(All of which was pretty expensive) we use the restroom and when I get out I wanted to take a photo of a piece of their turquoise Jewelry to show my mom since she loves turquoise. I then get yelled at by the woman behind the counter saying "no photos!" I never saw any signs saying no photos and in my mind couldn't photos and posting only help their business? Either way after spending the high prices for their merchandise and then being treated like crap over taking a photo I won't be stopping by again. read more

Was a very unique place. Employees treated me with mercy and spared my life despite the fact that I was a trespasser on their property. They kindly allowed me to relieve myself in the restaurant, they also allowed me to purchase a delicious taco and a yummy drink. Though the ice kept clogging up in the drink machine, the employee helped me to unclog it which was an unnecessary but very touching act of kindness. Some really gorgeous jewelry pieces here! Definitely worth a stop if you like silver turquoise pieces that shine in the light. You'll find the shopping experience to be spacious-- not like a lot of tiny, cramped kitschy gift shops you find elsewhere. We stopped mostly because we needed a restroom but also we enjoy shopping for fun souvenirs. It would've been nice if they'd had a larger selection of items to choose from, but you can expect things like t-shirts, hats, keychains, magnets, postcards, and handmade items like rugs, sculptures, wood carvings, figurines, and sand paintings. The employees were friendly and left us to browse at our leisure. Restrooms were clean as advertised by the many billboards leading to the exit. Unfortunately the food location inside was closed when we went, otherwise we might've gotten a soft serve ice cream. read more

Definitely not a tourist trap! On the Allentown exit from I-40, this small complex of stores is a great rest stop. It is also a great shopping stop. It also has a great little taco shop within. No way to lose here. One will find virtually every kind and type of Indian merchandise in the Navaho and Hopi Indian store, where I took my pictures. Prices on merchandise are reasonable, and hooboy, the 99 cent tacos are really delicious. I understand why there is a limit of three per customer. Other menu items are probably equally as good. There is even a small book rack featuring, of course, Tony Hillerman. The restrooms were quite clean. In the future, I would certainly plan on stopping here again. read more

Sparkling bathrooms, not even. Friendly staff, nope, not even that. My husband ordered tacos inside, and he said even after turning on the charm, the staff was still incredibly rude. You will also find small dream catchers and Kachina statues. You are not bothered by sales people. Outside to the left is another food area and to the right stands a teepee. The crunchy tacos were delicious. They are 99 cent each with a limit of 3 tacos per paying customer. They provide tapatio hot sauce with the taco. I loved the crunchy tacos! They have 99 cent ice cream cones and other food selections including snacks. The restrooms are clean. I totally recommend for travelers to stop to use the restrooms and buy food and/or snacks. They have small souvenirs and native jewelry. Please if you stop to use the restroom, please at least purchase a beverage ,crunchy taco, or ice cream cone. Man, I am SO glad I stopped here! I've been an avid crystal and mineral collector for over a decade, and was pleasantly surprised by the quality, selection and prices of everything in the store. Granted, I only looked at the rocks and not much else, but what I did see looked nice and not at all like the usual cheap junk/knock offs you get at a lot of places these days. The customer service was also spectacular - the 3 women I spoke with were super polite and helpful. Would have happily paid double for the things I bought, and will definitely be stopping by next time I'm in town. read more

Cool little rest stop right past the Arizona and New Mexico border line. Worth walking around and checking out. They had a couple cheaper Route 66 t shirt that the wife purchased because she has to so end money everywhere we go. The Indian artifacts were silly expensive. There was a cool chintzy looking Indian artifact that my oldest was like "dad can I have this?" In my mind I was like "were on a cross country roadside trip it's ok to splurge on cheap things. It will probably cost $15-$20". I walked over there and it was $180!!! Like this thing looks like it was made from popsicle sticks! I for sure remember stopping here because there were like 20 billboards advertising dollar ice cream cones and dollar tacos! (that's the trick to getting me to stop somewhere *hint I love food*). Kinda hard to miss this place because they advertise for it miles away with 20 billboards. They have easy access to and from the Interstate and have plenty of parking. I stopped to use the bathrooms and they were nice but it could be better. It was not busy when I stopped by so no line for bathrooms yay. I then proceeded to buy some tacos but I found out they limit you to 3 tacos per person (sad face). It turned out ok because they were not the best but still edible. I did not get ice cream because I make a mess with ice cream. The lady that took my taco order did not seem ~energetic~ when I order my food. It looked like she was ready to hit the bed for a looong nap. There are tables inside for people to sit and eat and the store seems cool with people bringing outside food and drink and using their tables for that. There was a family with a baby next to me enjoying some Chinese food when I was there (wonder where they got Chinese food out here). The store itself was very organized and well laid out. Inside they had the typical souvenirs, keychains, mugs, spoons, etc. What I really liked about this store was the large selection of handmade jewelry and pottery available for purchase. Along with those there were many dolls and figurines handmade by natives for sell. I ended up buying two blankets because I get cold just driving in the car (made in Mexico) for $10 total. ($5 each limit 2 per customer). There is a second floor in this store but it seems to be big pieces of art and paintings. The staff was nice, nothing extraordinary about it. When I visited it was slow and only about a handful of customers were there. I really liked looking at all the neat handmade things they had in ther but I think I would stop here again if I pass by again. read more

The rest area was closed and we were redirected here. On the highway they advertised restrooms. We were denied their restroom for two porti ponies that have not been serviced and smelled aweful. Gag. I would have gladly purchased from their store however I was very soured by the poor service my child could not use the restroom due to stench and unclean standards. I would not come back. I am a displaced New Mexican (Residing in Oklahoma) and a lover of Native American culture and art. I recently moved my daughter to California, (lets not get into that) but as I was driving along I40 I was making mental notes as to places I would like to stop on the return trip to pick up some Zuni pottery. I dont avoid touristy spost as they have their place and also make for good spots to have a bathroom break and grab some food. I had never been to Indian City, and although the name was kind of a put off I marked it down to visit on the returns trip. After driving for 9 hours, i was coming up on the New Mexican boarder at about quarter after 5PM. I was excited to pull into the trading post, but noticed as I walked in the door they closed at 5:30. The good news is there was about 15 customers milling around in the store so I thought I would have a few min to go to the restroom and take a look at the Acoma pottery they had displayed in the back and pick one out before they shut down. The pottery was way over priced, but as per usual in these types of places there was a sign that the pottery was 50% off. As I looked over the pottery tried to narrow down a selection the lady in the center of the store announced that they were closing now. I so I kicked my search into high gear, but then she said, we are closed. I looked around at the 12-15 or so customers that were putting down the items they were looking at and filing out of the store. I followed suit. IDK if the person was a store owner or employee. She was not rude or loud. She just made it very clear that she didn't want a sale or care or came back. Which to her credit, she nailed, because I did and wont do either. To be honest, I get it, I have no idea what her day was like, and she may have had stuff going on, I just dont know. I guess it just surprised me that the business had spent so much money on billboards to pull me in off the highway, but instead of ROI for those adverts they pushed me out the door to close right on the button of 5:30. read more

I had seen signs going into Flagstaff about Indian City. Going home, I decided I wanted a $7.99 Indian blanket. I found the store thanks to a cluster eff of bill boards. I counted 9. I think going west on 40, there's 15. I went in, and was promptly greeted. I found the discounted pottery wrack (40% off), and bought a small piece of pottery. Then I found the Indian blankets for $7.99. I bought both, and the clerk added several pieces of petrified wood to my bag. Arizona loves their petrified wood. I found the prices to be pretty normal. I enjoyed looking at the crystals and fossils. He asked me, "Where are you headed?" I said, "Kansas City." It's a pretty cool shop. Worth the stop. read more

Decided to go in and get a bite to eat. The lady wasn't very friendly.....Well she didn't crack a smile at all while she took our order. We ordered a burrito supreme. It was 80% beans! I was thinking ok, maybe the meat is on the bottom, nooooooooooooooo, I'm not even sure if there was any meat in this burrito! Get a taco instead! That way you can at least see the meat. Please do not waste your time going into this place for souvenirs or jewelry. Following all the homemade signs on Highway 40, I stopped in to look for jewelry. I was skeptical because of all the signs. They only had maybe two dozen rings. The 50% off jewelry sign made me laugh. I'm sure this is the regular price after looking at rings and earrings. I bought $500 worth of jewelry and haggled for a better price which I received. 50% off my arse. The women clerks spoke Navajo (I asked) so I assume the store sells authentic wares. The clerks were not friendly at all. I plan to visit other stores on Highway 40 on my trip back to Denver from Arizona who I hope are happier to get my business. Good-looking trinkets. For being in the middle of the desert & not near many other attractions, this store has some nice looking pieces. I thought the prices were a bit more than I, personally, would be willing to spend randomly while driving through the desert. I did shell out a couple bucks in the "fill your bag" bins for minerals. You can pick the size bag/pouch you want and then fill it with all the pretty minerals and stones that you want! I picked up some nice looking quartz pieces. Not too shabby. read more

They accused my 13-year old son (straight A honor student, captain of his middle school cross country team) of using a back scratcher under his shirt and then insisted we pay for it because they couldn't resell it. We were passing through enroute to flagstaff and figured we'd stop because my mother really appreciates native american silver and hand made goods. Parking (wth an RV in tow mind you) was a bit more difficult than expected but doable. Their restrooms, like the signs say are extremely clean. The staff is inviting and tell interesting stories about their heritage when asked. I definitely learned a lot and purchased some nice earrings for my wife.
