. They're always stocked up on British teas, chocolates like Cadbury's and Mars products, drinks like Ribena, and some tinned and jarred goods that you can't find at regular US supermarkets. My brother also recently found some European style back bacon in the freezer section, which I kicked myself for never having searched out properly. It's pretty hard to come by. They use the same distributor as some other companies I've found, so I'm hoping they'll be open to special orders in future. Some import items are marked up by quite a bit. Since I only visit once in awhile I tend not to mind what it costs but some items, particularly the teas and chocolates, are on the pricey side. I like that they're a reliable resource for those things, though, and mostly everything has a decent sell-by date. At the front of the store they also have a lot of dishware and home goods, which vary in quality but they have some really cute stuff. read more

We went there yesterday, and asked for assistance from the female owner that was just sitting down but then she responded in a rude way, and when we pay she thought we are leaving and told us not to leave coz we still have change still in a rude tone of voice. She should not go to her store if she's not in the mood than giving her customers a bad attitude. If can give negative star for them I would. read more

This mart's solid. You can find many Indian spices, Moroccan sardines, Chinese cooking products and more. This is about as close as you can get to 99 Ranch back in Orange County. Prices are slightly higher when compared to Oriental Market in Goleta, but both are marked higher than what you'd find in OC. However, I feel like you should check out Oriental Market for slightly lower prices than here. Also, Almost everything you find here is for individual/single household portions, so don't expect to find anything in huge quantities. It's convenient location is great, it's clean, and customer service has been very good. read more

The Vietnamese lady (owner) always gives me dirty look and so rude I stopped going . The other staff were helpful, but she just ruins it for me, strange vibes. Many items don't even have prices. Once I bough spices that were expired more than a year which I didn't realized until I got home. disgusting. A very pleasant surprise in Goleta. I just moved here from San Francisco, where I have been spoiled for the past ten years by *seven* whole neighborhoods of Asian grocers (San Francisco Chinatown, Clement Street, Oakland Chinatown, Milpitas, Japantown and El Cerrito. Well, eight, if you count the Alemany farmers market...) But I digress. When I first walked in, I was a bit put off by the prices, but soon discovered that the price premium was worth it. This sweet little store is jam-packed with not only Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, and Indian goodies, but also a surprisingly well-curated selection of European ingredients. PG Tips tea, Crunchie Bars, German Spaetzle noodles, imported Thai fish sauce, unsweetned shredded coconut, roasted coconut juice. Curry leaves! Yes, curry leaves--that fresh ingredient so coveted in the Bay Area, that when you are fair of skin and try to buy some at Vik's in Berkeley, you are interrogated about your intended use of said leaves, and they are only handed over when you utter the secret phrase, "I am student of Ruta Kahate's". I promise you that is a true story, and my only experience of racial profiling to date. Plus, the shopkeepers are incredibly friendly and have infectious smiles. $5 minimum for CC is Ok but when an item is $4.95 and you still say no that is just rude, especially when I said "just charge me the $5". Also as others note freshness is failing. Many items on shelves (on 2/21 when I was there) were well past "best by" date. That does not bother me so much as I think most those dates are BS anyway. But the rude man at front of store when asked about it made me simply walk out and likely never return. Prices are also very high. A simple jar of chili paste that is $1.29 in Van Nuys (99 ranch) is $5 here! I understand mark up and distance but really. To sum it up. Bad service, poor quality and high prices. Other choices abound in Goleta / SB now. No need to support such poor practices. read more

I have been coming to this market for several years now mainly to purchase tea and small snacks here and there. I am very happy with the customer service here and variety of items they offer. They have products from India, Netherlands, China, etc. It is quite a treat for the Santa Barbara area. The loose-leaf tea they have here is great - it is hard to find quality loose-leaf tea that is reasonably priced in this area. You can find this tea as soon as you enter the store, directly to your right. The reason I bumped up my review from 4 stars to 5 stars is the customer service. The owners are very friendly and I usually carry on a conversation with them when it isn't so busy. I really appreciate this in a market and my business always feels welcome no matter how small of a purchase. I will very likely continue to keep coming back. 5/5. read more

I purchased five ingredient items from this market' Curry leaves, kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, banana leaves and coconut oil. I usually purchase coconut oil from Trader Joes but since I was here and did not want to make another stop, I purchased the coconut oil at Indo-China Market. Their product is $2.00 more than Trader Joe's for almost half the product, btw. And, I have since learned that the prices at this market are marked up significantly compared to the other Asian store in Goleta. The coconut oil will not come out of the bottle. Even after soaking in warm water. I took the bottle back to June, the owner. June refused to either replace the product or return my money. He was extremely rude and dissmissive of my concern. I used to get all my ingredients from this store. I have been a customer of theirs for some time now. Because of this lack of customer service on the part of June I will never do business here again. I will go to the other Asian market on Hollister from now on. The prices at the other market are much better. And, what you can't get here you can get at Trader Joe's or Amazon. It's okay, it's good enough. You're sure to find here some Asian staples like Three Crabs fish sauce, Chaokoh coconut milk, and Mae Ploy curry pastes by the tub. Due to supply and demand, prices are higher, but cheaper than Amazon. This store is a saving grace to many students, but no one is going to say it's awesome. I usually visit to buy fresh mint, Thai chilis, basil, kefir lime leaves, or lemongrass. Some European products are also available, like frozen minced meat pies. The staff has always been laid back and usually just sitting behind the cash register or stocking shelves during my visits. They have also helped me locate products among their crowded shelves when I asked for help. I do find the small size disappointing though. I agree this is the closest thing to 99 Ranch, but it's also far from it. There is also a charge for credit card transactions under $5. read more

OK, this review is not entirely unbiased. As an Amsterdam boy, I am understandably partial to all things Dutch. And for some reason I haven't quite figured out yet, the Indo-China market in Goleta delivers just that. I can find all my Dutch childhood treats here. Speculaas, stroopwafels, drop (licorice), chocomel (chocolate milk), hagelslag, muisjes, Cassis, and more. Oh, so much more. They even have gevulde koek and ontbijt koek in the fridge somewhere. Was does all that mean? Well, not much if you were raised above sea level. But for us wayward Dutchies, the Indo-China Market is a true find. A rinky dink market, with a wide selection of odd foods. Half from southeast Asia, and the other half from England and the northern Germanic regions of Europe. Very strange -- and yet wonderful. In one fell swoop, I can now get my Indonesian fix (kroepoek, sambal, reng deng, soerendeng, etc.) AND at the same time, Dutch goodies too. At times the Wiff and I go there just to walk the aisles and stare at all the cool jars and cans. Wondering what dishes we could possible use them for. read more

Santa Barbara doesn't have much by way of asian food markets, but Indo-China gets the job done, plus more. It's run by one family, and they greet me happily anytime I or someone in my family comes round to shop. This is where I go for noodles, ginger root, all sorts of spices and canned concoctions, and of course my rice. The hidden gems of Indo-China are the Indian and European imports. Some of the items that conveniently fall into my shopping basket include: * Speculoos * Stroopwafles * Chocolade hagelslag * Milo * Smarties * Ribena * Branston pickle I've even seen Irn-Bru - "Bru'd in Scotland from girders." Freezer section is well stocked with meat pies, pasties, sausage rolls, bangers, and nice rashers of Irish bacon. Mmm, bacon butty. Fridge section is crammed with fresh noodles, miso, dumpling wrappers, and...devonshire cream. All sounds good to me, maybe not consumed at the same time. Decent selection of origami papers and asian accoutrements, like bowls and teapots and woks. Today, I noticed a new item in the window. A little stool made for sitting and shucking coconuts simultaneously. Only $12.95! read more

Huge selection of Asian foods/ingredients/spices/produce and other goodies at really cheap prices. If you need any sort of spices, check this place out before you shell out $10 bucks for a little jar of McCormick anything. I purchased a huge bag of dried/ground ginger for $3.00 (I actually wished they had something smaller) - those little jars are at least $9 at Vons. The owner was so sweet and took me around the store to help me find all of the ingredients for the dish I was making. I'm not sure what the other reviewer was talking about when he said the people working were rude, because they couldn't have been nicer or more friendly. As I am currently exploring Asian cooking at home, I know I will be back for other staple ingredients. Bonus: They also sell Salux cloths (Japanese exfoliating cloths for the shower - beats any loofah any day of the week) and the biggest box of PG tips tea I've ever seen (240 count!). There's a nice variety of goods at Indo-China, spanning most of Eurasia. They even have some frozen British hand pies and pasties, for those who have just come back from a trip abroad and are craving. Their prices suck, though. It's understandable because they're far from most of the Asian meccas in California. Paying $6.95 for a bag of 25 potstickers feels like such a rip-off to me, though. I'd go here if I started making a dish that required ingredients you can't just find at Albertsons, but forgot one single ingredient. That being said though, they do sell boba pearls and boba straws, which is perfect for if you're going to be making a large batch of boba drinks for your friends. read more

Well-stocked, conveniently located, and great service. For a student who spent four years at UCSB missing the comforts of the 99 Ranch Markets of Orange County, this place was the next best thing. Sure, it's a heck of a lot smaller than many of the Asian supermarkets in bigger cities, but 9/10 times, Indo-China had the ingredients I needed, be they Chinese, Indian or anything else. This store boasts a formidable array of everything from spices to fresh Asian produce, imported sweets to frozen treats. Even in this small store, it may seem a bit overwhelming staring at the packages of foreign goodies. Luckily, the family that runs the joint is eager to help you find what you need. In addition to being conveniently located, just a short drive or bike-ride from Isla Vista, the merchandise is also competitively priced, so there is no reason to bother visiting any of the other hole-in-the-wall Asian markets in Goleta - you'll likely end up on a wild goose chase and give up trying to cook whatever it was that got you out of the house in the first place. I may go so far as to call this place a "gem" of Goleta, considering I made about as many trips to this store as most other UCSB students made to the local smoke shops. read more

I was impressed with the selection and after talking to the owner, he assured me they could order something I didn't find. I mean they even had dried curry leaves! I'm giving Indo-China 4 stars. While there may be a good selection of Asian staples here, I felt as though I wasn't able to find as many products that I would normally use for my own cooking. Oh what a discovery !!!!! I just moved from San Diego where I'm surrounded by large variety of Asian stores and now in Santa Barbara and it's hard to find one. But this store is special, just the name was already standing out and calling me to come check me out. We were actually suppose to go to Kmart when I saw the name of this place in huge letters and I'm like monkey, I gotta see what sup here. I was in for a surprised. It was no regular Asian store but a mixture I've never really seen before. It had Thai, Vietnamese, Indians (various groups) and British ;-) I can't believe I use to have to drive two hours to grab me a small bottle of Nam pla wan dipping sauce for fruits and now it's only like 10 mins away. I have been here 3 times and still loving it and will come back for more. It's cost is a bit more than home in SD but there is competition there and still it's cheaper than all around here for sure ;-) When I have my Asian cravings and don't want to get cheated, this is the place to be and the cashier and owners were all nice and friendly so it's cool. I love this place that some time I just love to stroll inside every isle and see what they got ;-) read more

For such a small store they sure have a large variety of items. Although their asian snacks section is not that large in my opinion. They have a variety of indian/asian/european items that would be hard to find in regular grocery stores like Albertsons for example. The only down part is most of the items are really expensive and I only come here for the things I can't find anywhere else. Like a very small bowl costs around $6 I believe, and the dumplings in the frozen section cost twice as much as where I live. Also sometimes they don't like it when I carry big bags and I have to leave them at the front. read more

Friendly people, delicious food, great prices! I came here looking for instant noodles, and found a hidden gem. I used to be OBSESSED with imported British chocolates to the extent that I would order them online in a flurry of desperation... And coming here guess what I came across.... IMPORTED SWEETS!!! Aside from just Asian goods, they have a mixture of different cultural goods that I was shocked to find (in the best way possible). The workers are so friendly and helpful, the location is convenient (right by Kmart), and the products leave you wanting more! If you haven't stopped by here, do yourself a favor and check it out.
