I had received several invites to go and check out the Impact Hub as it went through it's various stages of it's Kickstarter and then the construction had started. I had really wanted to check it out, but as I have said before (in my Fazeley Social review), I don't get down to Digbeth all that often and hadn't managed to check it out. An invite from Birmingham Social Media Cafe for that months meet up landed in my email (check it out http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/birmingham-social-media-cafe-birmingham) and it's location was the newly built Impact Hub! "Perfect", I thought, "A chance to meet the lovely Social media peeps of Birmingham and check out this new venue in Birmingham." The weather on that particular Friday was atrocious, but off I went to find it and have a nose. Now, it's located a little out of the way (as most venues in Digbeth are), but the Walker building is relatively easy to find with a map app and is easily distinguishable from the other places around it. I spotted the decorated Impact windows and headed around the side entrance to pop in before BSMC. You have to buzz to gain entry, but follow the courtyard around and you will see the yellow door to get in. The space is wonderful! Bright, bold and very airy; if I could stump up the subscription fee this is definitely somewhere I could work. Impact Hub is a co-working/shared office space but offers something different to it's "hubbies" with a real Community spirit behind it. Each member gets an etched mug and access to the onsite coffee shop (free for members) and it seems to be a very supportive environment to work in. I got a chance to sneak and peek the secret nap room, the lab, the office, the kitchen and the more open work areas and it's all beautiful. If you're looking for a great place to work on a casual or more regimented basis, I would definitely check the offering out here. read more

Impact Hub Birmingham is an amazing place to work or host an event or meeting. I am self employed freelancer and joined impact hub as a full time member which means I get unlimited access to facilities, wifi, unlimited teas & coffees and can use impact hub as my registered business address. It's a fantastic place to work with a warm atmosphere that would suit people who work In creative industries, social enterprise, charities, arts, tech and more. Once you've been here a few weeks you really feel part of a loving community not just a random on a desk! The events here are fantastic and lots of external companies hire spaces for their own private conferences or events as well. Have heard lots of great feedback from external bookers. They have their own coffee shop which charges only £1.50 a tea or coffee to non-members - members get free, coffee is so so tasty & reliably/ethically sourced. I've watched the development of the Impact Hub pretty much from the get-go and it's a fascinating idea very much of its time ... which is right now and into the future. I've been to two meetings there and each time I've been impressed. I can't justify cash wise being a member as I choose to work part-time and as a 'cheap but good' consultant exclusively with community-based projects that I like, but I can appreciate why it has such a loyal following. If money was less tight I would definitely see it as a relevant place in Birmingham to meet and collaborate with others. I suggest that if it feels like the right place for you then pop along and check it out at least. The first meeting I went to there was pretty smooth. It was held in the Town Hall area, which is very slick indeed. You walk through the main ground floor 'shared office' sections where folks are working, meeting, chatting, doing good things, etc and then head upstairs. The teas and coffee on offer are very decent and the biscuits are good quality too - this says something because this simple stuff is nearly always cheap and nasty when you go to a meeting venue. These people care about everything. As you look and walk around, it's all been thought about and it all feels integrated and of high integrity. The vibe is one of community, freedom and excellence. My second meeting was less great an experience. I rang the bell a number of times but no-one answered so I was stuck on the street until luckily a member came along and let me in. Then there was no one inside to show me where the meeting was and there was no indication anywhere that I could see of exactly where the meeting could be. I had no clue who to ask. Luckily I met some people I knew and they showed me. The meeting was fine. Really, I suppose in all fairness the people running the meeting, rather than the Impact Hub, should have got their fingers out instead of just chatting amongst themselves upstairs. So I'm not going to be mean and dock a point even tho I reckon getting in through the door and having someone greet visitors is real basic stuff if you run a meet space. Something was missing there. I do think overall it's entirely reasonable to see it as a blip and so I'd rate the place as a super-solid 5***** read more

My business partner and I booked a tour of Impact Hub, and when we got there we were greeted quite hostilely by a woman who looked at us like "who are you" we had to find somewhere to sit as nothing was offered for us to wait in. The person who was to give us a tour knew we were there but no greeting was made or acknowledgement. The first girl mumbled someone will be over (but who?) We have projects in line and were looking for collaboration or even partnerships with local organisations to work on our next funded work. We were sat there waiting and nothing happened; it was dead...' interesting quote I found there about building a larger table as opposed to a higher fence, well, their fence is skyscraper tall. Appalling service and how a reflection of the city it is... We left after + ten minutes of staring into space... read more
