The last time I was at Oshawa Centre, it was at least a good decade ago. This store used to be a Chapters. Instead, it is a revamped Indigo. I shouldn't stay away for that long! I was here to meet a dear friend. Our midpoint is Oshawa. I suggested that we meet here. She had a gift card to use. I just love books and gift items. The magazine section is massive. There is so much selection that I barely got through reading half the magazine titles. I love the cookbooks. I want them all! From keto to vegan, there's something for you. I still don't understand the need to wear reading socks. You can buy those here, too. My friend did manage to buy something. We waited in line a bit before she got to pay. All was well. There were plenty of Christmas items on sale. They were at least 30% off the regular price. Although it was busy on a Saturday, I can see it being a good place to unwind and read. It has a built-in Starbucks. Surprisingly, I did not go in. I will next time. Parking is crazy by this bookstore. However, it's not impossible to get a decent parking spot. The upgrade done on the store is quite spectacular, they have a great range of books, games, crafts and children's toys. It's usually hard to find staff walking around for help but usually looking up an item on their in store computers make it easy to find something on your own. I also love the selection of home decor items and how organized everything always is. read more

There is a great selection of books here, but, as is typical in Canada, so many of the books are unreasonably over-priced compared to what you can pay for them in the US and UK. I find the staff can be friendly, but sometimes overtly so. If I'm looking at the online catalogue, I don't need 4 members of staff trying to tell me how to use the system. Especially when I tell them I don't need help. Some of the longer serving staff are better at reading the customer, but a lot of the seasonal staff they get in are brutal. There are two sets of cashiers; the main desk at the interior entrance to the mall, and a smaller one near the door to the parking lot. Unfortunately, all too often this smaller cashier near the outside exit is not open, so if you pop in to quickly grab a book, you can't just go in and pay. I get a warm fuzzy feeling when I think about this Chapters. It's located in the Oshawa Centre and its one of the Flagship stores in the centre, close to the Bay. I come in here at least once a month since I have a multitude of other Chapters locations that I can frequent near me at work. But something about the size and layout of this store really appeals to me. While its big, its not so big that you feel overwhelmed trying to find that book you just looked up and can't find its section. At the mall front of the store, you'll find more paper products, like stationary, a section with baby stuff and all of their overpriced homewares, that are beautiful but... way overpriced. Then comes the games section in the middle aisle, surrounded by various kinds of books. The one thing I like about this store that I haven't really found in another store is that all the things I like all seem to be situated within a few feet of each other. They have the tables that are usually genres or categories I like, with the games, and with a whole pile of sale stuff. Just a few steps away are the cooking books. I can easily spend an hour in here. As well, we've found some hard to finds at this store. A book I wanted seemed to be sold out in the soft cover version I wanted at the stores downtown, but this location had it. The cashiers are oddly located here and the starbucks almost beckons to you as if its a cash but clearly its not. I always walk out of here with a bag of books, looking over my shoulder at the displays as my boyfriend drags me out by the hand. Overall, this is a nice Chapters to shop in. It's a good size, has great selection and the staff here are very friendly and knowledgeable. Every time I've asked where to find a book, they can almost always find it without hesitation. I enjoyed spending time in here, but only about 15 minutes. Well lit, nice, inviting displays, spacious, yet there are little corners for you to flip through a book with some privacy. A couple of issues though. Although the staff are genuine and helpful, the staff to customer ratio is low for me. I had to wait 10 minutes for someone to help me. Also, It seemed that my mobile phone would not work in Chapters. I had my buying list stored in the cloud and could not access it, so I did not buy all of the books I came for. Also, there is significant difference between the chapters.ca price and the in-store price. The one book I did remember on my list was 45% more in the store. That seems a bit high to me. It would be nice to select and buy your books online, and have them ready at the store for pickup. read more
