This is a long overdue review of my husband's stay at Hospiten while we were on vacation in early 2023. He became very ill the day before we were supposed to fly home to Los Angeles and was taken by ambulance from our resort to Hospiten. He was admitted and due to the serious nature of his medical situation, had to stay in the hospital for two weeks. I can't say enough about how caring and competent the doctors were and how clean and pleasant the facility was... especially compared to the overcrowded conditions and rushed doctors we dealt with once my husband was admitted to a hospital at home to continue his care! It's true that care at this private hospital isn't cheap, but it was far less expensive than hospital care in the US. Fortunately, we were able to have all of the costs from my husband's treatment and stay at Hospiten reimbursed by our medical insurance, but they required extensive documentation, so be sure to understand what your insurance will require and get a copy of all of the records you'll need before you leave the hospital! A big, belated thank you to Dr. Rebeca Roman, Dr. Oscar Hernandez, Dr. Adan Paul Cuevas Quintero and the rest of the staff for their kind and patient care and for making a horrible, stressful situation a little less scary! read more

These people killed my father. There is no reason he should have died. The nurse staff is completely untrained and ill-equipped to treat patients. They did not know how to respond to a patient in cardiac arrest and, as a result, I watched my father die before my very eyes. My untrained eye could see he was arresting, but the nurses screwed around complaining that he was too big for them to move for 7 minutes before calling an emergency (because I started screaming for help). They waited another 4 before beginning one-handed compressions on a 230 pound patient. My dad never had a chance. He was admitted for hyponatremia and left two nights later in a body bag. I'm pursuing legal representation, but attorneys are disinterested in the case because of cartels' involvement in the private hospital system. Bottom line, if you want to live...try ANY other hospital. This incident was beyond tragic and 100% avoidable. For the $30K USD we paid, Hospiten could afford to buy wall-mounted AED machines for each room on the floor. Instead, they rolled a huge box machine into my dad's room 20 minutes into his heart attack. When I went up to collect his things 3 hours after they evacuated him to the ER, the remnants and mess were still all over the place. I had to collect his hearing aids from feces on the bathroom floor and the nurses who were literally responsible for his death watched me drag all of his belongings down the hall in a pillowcase as I wept. This is sub-human care. I wouldn't trust these people to take care of animals much less humans. read more

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS--THEY ARE SCAMMERS AND INCOMPETENT! If I could give this place negative stars, I would. Hospiten Riviera Maya is an absolute disgrace to medical care. They made me wait over 4 HOURS in pain while they sat around doing nothing. And it wasn't just me--there was a kid in there who needed stitches, and guess what? They charged his family $13,000 USD for a few stitches! Let that sink in. Then, they had the audacity to try to charge me $2,000 USD for a simple IV--something that costs a fraction of that anywhere else. They are shameless thieves who prey on tourists, exploiting people when they are vulnerable and in need of medical attention. The staff? Rude, indifferent, and completely incompetent. They act like they're doing you a favor just by acknowledging your existence. No urgency, no care, just a bunch of scammers in white coats looking to rob you blind. Hospiten Riviera Maya is the biggest rip-off I have ever experienced, and I wouldn't wish this place on my worst enemy. Do yourself a favor--if you need medical attention, go literally anywhere else. They completely take advantage of tourists, being the closest hospital to many resorts. My husband got 3 stitches after cutting his foot open and we were charged a deposit of $2000, told it'd probably be less. Ended up having to pay just a little more. Everything online said public hospitals would be upwards of a couple hundred. With this being a private hospital we expected to pay a little more. But not more than we would have in the US. We'll do what we can to dispute it when we get back home. read more

I went to hospiten on Thursday afternoon with difficulty breathing, coughing, and profuse sweating. I made the staff aware of my previous health history (COPD, congestive heart disease, bypasses, stents, etc), I brought in all of my meds from my USA doctors, they looked at them and placed them all back in my bag and sent everything to security. They didn't have most of the meds I had been taking, the ones I brought with me, they began treating me blindly. The only time anybody knew how to speak English was when it was time to pay them deposits-- 2 separate $5K. USA deposits. Even these sheisters didn't want their own national currency. They did nothing to relieve any of my issues or concerns-- I insisted they discharge me Saturday night/Sunday morning after 2 people died in the unit within 8 hours. I wasn't permitted my personal property until AFTER the second $5000. 'deposit' was cleared. I have insurance out the butt here; private USA insurance, Medicare, and VA health coverage universally. These crooks see a us passport and they all hear cash registers ringing. My advice to visiting this no-class, poorly trained staff, sorry excuse for a medical center... AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! read more

Unfortunately, Hospiten Los Cabos is horrible. While some of the people who worked there were nice, the hospital administrator was a very unkind nasty woman. They only wanted our money and to agree to a surgery for my husband while we were on vacation and flying home the next day. Once we wouldn't agree, they told us we had to leave. So we went back to our hotel and flew home the next morning. Since then they have been paid both by us when we were in the hospital as well as by our insurance company. They have over $3,000 more than the total bill. But they are refusing to refund my money. They are basically criminals. They never answer the phone of their international billing office in Florida. And the person I am supposed to be working with ignores my emails and my repeated attempts to speak to a supervisor. Just stay away from these people. read more

Hospiten Riviera Maya shamelessly tries to benefit from you or your insurance company by pressuring you to do unnecessary tests and accept expensive hospitalisation for ridiculous reasons. My mom had a rash which, according to a resort doctor, probably was just an allergic reaction but he suggested going to the Hospiten Riviera Maya to do some blood tests to discard a tropical bug bite. He mentioned that this test is very simple and takes some 10 min. This seemed quite reasonable to us, so we decided to go. Here we had an appointment with doctor Alejandro who glanced at the rash from across the table and started rambling about hematoma, haemorrhage, and other terrifying symptoms and insisting that first of all he must accomplish tests to find out what my mom's health is in general. I asked him what specific tests he is going to do but received no clear answer. The whole appointment took less than 5 mins after which we were directed to a receptionist. The latter asked for our credit card to reserve 1250 USD for the tests. Luckily, I had called our insurance before going to the hospital and had been warned not to pay by ourselves, to get insurance's approval before doing any tests apart from blood, urine, and a few others and - which I thought utterly irrelevant at that moment - to get their approval if the clinic would suggest hospitalisation. It took some time to communicate with the insurance company, but finally the hospital staff sent them the doctor's report and an estimate for approval. When a girl from the reception came to me saying that the insurance refused to pay the amount they requested, I asked what this amount was. Only then it turned out that the hospital asked to cover 5000 USD for admitting my mom to the hospital for one night because they needed... time to do the tests. As I mentioned that hospitalisation is out of the question, the staff immediately replied that they can do the same tests in a few hours for 1250 USD. I asked to see doctor Alejandro one more time and asked him again what specific tests he is going to do. However, he wasn't capable of answering the question clearly and kept on brainwashing us about the general health of my mom. That was enough for us and we decided not to proceed with any procedures in this hospital. We were presented with the receipt for the services we already received and found out that this 5-min-across-the-table-inspection of the rash costs 330 USD. The staff insisted further that we would pay by our credit card since the insurance approved only 250 USD for this kind of issue but after we refused they managed to get in contact with the insurance company themselves and get everything paid by the company. We managed to get out of this clinic without any significant loss but a ruined last day of vacation but I believe that people with more serious health problems and under higher stress might agree to everything this clinic suggests - like paying themselves insane costs for unnecessary procedures that later insurances might not cover. And the clinic seems to have no shame in exploiting tourists. read more

I unfortunately got E. coli at a resort. I was placed in an ambulance and taken to Hospiten where I received attentive and kind service. Their GI protocol resolved my symptoms and bacterial infection. Yes, a lot of money had to be paid upfront, however after contacting my insurance I was assured it would covered and reimbursed. We must remember that their healthcare system is much different than ours. They do the best with what that have available. read more

DO NOT GO! Horrible experience with baby suffering from inflammation and they made us pay for a flu test and a prescription for medication, not even antibiotics, 2000 dollars. Baby is in pain day and night, has a fever of 39.5 and they offer us a day at their place to keep him for observation. It's a scam to get even more money out of us. read more

While on vacation last week I had an accident at the resort I was staying in. The staff there recommended coming to this hospital. Once my friends and I arrived they immediately separated me from them and told us they were unable to come into the room with me because it was too busy and crowded. When I got into the hospital room, I was the only one there. Before looking at my injury they told me that my stitches would cost me $2,500 USD and demanded the payment before they did anything. Thankfully my family has a friend in the Cancun area that was able to help me and bring me to another hospital in the area. They charged me only $400 USD, and made me feel much more comfortable and safe. This place is a rip off to tourist and should not be recommended by any resort. Please explore other options before coming here! They don't even deserve the one star I was forced to give them! read more

I had a nightmare experience in this place! First pf all a doctor came to my hotel and she only filled out paperwork and sent me to this hospital. She didn't prescribe anything or prescribed anything. She works for the hospital, she was a general dr and pretty much she said my son needed to see a pediatrician, when I asked for a pediatrician to star with. I was charged twice at the hospital. I couldn't do the check out to get the 3,000 pesos deposit back because of terminal issues. So after putting the 3,000 deposit I had to pay for the service in cash because their machine wasn't working. I was promised that I wouldn't get charged the 3,000 pesos, but they did get a hold of my money. And they promised that if it happened they would return my money the next day. That happened 5 days ago and I got charged for the service. And now I'll have to deal with this. My sons health is better, but dealing with this people made me nauseas is. It was a very unpleasant experience. read more

Hospiten offers medical service onsite at the Barceló Occidental Xcaret resort. Room phones have a doctor button that dials directly into their office at the hotel facilities. They charge $150 USD for a doctor room visit: a) They charge 40% more to foreigner tourists than to Mexican tourists. This is unethical and discriminatory. b) They charge in USD, which is illegal in Mexico even though a lot of people do it in Cancun and the Riviera Maya. They should charge their services in Mexican pesos. c) Their fees are outrageous for Mexican medical service standards. They don't even send a specialist but a general practitioners. read more

This place is a scam. Your hotel doctor will tell you to come here because they get a kick back. Do not go here, go to the only real hospital in the area which is The Hospital General Playa Del Carmen. My wife almost died because of this place. We went here because our hotel doctor said to. My wife was having abdominal pain. We showed up and they wanted $2500 USD up front. They diagnosed appendicitis and said we would have to pay $33000 USD. I called my insurance company and they said we were covered. I told Hospiten this and they said they would not deal with our insurance and we would have to pay $33000 USD up front. I said I didn't have $33000 USD upfront but my insurance said to have them call them and they would guarantee it. They still refused to deal with the insurance company and said they would not perform the life saving surgery my wife needed unless we paid $33000 USD upfront. I explained I could not get that to them in time to save my wife and they said they could wait up to 12 hours for the money before performing the surgery. Waiting 12 hours in this situation could have resulted in death. We waisted 4 hours at Hospiten and left to go the Hospital General Playa Del Carmen. My wife's appendix ended up rupturing making this much more life threatening. At the Hospital General Play Del Carmen real doctors saved my wife's life. The time we waisted at Hospiten could have killed my wife. This place is criminal and should not be allowed to operate. The resorts that send people here are also criminals because there is no way they don't know what is going on here. read more

Avoid this place like the plague and I say this as a physician. I had the misfortune of needing medical care while in Mexico and our hotel recommended this hospital. I needed IV fluids for acute pancreatitis and dehydration. The ED did a good job and started with a bolus of IV fluids. They consulted a specialist who proceeded to decrease my rate from 500 cc/hr to 83 cc/hr. When I asked his rationale for the decrease he told me "if you don't like my decisions you can leave". I politely explained I was also a physician and was curious why he would go with such a low rate for fluid resuscitation as it was different from how I was trained. I asked if it was a weight based decision as I hadn't been weighed on arrival. He refused to answer and yelled at me. Again I was told that I would leave. The average adult has insensible fluid loss of ~1L per day but in hot environments this can reach 2-3L. A rate of 83 cc/hr replenishes 1L in 12 hours which is clearly not enough to make up the deficit. Additionally, pancreatitis is typically treated with aggressive hydration ~250-500cc/hr for 24 hours. My vitals were checked a total of twice, labs were checked upon arrival and never rechecked (I was admitted overnight) though I was told they would be checked between 8-830AM. When he rounded, 1030AM, I took him up on his offer to leave the hospital. I went straight to the airport and flew home to get proper care. This care was substandard and dangerous without taking into account bedside manner. I was charged $1500 for my ED consult, $3000 for my admission and $300 for a CT. I was given 3 doses of toradol, 2 doses omeprazole, minimal IV fluids, and berated by the doctor in exchange. I suspect they charge as much as possible and deliver as little care as possible to maximize their profits. Shame on them. read more

This is a wonderful hospital. My husband and I live in Playa Del Carmen, we are retired. In NYC I was a hospital administrator. When we first went to the hospital it was an emergency. We were anxious knowing that my husband would probably be admitted and we didn't know what to expect. We do have a doctor here and are very happy but a hospital was a whole different animal and we were concerned. Well there was no need. My husband did have to be admitted. He had cellulitis, he was immediately seen by the doctor, our Spanish was not as string as it is now, but that wasn't a problem at all, everyone spoke English. He was treated incredibly well, never had he had an IV put in where he didn't have a huge bruise, after two days in there was not even a mark on his arm. The phlebotomists were amazing, very skilled, the nurses were kind and efficient. He was treated very well. The hospital room was spotlessly clean. The rooms were very large and I was able to stay in the room in my own bed. We were three two nights, three full days. When I went to settle the bill it was $1500 US. I was able to submit it to our insurance company and was reimbursed 1300. I can't say enough about this hospital. Since this experience I've been seeing an orthopedist regarding my knees and am completely happy. This is a wonderful hospital. read more

Absolutely useless hospital. My resort doctor said my girlfriend needed to come here as she had a stomach bug and her blood pressure was low, well to come here it was a fortune in credit card bills. The ER doc that came in did tests and said that she would need to be admitted for the day, but in order to do that it would be $3000 up front as a hold.. Um ok for what exactly? Well turns out they just try to rip you off and charge you like crazy. After I told them she would not be staying the night since she had a confirmed case of rotavirus (stomach flu) they took 2 hours to discharge her despite the doctor saying she could go home. Apparently it was to charge up my credit card further. Also they are more or less useless and took 3 blood tests, one was at night before release to "measure white blood cell counts" which should not change in 12 hours... This was after we refused to stay there for the night. These people are scam artists and will take your money, seriously go to any other place but stay away from this so called "hospital" unless you want to be in debt from the fortune they will charge for nothing. I ended up paying them $1000.00 and think had I not objected they would have charged me all $3000.00 read more

I had to stay here for 2 nights while on vacation in Playacar due to pneumonia. The doctors and nurses were all very professional and friendly. The staff in the ER speak excellent English, on the other hand, the nurses upstairs when I had to be admitted spoke very little English- which was a little scary. The doctor assigned to my case was an internist and he was awesome, I fully trusted him and felt very comfortable with the treatment that he gave me. It was a nightmare experience to be so sick while in Mexico, but I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else. Highly recommend if you need a hospital while in Playa. read more

This hospiten overcharges Americans. I went to the hospiten riviera maya last week and got 4 stitches in my head that cost me $1,668. When I had them removed yesterday in the USA, they said it would have been about $500 in the USA. Aside from that, the hospiten was fine, clean and professional. I was only there about 1+1/2 hours. I didn't need an anesthesiologist. The DR that stitched me up just injected a numbing drug and stitched me up - just 4 stitches that took him maybe 5-10 minutes. No other procedures needed or performed. That was all there was to it. He also gave me a prescription I had to fill for antibiotics. They were cheap at the local pharmacy. I got the strong impression that there is a separate billing for tourists and one for locals. I could not imagine locals paying anywhere near this much. Since my deductible is still more than this, the entire amount was out-of-pocket for me. What a rip-off. It ruined my vacation and prevented me from spending more $ on fun stuff. If you are a tourist, DO NOT go to here unless you want to pay quadruple what the locals pay. read more

We came here with our 7 year old son. He came down with a red, swollen ankle with blisters and green puss. This was very scary for us, but when we got to this hospital, we were impressed by it being immaculately clean, how quickly we were helped, and by our spectacular doctor (Dr Martha Elena Garcia Melendez). When she walked in the room I instantly felt safe. Being from the U.S. we had to pay $800 up front and were then reimbursed for what we didn't spend. Our bill was very pricey ($717), but I PROMISE YOU IT IS WORTH COMING HERE if you need it! We will likely be reimbursed by insurance so I'm not too worried about it. I'm just glad my son had great care and is okay. read more

I am a resident of Playa del Carmen and I was hit on my bicycle and dislocated my shoulder very severely. Do not go to this hospital under any circumstance it's a complete rip off at especially if you are from a different country they will charge a fortune on your credit card and give you sub par treatment!!! They charge me well over thousand dollars and I woke up screaming in pain why they were resetting most shoulder the unprofessional nurse while trying to give me an IV squirted my blood all over the floor and the walls and was shaky and dropping things. I came back three weeks later for pain medication refill which I was never properly given and they charged me for an ER visit ... even though the doctor told me to come to his office for a refill .. the orthopedic surgeon never even checked on me to see if I was healing properly. I came here for an Emergancy while I was on vacation in the area. They saw me quick, were super nice, clean and helpful. It isn't cheap, but it was worth it. If you're from the U.S. you likely need to pay upfront and they'll give you all the paperwork you need to send home to your doctor and insurance for a reimbursement claim. read more

My husband got sick last year while we where visiting Playa. He was seen promptly and ended up being hospitalized for two days. The staff was excellent and most of the nurses spoke English as well as the doctor (Gonzalez). The room was very spacious and clean. They allowed me to stay with him as long as they didn't need the bed next to him. They brought me a pillow and blanket. Upon discharge we where given a complete packet with itemized billing, doctors reports and lab reports to submit to our insurance. We paid out of pocket about $1500 U.S. which would have been many times more in the U.S. My husband is a medical care professional and has worked at many hospitals. We was very pleased with the care he received. read more

If I could give them zero stars I would. I was rushed to the hospital from a resort I was staying at. My blood pressure was dangerously low and they told me I had aggressive kidney infection. First, they wouldn't even allow me in the hospital without a 1000$ charge. I was in a different country and my card didn't go through. Luckily my mom was able to send her card information over and they brought me into the emergency room. The nurses and doctors in the emergency room were fairly nice and spoke good English. I was told I needed to be admitted inpatient for immediate treatment. As they do this they demand even MORE money. My travel insurance was covering it, but they still kept trying to hit up my family for more money. While I was there nobody ever checked in on me throughout the hospitalization. They never told me what was going on. They were rude and didn't speak English very well. And the insurance lady downstairs? A bitch isn't a strong enough word. She was incredibly rude to me, sent my family nasty emails in all caps demanding they send money. Horrible horrible experience. AVOID THIS HOSPITAL!!! It's a scam and all they want is money and tot take advantage of tourists. read more
