The…read moremarker is part of the Historical Marker Program, one of the Division of Historical Resources' most popular and valued public history programs. The markers raise awareness of Florida's cultural history while enhancing the enjoyment of historic sites for residents and tourists. The blue historic markers tell the stories of the people and places that were important to Florida's history and they can be found in front of schools, forts, roads, battlefields, cemeteries, churches, historic districts, archaeological sites, and buildings like this one. Historic marker F-640 was installed in 2008 by the Brevard County Historical Commission The Brevard County Tourist Development Council and the Florida Department of State. This building was built in 1908 in what is now Ryckman Park. It faced the Indian River Lagoon and held offices of the Melbourne Beach Improvement Company where Capt. Rufus Beaujean, Donald Beaujean, and Lawrence Ryckman planed the pier, lot sites, roads, and a railway. Eventually, the building became the Melbourne Beach Town Hall and Post Office. In 1953, a new town hall was built. This building was floated down the Indian River to this area. It became the Williams Building when it was used for meetings and classes and managed by Mr. and Mrs. Williams. When the Spessard Holland Golf Course was built, the building was moved to the point of land between Oak Street and Highway A1A where it continued to be a community center. In 2001, the building was scheduled for demolition. Two citizens stepped forward to save it and the community rallied behind them. In May 2007 the building opened as a history center. The museum is free and open on Saturdays. It has displays about history of the area, Ais Indians, Spanish shipwrecks, and the development of Melbourne Beach.

The Melbourne Beach Pier is steeped in history. Located in Ryckman Park, the pier was built between…read more1888 and 1889 by the Indian River and Atlantic Railway Company. It was constructed from wood planks and pilings as was common in the late 1800's. The pier is the oldest known example of such piers on the Indian River. After the pier was built it served as a crucial transportation link moving tourists, residents, freight, and mail between the mainland and the barrier island. A railroad was laid from the ferry landing on the dock and across the barrier island 7/10 of a mile to the ocean beach. This provided access to the Atlantic Ocean by a pushcart and later by a motorized car. A ferry service was operated by the Beaujean family between 1889 and 1923. The railroad provided access to the island and excursion boats from the mainland communities brought winter tourists to dock at the pier. The community's first post office was located at the east end of the pier and provided the daily mail service in 1894. The building of the toll bridge between Melbourne and Indialantic in 1921 ended the pier's importance for island access. On April 12, 1984, the pier was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. In 1985 a restoration project supported by local citizens and state programs helped to preserve this iconic Melbourne Beach structure. Today the pier offers a panoramic view of the Indian River and is ideal for fishing, relaxation, and sunset strolls. I enjoyed my walk back in time down this historic pier, and best of all unlike many piers there is no charge to enjoy it.

Parking is free all around until 8:00 AM, but plenty of spaces and pay stations where you can pay with card. If you're taking a kid or anyone fishing for the first time and you want to GUARANTEE a bite, go to Black Dog Bait and Tackle like 5 minutes away, get one or two dozen live shrimp with a bubbler bucket and cast off any corner of this pier. I will say that the only thing that bit was catfish NONSTOP. They put up a fun fight and they come in all sizes and they rarely swallow the hook, but once you catch a couple, I suggest going to the beach or finishing up your bait at Geiger Point at Kiwani's Park. You'll have a better shot of catching some little snappers and drums (which you can't keep any size in this area). Super beautiful spot though for a kid's first time out.

Karen's Kayaks My only disappointment about Karen's Kayaks…read moreis that I didn't find it sooner. We've been visiting Satellite Beach for more than a decade and I never thought to look up Kayak tours until recently. We had a great time with Karen. We choose the Crane Creek tour leaving from historic downtown Melbourne. It ended up being a manatee/dolphin/alligator watching tour that was worth double or triple what we paid ($40/adults and $25/children). This wasn't a private tour, but Karen took care to make sure I was able to keep up since I am a newbie at kayaking and I was doing it with my daughter in the kayak with me. Karen is very knowledgable about the area, great at teaching kayaking skills without making her unskilled guests feel foolish and good at working with all experience levels. We enjoyed our day with her and were sorry when it was over. I can't wait to go back.

I can't recommend her highly enough. I was here on business and had limited schedule flexibility but she readily agreed to a custom evening paddle for me and 3 companions who had never kayaked before. She planned out a route that would be appropriate for their skill level and still have a chance to see as much local wildlife as possible. When 2 of my group backed out after testing out the boats and deciding that kayaking wasn't for them and the 3rd opted to wait, Karen was generous enough to still take me out on my own. She knew the details of the local flora and fauna and every segment along of the route where manatee, alligators, and other wildlife often could be found. She's incredibly personable and very patient and clearly so respectful of the river and surrounding environment. We stayed out for over 2 hours but she will tailor the length of the outing to whatever is right for the group she's dealing with. Her equipment is in excellent condition and well maintained, and the whole experience is feels totally professional, safe, and best of all, loads of fun. Definitely check out her trips if you're looking for a great paddling experience no matter your skill level.
