I was transported to Hospital Costamed after suffering a seizure while snorkeling in Akumal. I woke…read moreup in the ER, confused and in a lot of pain and wanting to be released so I could get back to take care of my young kids (who were back at Club Med thanks to the amazing tour guide who helped save our family!). Despite my very poor ability to speak English, my caretakers were wonderful and did their best to communicate with me. One of the hospital heads came to speak with me and explained that I had been through a lot of trauma and needed to be kept overnight. A neurologist also came to speak with me at one point to discuss what had happened, the results of the brain scans they conducted, etc. In hindsight, they absolutely should have kept me even though I was literally in tears and telling them I needed to be discharged. At one point...I think it was around 10pm and I'd been there for about 12 hours but only the last couple of which I'd been fully awake/aware...a kind young man from the nurse's station brought me what appeared to be his cell phone and allowed me to use it to call Club Med so I could speak with my husband and children. The ability to hear my family's voices was the best medicine in the world at that point in time. It still makes me tear up thinking about it. This was the second seizure I've had...we thought the first one was a freak incident and I wasn't going to keep having them...tough lesson learned. But having recovered from the second seizure, I am so thankful to the medical professionals that saved me. I had inhaled and swallowed seawater, as the seizure came on while I was snorkeling. By the time I arrived at the hospital, I was unconscious, a "code red" ambulance transport, and things could have gone very badly for me. The staff here literally saved my life and they showed kindness and compassion as they did so. I am eternally grateful to the hospital staff at Costamed!! Also....our US-based insurance worked in Mexico. If you are traveling to a foreign country and don't know if you'll have health insurance coverage, I highly recommend calling your insurance company to confirm! Thank you y Gracias, Costamed!!!!! My family and I can't say thank you enough.

Complete scam, do not go here if at all possible. They ran my credit card for $8000 for one night…read morewhile I was concussed. Completely criminal.

If you are an American citizen and vacationing without travelers insurance STAY AWAY FROM THIS…read moreHOSPITAL , they will suck your last penny . 4 years ago we were in playa del Carmen and my son cut his finger splitting a Lemon, we rushed to Amerimed for treatment , he got admitted but before he's treated they ask you to for a guarantee money in my case was $2000 After they applied 4 stitches in my son finger my bill was $2000 dollars I ask why so much and they said because he is American if he was Mexican the bill would have been around $800 dollars . Yesterday my wife had a stomach infection she was admitted and treated , I was terrified as to how much I was gonna pay this time , well they came and ask for $5000.00 pesos guaranteed. Why in pesos you may ask ? Well because my wife is Mexican and she had a Mexican passport . So what a difference our bill was only $219 dollars - I won't say they are bad practice they really have good doctors and good service , but for a foreigner it will cost you.

I experienced severe food poisoning at Xcaret Arte after eating red chicken enchiladas with a salad…read moreat their Mercado restaurant. Shortly after, I became extremely ill and was taken to the Xcaret clinic, where I was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. The clinic and ambulance appeared to have some sort of arrangement with Hospital Amerimed, which charged an outrageous $3,459.50 USD in less than an hour--and they wanted even more. My suspicions grew when the doctor at Amerimed seemed more focused on defending the hotel than my condition, claiming I had hepatitis and insisting it couldn't have been caused by the hotel's food, as hepatitis takes weeks to manifest. Ultimately, I was transferred to Hospital Azura in Cancún, where it was confirmed that my acute pancreatitis was induced by food poisoning. My lipase and amylase levels were extremely elevated. The negative reviews about this place are accurate--stay away.

These people killed my father. There is no reason he should…read morehave died. The nurse staff is completely untrained and ill-equipped to treat patients. They did not know how to respond to a patient in cardiac arrest and, as a result, I watched my father die before my very eyes. My untrained eye could see he was arresting, but the nurses screwed around complaining that he was too big for them to move for 7 minutes before calling an emergency (because I started screaming for help). They waited another 4 before beginning one-handed compressions on a 230 pound patient. My dad never had a chance. He was admitted for hyponatremia and left two nights later in a body bag. I'm pursuing legal representation, but attorneys are disinterested in the case because of cartels' involvement in the private hospital system. Bottom line, if you want to live...try ANY other hospital. This incident was beyond tragic and 100% avoidable. For the $30K USD we paid, Hospiten could afford to buy wall-mounted AED machines for each room on the floor. Instead, they rolled a huge box machine into my dad's room 20 minutes into his heart attack. When I went up to collect his things 3 hours after they evacuated him to the ER, the remnants and mess were still all over the place. I had to collect his hearing aids from feces on the bathroom floor and the nurses who were literally responsible for his death watched me drag all of his belongings down the hall in a pillowcase as I wept. This is sub-human care. I wouldn't trust these people to take care of animals much less humans.

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS--THEY ARE SCAMMERS AND INCOMPETENT!…read more If I could give this place negative stars, I would. Hospiten Riviera Maya is an absolute disgrace to medical care. They made me wait over 4 HOURS in pain while they sat around doing nothing. And it wasn't just me--there was a kid in there who needed stitches, and guess what? They charged his family $13,000 USD for a few stitches! Let that sink in. Then, they had the audacity to try to charge me $2,000 USD for a simple IV--something that costs a fraction of that anywhere else. They are shameless thieves who prey on tourists, exploiting people when they are vulnerable and in need of medical attention. The staff? Rude, indifferent, and completely incompetent. They act like they're doing you a favor just by acknowledging your existence. No urgency, no care, just a bunch of scammers in white coats looking to rob you blind. Hospiten Riviera Maya is the biggest rip-off I have ever experienced, and I wouldn't wish this place on my worst enemy. Do yourself a favor--if you need medical attention, go literally anywhere else. This place should be shut down.

Also the Dr. looked like was 16 years old; probably the son of the real Dr. who was out spending the money they steal from me. Bad for tourism. also I contacted the corporate website and they responded that i can send them my bill and they will help me understand it. what a scam
