In May, I traveled with my mother to Playa del Carmen, and unfortunately, during the trip, she…read morebecame ill. We called an ambulance, which took her to Costamed Hospital. Upon arrival, we presented our U.S. passports, and I was immediately asked to pay a $4,000 USD deposit. They also asked if we had travel insurance, to which I replied yes. The staff were polite when communicating with the insurance company. The hospital requested the maximum coverage amount and a guarantee of payment (GOP). However, since our insurance worked on a reimbursement basis, I was required to pay all expenses upfront and file for reimbursement once we returned to the United States. My mother was diagnosed with pneumonia and hospitalized for only 12 hours--from 10:00 p.m. to 11:00 a.m. the next day. The total cost for that brief stay was $14,000 USD, which I found absolutely outrageous and unjustified. I only had two credit cards with limited credit remaining, and when I couldn't cover the full amount, the hospital suggested transferring her to a public hospital. At the public hospital, my mother received care for six days. The conditions were very basic, and we had to purchase her medications ourselves, but she received the necessary treatment and recovered. Most surprising of all, we were not charged anything for her stay there. I offered to pay, but the Mexican government covers hospitalization for uninsured individuals, which was our case as foreign visitors. Even if we had been required to pay, the total cost for six days would have been only $700 USD. During her stay at the public hospital, I considered bringing her back to Costamed since our insurance would reimburse us. However, Costamed kept insisting on knowing how much coverage I had left in my policy. This made me feel like they were trying to take advantage of my situation as a foreign tourist. While I acknowledge that the care at Costamed was professional and the facilities were well maintained, the pricing was unacceptable. It's clear that they exploit tourists during moments of vulnerability, such as medical emergencies. This experience was extremely disappointing and left a bitter impression of what should have been fair and ethical medical care

Then I got there and started reading all of the horrible reviews (On Google reviews) AND I BECAME TERRIFIED. They require $2000 up front before they start ANYTHING. They don't want to deal with insurance: they want cash. I sat there and worried like crazy while I imagined the worst: we'd be stuck there for days, at their mercy, not knowing if anything they tell me is true, or if they're just trying to milk me for every penny I had. Ultimately we left after about 5 hours feeling like we were treated fairly and professionally. Paid $1850 for the visit and left with 4 prescriptions and felt well.

Yesterday my wife had a stomach infection she was admitted and treated , I was terrified as to how much I was gonna pay this time , well they came and ask for $5000.00 pesos guaranteed. Why in pesos you may ask ? Well because my wife is Mexican and she had a Mexican passport . So what a difference our bill was only $219 dollars - I won't say they are bad practice they really have good doctors and good service , but for a foreigner it will cost you.

This is a long overdue review of my husband's stay at Hospiten while we were on vacation in early…read more2023. He became very ill the day before we were supposed to fly home to Los Angeles and was taken by ambulance from our resort to Hospiten. He was admitted and due to the serious nature of his medical situation, had to stay in the hospital for two weeks. I can't say enough about how caring and competent the doctors were and how clean and pleasant the facility was... especially compared to the overcrowded conditions and rushed doctors we dealt with once my husband was admitted to a hospital at home to continue his care! It's true that care at this private hospital isn't cheap, but it was far less expensive than hospital care in the US. Fortunately, we were able to have all of the costs from my husband's treatment and stay at Hospiten reimbursed by our medical insurance, but they required extensive documentation, so be sure to understand what your insurance will require and get a copy of all of the records you'll need before you leave the hospital! A big, belated thank you to Dr. Rebeca Roman, Dr. Oscar Hernandez, Dr. Adan Paul Cuevas Quintero and the rest of the staff for their kind and patient care and for making a horrible, stressful situation a little less scary!

They did not know how to respond to a patient in cardiac arrest and, as a result, I watched my father die before my very eyes. My untrained eye could see he was arresting, but the nurses screwed around complaining that he was too big for them to move for 7 minutes before calling an emergency (because I started screaming for help). They waited another 4 before beginning one-handed compressions on a 230 pound patient. My dad never had a chance. He was admitted for hyponatremia and left two nights later in a body bag. I'm pursuing legal representation, but attorneys are disinterested in the case because of cartels' involvement in the private hospital system. Bottom line, if you want to live...try ANY other hospital. This incident was beyond tragic and 100% avoidable. For the $30K USD we paid, Hospiten could afford to buy wall-mounted AED machines for each room on the floor. Instead, they rolled a huge box machine into my dad's room 20 minutes into his heart attack. When I went up to collect his things 3 hours after they evacuated him to the ER, the remnants and mess were still all over the place. I had to collect his hearing aids from feces on the bathroom floor and the nurses who were literally responsible for his death watched me drag all of his belongings down the hall in a pillowcase as I wept. This is sub-human care. I wouldn't trust these people to take care of animals much less humans.

We love Mexico and happily pay tourist prices. This is the first time I have been ripped off in Mexico and it was by a company that looks legitimate at a glance. Also the Dr. looked like was 16 years old; probably the son of the real Dr. who was out spending the money they steal from me. Bad for tourism. also I contacted the corporate website and they responded that i can send them my bill and they will help me understand it. what a scam
