Good selection of curries and naan options. The staff recently changed and some of the menu options taste different now. I like the chicken korma and pasanda, and the Anari gosht is nice too. read more

We were looking for Indian food in Christchurch a very long drive and the best reviewed place…read moreseemed to be Mumbaiwala, when we entered it was a Friday evening and it was very busy! To get to the entrance, you have to park in the garage attached to the building and walk down. When we entered we were seated and given menus. The ambiance was so cool and very unique. it mimicked a train station in India, there were posters, lighting, accordingly. When I used the restroom I had to take a video- they even got the noise of a train restroom in India blasting in the restroom. When I ordered I specifically wanted mild food so I specified mild and the waitress explained it's already mild- when I heard that I knew I was in trouble because Indian food mild is spicy to me. I got the dahi puri which was spicer than my liking but flavored well. They also had some drinks and mocktails which look good but I didn't order. I marked this as a 3/5 because the customer service isn't the best, because we know Hindi I overheard a new staff waitress getting yelled at by the owner for messing up and didn't seem the most professional. Recommend for spicy Indian food! Check out the restrooms- super cool concept!
Flavour-packed, generous portions, great service!…read more Stopped in for a casual lunch and was seriously impressed. The butter chicken was rich and creamy without being overly sweet, and the naan was fresh and fluffy -- straight out of the tandoor. Service was fast, friendly, and the portions were generous for the price. Plenty of vegetarian options too, which is always a win. Will definitely be back to try more of the menu!

Friendly service, great food, good value and nice beer collection (try the Monsoon range - brewed in Christchurch). Decor is nice too. The service was great, very attentive and checked in with us during our dining. We had the chickpea vegetarian recommended dish, saag prawns, garlic naan and spicy pickles. One let down was I found the dishes not spicy enough even tho we asked for medium and I would have like more intensity in the flavour. I gave a 4 because of the whole experience and not just the meal.

So there you go. Anyway, I digress. My new flatmate said this place "was" pretty good but hasn't being their recently. So I checked it out and ordered a takeaway, 30 minutes later I had picked up and unpacked it. I ordered the Tikka Masala, my go to when trying a new Indian. First thing that struck me, was there was a LOT of chicken in the takeaway container. Bulging full of chicken. Some people would say yay, lots of chicken, but a LOT of chicken where there is more meat than sauce is not a good thing in a takeaway. It generally indicates cheap bad quality meat. As it turns out it wasn't a good thing, it was dry and the whole dish was lukewarm at best. Bear in mind I waited a few minutes in the restaurant before picking up so assumed it has just being prepared - so piping hot. The sauce itself was lack-lustre in flavour and I was left wanting. I ended up having soup and binned the takeway. Talking with some locals, it turns out that Indian Sumner used to be really good but these reports were from people who haven't being in a while. I'll give it one more go and actually eat in the restaurant and see how it is, but in this particular instance I can not recommend this place based on this one experience.

The 17.50 butter tikka masala was quite good and they made it with paneer instead of chicken by request, which I appreciated. Between the three of us, we ordered Aaloo Saag, Butter Chicken, Lamb Pasanda, and some Garlic Naan. Aaloo Saag: The spinach was bright green and not cooked down to a mush like other Indian places I've tried. Taste-wise wasn't bad, though the spinach to potato ratio was off; too many potato chunks, and not enough spinach sauce to eat with naan. Butter Chicken: VERY buttery, savory, and the chicken was nice and tender. Lamb Pasanda: The garlic, onion, ginger, and tomato sauce was pretty tasty and flavored the chunks of lamb well. Garlic Naan: Plenty of garlic, toasted on one side, light and fluffy on the other, and not too charred. The portion sizes looked like they were on the small side, but the sauces were dense so we felt plenty full on the entrees, naan, and rice (which was included with the entree). Overall, no real quibbles except for the Aaloo Saag needing more spinach. If we stayed in Christchurch longer, then I could see us coming back for another round.
