    Indian Masala - Garlic Naan

    Indian Masala

New to the area, my wife and I looked for our next go-to Indian restaurant. FOUND IT…read more The ambience is amazing. From stepping inside, you're given the allure of entering someone's home but greeted with a minimalistic, modern restaurant atmosphere. Service was A+ and the food even better! We ordered the garlic naan, chicken tikka masala (spicy) and lamb vindaloo (spicy) - all were stellar! The masala almost tasted like vodka sauce which was a first for me and I'm NOT complaining. Some of the best I've ever had, to be honest. Will be going back, for sure.

The tradeoff though is that sometimes these places just aren't very good. Indian Masala has a ton of great reviews so maybe I DID just come on an off day, but in my experience, these restaurants often get inflated positive feedback because the patrons just don't have perspective/experience to compare it to (the Hunterdon comp is Bamboo House in Frenchtown, which is very average but is literally the only sushi place must residents have ever been to). I genuinely don't know what the case is here. I stopped by for lunch yesterday with one of my top-tier chums, herself a native of the Kingdom of Sussex. She's a pretty big fan of this place and has mentioned it several times before. We both had pretty big appetites and were ready for a hearty meal. Comparatively speaking, the interior is a little on the bougie side especially for downtown Newton - high-class chairs, sleek tables, etc. I don't think there were any other customers in there when we showed up so we got our pick of the seating and I happily chose the table in the window for potential people watching outside. The highlight for me was the Gobi Manchurian app, which was fried cauliflower florets in a garlic sauce. I thought a few of the florets were overcooked/soggy but overall it was pretty decent - it tasted to me almost like healthy Chinese food, if that makes sense. If we didn't have legit entrees looming on the horizon, I would have had a lot more of that. The Chicken Tikka Masala was literally the worst I've ever had, and probably the only negative experience I've had with the dish. I'm by no means an Indian cuisine expert, but this to me is one of the more mainstream "Americanized" dishes and thus rare to mess up. The chicken was rubbery and dry and definitely wasn't helped by the accompanying curry. I got mild, but this was so mild to render it almost tasteless; it should have at least a little nip to it, but this was so rough that I chose to eat my accompanying naan bread naked without dipping it. Just a gigantic miss in my book and I'd recommend to any future customers that you opt for at least medium spice here. The service was hard to describe and ultimately a wash for me. In many ways it was technically a positive. Our waitress was very attentive but our interactions were a little awkward/odd, much of which can likely be chalked up to cultural barriers so I don't see a need to ding them for it. But as an example, any time my water glass was 80% full, she'd swoop in to fill it all the way to the top - literally the water level would hover right at the edge of the glass so I had to be careful not to spill when I took the next few sips. And once or twice she came by to fill up my chum's glass while I literally was drinking from mine, and she just stood there like a vulture until I placed the glass back on the table so she could swoop in. Especially given that my water was never close to even halfway empty, it was just too aggressive. But it came from a good place so your mileage may vary. Little odd all the way around. As much as I love to highlight restaurants in this area, this one is a pass for me. Much better options for Indian food closer to the city.

COME HUNGRY! I came here to celebrate my brother-in-law's birthday with my husband's family…read morerecently. There were 6 of us and we split the Efsane Family Special for 4 people and added lamb chops thinking we wouldn't have enough food lol the special also came with dessert but my sister-in-law also ordered a rice pudding. The 6 of us could've easily had the family special for 4 without ordering anything else - there was so much food and we had leftovers to take home!! For context, we all eat a LOT so to say we had leftovers is saying a lot! Quantity aside, the food itself was delicious. The bread is served fresh and steaming hot, the dips are delicious and flavorful, meat is seasoned and cooked perfectly (the chicken shish and lamb adana are my favorites), and the bitter black tea and sweet baklava are a perfect way to end the meal. I left there stuffed and so happy! The staff was also very friendly and attentive. I'll definitely be back!

I just moved from Montclair, which is very near the famous middle eastern food scene in Paterson,…read moreNJ. I was very worried that, after the move, I would not be able to find middle eastern food that would compare. However, I was wrong, and Esfane definitely satisfied my craving! I was in the mood for a light lunch, so I ordered the Shepard's Salad, the Baba Ghannouj, and the Lentil Soup. The Baba Ghannouj was excellent and came with lots of pita bread. It could've been a little smokier for my taste, but overall I got a huge serving and it was very creamy and flavorful. The Sheppard's salad was similarly huge and delicious. The lentil soup tasted home-made and was so comforting to dip all of my extra bread in. At the end of lunch, I was also served some complimentary tea, which definiitely was the icing on the cake to this exceptional experience. Overall, I was extremely satisfied by the quality of the food, but also by the amount. The service was similarly excellent. My water was constantly filled and the waiters checked on me numerous times to ensure everything was going well. The decorations inside were also exceptional, and the restaurant definitely gives high-class date night vibes. I could totally see coming back for a date night with my husband. I think the only downside is that I didn't find the food to be QUITE as good as some Paterson joints like Al Basha, and the price felt like it was 1.5x-2x as much. Probably worth it though, because this has got to be one of the better restaurants around in Flanders.

Flavor bomb burrata was amazing - on top of a naan, tomatoes and green garlic chimichurri with a fresh burrata and what was like a very sweet spicy honey on top - delicious. Sadly they were out of the truffle chicken masala. We opted for the butter chicken - also delicious and rich. Palak paneer - always nice to see the spinach version. Very good. Both were great with the garlic and butter naans... sopped up with the naan or rice, delicious. The 'Rarha' Lamb Chops were ok, overcooked until the bone crumbled so a bit hard to pick up, cutting it was a bit tough, and the mustard-tumeric potatoes were very good but heavy. BYOB. Menu completely online and somewhat hard to see -- bring a big phone. Street or muni lot parking. Servers were pleasant but often busy cleaning up - a bit of dropping things all night - customers knocked over their lights, dishes fell, glasses broke - I felt like it was a Jewish wedding with all the wares falling on the floor mid-way through dinner. Portions are solid and they also gave to-go bags for the leftover naan and boxes for the leftover dishes.

We stopped by Four Monkeys on a busy Friday night, and the place was packed, always a promising sign. Even with the crowd, parking wasn't an issue at all; Lot 3 is right nearby and there's plenty of street parking, which made getting in and out painless. Inside, the restaurant is on the smaller side, but they've managed to fit in a surprising number of tables without making it feel cramped. The lighting is dim and moody in a way that works well for the space, and the subtle monkey-themed decor is genuinely charming- playful but tasteful. Menus are all via QR code, and even the cutlery feels upgraded and fancy, adding a nice touch. Service was a highlight. The staff is friendly, helpful, and refreshingly honest as they guided us through the menu, prevented us from over-ordering, and offered thoughtful recommendations. For water, they give you options: tap, sparkling, or still. What we ordered: * Pili Mirch Paneer Tikka (appetizer) * Bandar Butter Chicken * Homestyle Bhuna Chicken * Garlic Naan (pro tip: the naans are huge, one is easily enough for two people) The paneer app was really solid, think paneer tikka with a definite kick, paired with some tasty dipping sauce, chutney, and even grilled pineapple. A fun combo and definitely one of the stronger dishes. The mains, though, both the butter chicken and homestyle bhuna chicken, leaned very much on the milder side. The sauces were more liquidy than expected, and they felt geared toward diners who prefer Indian food without the heat. With slightly less gravy and a bit more spice, both dishes could've been standouts. The garlic naan was fine, though more firm than the soft, melt-in-your-mouth style I usually prefer. Overall, I'd say Four Monkeys is a good try and a nice addition to Summit, but probably not my go-to Indian spot for the food alone. That said, the ambiance is great, the staff is wonderful, and it's worth a visit, especially if you're into milder Indian flavors or want a cozy, lively night out.
