    Royal Mile, Old Town

This little pharmacy seemed fine enough to me when I stopped by today to pick up a prescription. I…read morelike that it's so handy that they pick up prescriptions right from my doctor so all I have to do is submit the prescription refill request and then show up here a few days later to pick it up. They cover all the basic pharmacy items and, although not overwhelmingly friendly, we're courteous enough. Because of the Royal Mile location and because I would think they are an independent pharmacy, their prices were quite a bit higher than the Boots around the corner. Their package of 16 paracetamol was £0.55 here, whereas Boots' were only £0.16. That said, it is convenient and handy if you need to stop in here, and it didn't seem unsafe at all to me despite what the other reviewer said.

Underneath the typically old fashioned and tourist-friendly exterior, The Royal Mile Pharmacy hides…read morea dark secret. On a recent visit when I nipped in for a pack of chewing gum, the various foul smelling, painfully thin and toothless characters waiting at the counter told me what that dark secret was. Despite the pleasant exterior, the lather large amount of skagheads that visit this pharmacy for their weekly methodone hit makes it a virtual no-go area at certain times of the day. I've worked on The Royal Mile for about six or seven weeks now, and have already seen two rather sizeable, drink and drug fuelled brawls outside. It really is quite astounding that the powers that be send the junkies here, to the city's main tourist thoroughfare, for their pick-me-up. Given that heroin addicts aren't known for their early morning "rise and shine" attitudes, as long as you get here before 1pm you'll be alright, and will find a quite lovely little outlet for all your pharmaceutical needs.

This took me by surprise! Now anyone who knows me knows that I like top end places, especially…read morewith my lotions and potions. Now I am also a strict vegetarian, so have been trying to only use products that are not tested on animals or have any non veggie ingredients and that the companies producing them are members of PETA (People for the ethical treatment of animals. Now that is a big ask and amazingly Superdrug are on this list. I have been in a few times and I am now using their face wash daily £3.49 a bottle compared with my previous £27 a bottle more expensive brand. Now I am aware that it doesn't have the plush surroundings or snazzy addresses of its counterparts, I am pleasantly surprised and I have even joined up to their points card. Well done Superdrug on your good ethics!

It might be worth walking the extra 10/15 minutes to the giant Superdrug on Princes Street, but…read morethis shop carries most of the basics. I'm a creature of simple tastes when it comes to my beauty regime and so far this place has ever let me down. I'm not going to up my rating though because, maybe I'm just spoiled, but where's all the deals?! I work on a limited budget (also I'm a miser...) so I rejoice in deals but this small shop rarely has any, apart from emery boards at the till the odd time. There's also not a huge range when it comes to newer big name brands, you'll get your Nivea and Clearasil but don't expect any of the newer brands that can be found in the bigger shops. They seem to have a particular client base, who like the essentials and they're sticking with it! So, besides me being annoyed I have to pay full price for things, the staff are nice and always helpful. It's an alright place that will likely have what you need, but don't be surprised if they don't!
