This small plaza directly in front of the Hofburg houses an enormous monument to Emporer Franz I that has been there since 1846. Upon erection of the monument, the plaza was christened Franzensplatz in his honor. The name, given by Franz's son Ferdinand I, was changed to Innerer Burghof when the monarchy ended.
The plaza is a popular place to wait for various tours around the complex to start, and provides ample shade at the right time of day.
If you're going to tour the Burghof, you will definitely pass through this courtyard, so stop and take a look around; it's pretty neat.
