In print and online, Indy Week is the free weekly newspaper for the Triangle area. Formerly the Independent Weekly but no more since 2012, it's a tabloid-format newspaper for Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and Cary. Available for pickup at more than 500 locations in the Raleigh Durham area, the circulation runs at around 200,000 according to the website. News, arts, music, food, events, this paper is plugged in to what's happening locally. I can't recall where I found my copy but I did manage to enjoy it. Interesting news about the area, specifically the "death-positivity movement" was an amusing read. And they have a crossword. That's awesome. The Independent is about halfway between the News & Observer and the Carrboro Citizen in terms of tone... They're independent, sure, but that doesn't mean everything they report on involves hemp. I like the Independent because it's thoroughly useful. There really isn't a page in the thing that doesn't have some sort of relevant report on what's going on around me, particularly in regards to concerts and other entertainment. Any time I've said in another review to keep your eye on something, this is a good tool for doing just that, they're extremely well connected. The one exception to this are their reviews, which I often take issue with... Unless you have strong past experience to go on, don't trust their opinions on movies and shows, chances are you'll disagree. read more

The Independent is Raleigh's best independent newspaper, and really Raleigh's only independent newspaper that actually prints news. Wiling to go the extra mile a little past the local news guys sometimes the independent covers everything from politics to music like no other news organization in town. Each political election the independent goes through and endorses particular candidates. Their enforcements are the only ones I read on local politics. I feel like unlike some other publications around they really are unbiased in who they pick (although they definitely lean liberally). They also do a "Best of the Triangle" contest every year where they take votes from readers on everything from the best place to buy coffee to the best bartender. They also print music calendars for every venue around town every week as well as make "best et" picks for each day if you're looking for something to do. read more

I love the Indy. It's my tool for keeping in tune with what's happening locally week-to-week, in terms of politics, special events, and arts and entertainment. They have newstands everywhere, so you can pick up a free copy at any of the hip joints you already hang out at. Their calendar is exhaustive, but you can also bank on their 'this week' feature which selects best bets for each evening. Keep an eye out for their special issues -- The Best of the Triangle (where in user votes have been tallied to elect the top businesses, everything from restaurants to parks to tattoo parlors, in our local scene) and Dish (which breaks down food places by cuisine and gives brief blurbs). They are both excellent ways to acquaint yourself with some new spots. read more
