"Buffet" is one of my favorite words, and the phrase "Indian Buffet" is sure to get the thin line of drool trickling down the corner of my mouth. When coworkers suggested India Palace on a recent business sojourn to Duluth, I gave it a "hellz ya", but the interior is dingy. The food on the buffet VERY bland. Granted, there was nothing disgusting on the buffet, and I can't speak to their menu, but it seems to me a restaurant's buffet is an opportunity to show off some of the menu's crown jewels, in hopes of luring lunchers back for romantic dinners and higher margin meals. I think India Palace keeps its crown jewels in the walk-in freezer behind the industrial-size bag of chicken tikka masala. The best thing was the chapati. read more

Well, it's Indian food in Duluth so what do you expect? This place has always been very mediocre in terms of worthy Indian cuisine. If you've never had "Indian Food", give it a shot, maybe try the lunch buffet. If you're craving Tikka Masala, Kofta, Tandoori Chicken, Naan, or those odd little sweet milk ball sponges, it's probably worth a visit 2x per year. Other than that, it's overpriced and underflavored. Had the app sampler yesterday; it was terrible and a waste of $8. The chai tea was spot-on. The kofta was decent, but the chicken is always too tough and the portions are too small. Plenty of white rice though...yee hah! The naan is certainly below average also. $44 before tip? First off, India Palace isn't even run by Indian folks. Hmong folks run the place. The way Indians make their rice, is a little firm, the rice we had with our curry was good & cooked perfectly, but not the Indian way. The curry was good, but not at the spice level we wanted, it was not even spicy. I guess they wanna appeal to the majority-Caucasians who aren't used to Asian spice. My partner's coworkers told him that he needed to try this Indian buffet out. He's obsessed with Indian food so it basically meant that it was a guarantee we'd go. I was skeptical, however, of an Indian restaurant in Duluth. The city doesn't really scream Indian food. But I love buffets and I wanted to try it nonetheless. My first impression was that it was a lot smaller than I was expecting. I've been to several Indian buffets in Chicago and all of them are relatively big compared to this one. It wasn't bad though. It made the place feel a little cozier and welcoming. The buffet itself looked clean and well stocked. I didn't see any food items out of stock while I was there. So that's definitely a plus since unkempt buffets are a put off. At first glance the food seemed a little lackluster. There wasn't a whole lot of variety, but I didn't let that deter me from going at it. Surprisingly the dish I usually like the most (chicken tikka masala) was my least favorite of them all. It just wasn't creamy. I love the creamy tomato taste of chicken tikka masala but this one was lacking the cream. It was nice chunks of chicken at least. I'm not going to bother attempting to mess up the names of the curries so I'll just describe them. My favorite dish was the spinach with paneer. I typically love spinach dishes like that so that was a given. They had little fried potato patties, which while simple was pretty tasty when you dipped it in the curry sauces. There were two yellow curries, one all vegetable and the other with what seemed like a veggie patty in it. I enjoyed both of them, and the lentil curry was tasty as well. Even though some people complained about it in their reviews, I enjoyed the meatballs. They tasted like those party meatballs people marinade in bbq sauce, but with tomato sauce instead. I know they were probably cheap meatballs, but hey, I liked them. The waitress was attentive and constantly filled my water when I needed it. The price was very reasonable and I would argue cheap. I really did enjoy this buffet and was glad that it was recommended. While it might not compare to Chicago Indian buffets, that's ok because it was still tasty. India Palace is one of the best places to eat downtown. It's not an overly fancy place, but the food and service are both great. The dining room isn't super large, so at peak times it can feel a little bit crowded, but I have NEVER had to wait to be seated. The lunch buffet is the best value for your money, but the food served isn't super varied. It would be nice if the line had different options more often to keep it fresh. That being said, the buffet is delicious, kept warm, and is replenished often. The dinner menu is extensive and you can order your food to your preferred spice level. As a vegetarian I have no problem finding something to eat here, but I can also bring my meat eating family. If you're into Indian food, or are curious about trying it out I highly suggest you give India Palace a try! read more

So I've been getting takeout for years from India Palace, and last night I ordered my usual except I noticed they've switched the rice containers to the ones used at Chinese restaurants. I asked for more rice and was told it would be more money which I did not do since my bill was almost $40. When I got home, I opened the rice container and it was 3/4 full and loosely packed, so now today I will have to make rice for my leftovers. I guess I'll save my Indian cravings for Minneapolis where they aren't so stingy with rice and overpriced. Done with you India Palace. read more

Considering this is the only Indian place in duluth, and the pretty bad (albeit outdated & mostly about the buffet) reviews here, I was pleasantly surprised. The menu is typical northern Indian fare. We're mostly vegetarian - had baingan bharta (smokey, creamy given that there's no cream- quite good), dal (oddily orange but also good), and the channa masala (pretty good, my husband & 2 yo's favorite), plus onion naan. Came w basmati. I think everyone else was having the lunch buffet- which had a few veggie options (veg korma, saag paneer, tofu jhalfrezi). Price was a bit but since there isn't a lunch menu given the buffet, it seemed typical for duluth ethnic restaurants.... Ordered medium spice (waiter seemed surprised)- it was pretty mild for Indian medium but definitely had a little (little) kick. Probably about my 2 yo's threshold. We'll be back. read more

I have no idea what these other people are talking about. This place is terrible. I went for the lunch buffet and tried every dish available. They were all either bad or kinda bad. They had one dish that seemed to be those simek's meatballs you buy frozen at the grocery store. They were in, what seemed to be a can of tomato sauce with garam masala added. Also everything seemed really sweet. The chicken makhani was the least bad thing. It also was bland and sweet but not as much so as the other dishes. Okay, India Palace still gets four stars because the food is great, and we are in a solid, long-term relationship that can withstand any hurdles life might throw in our way. However, read on for APPALLING behavior on the part of its customers! I went here with my mommy last night. We got aloo gobi and.....baignan bartha? We got naan (my mom is doing dairy-free right now, they were cool and made her some naan without butter) which was so deliciously chewy and fluffy....the stuff on the lunch buffet tends to get kind of crispy and tough after a while. And I feel like they read my last review, because I ordered medium spicy and it was back to being nice and hot! It was actually really busy for a Tuesday night! (But maybe people were just out for a last bit of civilization before today's blizzard?) There was a table right next to us with a two year old, and her grandfather fed her using the "airplane" method for literally a solid half hour....REALLY LOUDLY. I get it, kids can be picky, but....please ease up on the throttle? Your airplane fly-by's are ruining my dinner. I usually love to watch cute kids in restaurants, even if they're making some occasional noise, but....I don't like to have a man buzzing his lips nonstop, as loud as possible, three feet away from me. The thing that blew my mind was that this family of four came in, the mother sat on one side of the table, and the dad and kids (about 12 and 13 years old) sat on the other, and he opened up his laptop and they STARTED WATCHING A MOVIE WITH THE SOUND ON IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RESTAURANT. What. The. Flying. Frig? This is not Starbucks. This is a restaurant. The cook came out and started making hand gestures at the guy, I guess trying to let him know he should close his laptop, and the guy just smiled back at him and started making hand gestures back at him....like it was a joke? And he didn't close his laptop. I was just getting up to leave, so I went and said something to him very politely, and he....just didn't say a word. He just kept the same smile on his face and looked down at his hands. I feel sorry for his family. I hope his kids don't take lessons from him. The waiter stood by during all of this and didn't do anything. I couldn't believe it. I mean, I know everyone's Minnesota nice and they don't want to say anything to him, but COME ON. Extremely unprofessional service. They used FoodDudes for delivery, who are awesome, but I guess now they went cheap and use BiteSquad, which is simply terrible. They accept orders and keep increasing the delivery time in 20-30 minute increments. The person on the phone at the restaurant doesn't understand English very well, and perhaps thats the issue. Table service was fair minus the many attempts made to ask if we were finished with our meals which made it feel like you were rushed to leave.The food was decent not too spicy which was shocking for an Indian restaurant however, spices in the food could have been a little more spread out because one part of your dish had no spice while the other side was over spiced. Not the best Indian cuisine restaurant I have ever experienced but nothing that put red flags up saying to stay away. Duluth's hidden gem! The food is so authentic! You can smell the spices as you walk in the door. I ordered the lamb curry with garlic naan bread along with Indian chai tea, which I'm now obsessed with! One thing I must say is that their levels of spiciness are way off. I read previous reviews and had to write my own. They are not realistic. No I don't have ANY relatioinship to ownership. Don't even know who they are. Our family is huge fans of Indian Food. This started when we lived in Great Britain about 15 years ago. Atmoshphere gets a d+ but we're all about the food quality. The food at India Palace is fabulous when you find your dishes. I like my Bangin Baratha creamy but they leave the onions a bit crunchy. Personal taste but I sure don't fault them for that and I still order it regularly. All the other dishes I have there are some of the best I've had. If the portions are too small for you, you have portion distortion. My wife and I will share a meal or save a portion for lunch. No way this is too small for a single person. The other issue is Buffet. If you want to feed, have the buffet. If you want to eat/dine order off the menu to your taste. Just tried this last week with some friends. It was so delicious, I dragged my wife and kids there two days later! Wow. I am from India, but now in Minneapolis, MN for last 10 years. I do not go out to Indian restraunts because 1) I know that they put baking soda ot make gravy thick and heavy 2) Quality of raw material used and cleaniness of kitchen is highly questionable (I know this bacause wife is in Public Health closely working with food inspectors). However, on a weekend visit to Duluth, couple of friends wanted to eat indian food so we went to this place. For starters, we ordered Chicken Pakora. What we got was horrible. It seems Chef had no idea what chicken pakora is. This is what he had done: a) Got frozen boneless chicken b) dip it in gram flour paste c) fry it and keep it out to cool off d) microwave and serve when ordered. There was no marination of chicken, no salt/spice/flavor in gram flour paste and microwave did not heat is properly as chiceck inside was cold. Stupid food. When I asked what it is as there is no flavor and spice, manager was very rude. He was like that is how we make it. My response was then you should close the restraunt because you don't know how to make it and have no idea about flavors. I expected that he would politely say that sorry you didn't like, but there are other items which I can recommend you based on the kind of indian flavors you are looking for. We were a group of 10 and immediately left leaving untouched starters on the table. It is better to be hungry than eat this kind of food. I live in North Central MN and have lived all around the country. As restaurant Indian food goes, it is on par with most places I have eaten; except the restaurants in the East Village; hard to beat them! The food is spicy enough for most Minnesotans, though next time I am going to ask if they can bump it up a notch. We ordered off the menu since the buffet was pretty bare when we got there just about the time they were closing it down. Not to bad for Northern MN., I have had better; but this is pretty good for this part of the world. I will definitely go back again. For a lunch buffet, this place is pretty good. I have now been here a few times (including today) and we have always been greeted promptly, had efficient service (water/utensils brought right away, the bill was given to us and taken care of quickly, and the water is refilled often) and there is always fresh food in the buffet. The food itself is average. Nothing is particularly great, but it is all good enough and it is consistent. If you are in need of an Indian fix in Duluth, this will certainly do the trick.
