I was really impressed with HKCF's willingness to "go the extra mile" for some out-of-towners who…read morewere interested in local history. A friend and I were going to be in from out of town and were really keen to learn about the architecture and history of KC. We checked their web site for tours to see what the availability was, but the note said that tours were available for "groups of four or more." Sad face. But, since the tour was only $10 per person, we decided to ask whether, if we paid $20 each [we come from Chicago, where an architecture tour is more than that per person, standard], could we arrange for it to be done with just the two of us? We coordinated with a guide and yes, it was set up, so we got to have our very own 2 hour walking tour and lecture of the Art Deco buildings in downtown KC! (many of them have been renovated into loft/apartment spaces, so gladly they haven't been torn down despite lack of use. The coolest were the Power and Light, with a glass "lantern" in the top spire; the Union Carbide, with dark brickwork offset by pale "gingerbread icing" trim in Deco patterns; and the Jenkins Music Company building, with a black facade and Deco chevrons in contrasting gold [it's only the face of the building now; it backs up to parking garages, but at least they saved that!]) We unfortunately coincided with a VERY hot day but our obliging guide soldiered on. Overall, it was an informative and interesting event. Thanks so much for working with us, HKCF! We got to see some of the real old KC that we wouldn't have otherwise. :)

I was visiting town to see a friend at the Renaissance Fair a few months back, and happened to find…read morethis museum while doing a quick search before I left. Although my experience with the Deaf is relatively limited, I've had an interest in ASL since I was young so I was very excited to come and visit! I walked in and went directly to the gift shop, thinking I should wait for someone to lead me into the museum. I found several things that I wanted to buy after I viewed the museum itself, including ILY keychains and more! The museum itself does have a lot to read, but it was very interesting to learn more about the Deaf and their culture. They also have a quiz you can take at the end of the museum. You get the answers from the exhibits, although it seems that I did miss a few! To reiterate though, there is a lot of reading and I probably got through half (maybe less) of the museum before I started cherry-picking what to read and look at. In that regard, it might be best to come back several times, if you can, and take it in little by little! I also got a chance to practice my sign language skills, which I hardly ever do, so I was barely conversational. That could be partly attributed to being nervous though, since it is a foreign language to me. Nonetheless, if you get the chance to sign/speak with the volunteers (emplyees?) there, do it! They were both very fun to converse with.

This is a must visit! The only complaint I have is that I did not schedule more time in my day to…read morebe here. My visit was for a class project. I am truly thankful for this project as I found the museum absolutely fascinating and very informative. You learn about how innovations limit barriers for deaf individuals. You will learn about the history of deaf schools. The discrimination and attempts to force deaf individuals to adapt to the hearing world are heart breaking. The room set up to show how a deaf person lives is fascinating. The staff is great. Knowing a bit of sign language helped me to be able to communicate with the deaf staff, but where we found barriers in communicating they were very friendly and accommodating and we easily overcame those communication obstacles. Take some time to visit this hidden gem in Olathe. It is free to visit, but throw some money in the donation box. The knowledge you will gain is worth it!!!

We recently had our wedding here. The wedding and reception itself, were perfect. I could not have…read moreasked for a better wedding. However, there were many issues along the way. 1. Communication was an issue. 2. Management is lacking.. secretary is needed. 3. Things that were promised or were said to happen, did not. We ran into big issues day/night of rehearsal, and multiple things on wedding day did not go smoothly/were not given everything we were supposed to. This is a great venue for anyone who wants to have a rustic barn wedding and for those that want their pinterest ideas to come to life. We were able to do pretty much everything we wanted to create our perfect wedding. In the end I had my perfect wedding. We were just not pleased with the process leading up to it. I think this venue needs to get a few things in order before having too many more weddings.

So this business totally screwed us out of money. Cassandra the Owner/Manager takes advantage of…read moreyoung couple's lack of knowledge, pretends to be your friend, promises you the world, and doesn't deliver. She will make you sign a contract, then break it herself. We paid to rent the entirety of the property, she decided to have her own personal graduation party at the house we were supposed to have full access to, and we were told about it the morning of the wedding. We also paid for a full staff of 4 to 5 people to help manage the event, get things ready, help park guests, ect. All of her workers we were told, just chose to not show up to work that day. So my groomsmen had to set up the wedding, and my wife's family tore it down, things we paid for her non-existent staff to do. We paid for several extras that were not provided, including giant inflatable hamster balls, a cake back drop, and TV to play a picture video(which my wife worked on for 2 week, didn't get played), and pony's for the kids(which showed up, but 2 hours late), none of these things were provided. The groomsmen dressing room had the AC break, from what we were told was that morning, but given how much Cassandra lies, I wouldn't be shocked if that was BS too. We were also told that if we had more guest show up to the ceremony than we had chairs set up, she would immediately get more set up so we didn't have guests that needed to stand. That didn't happen, and we had about 20 people standing. When we brought up our issues with Cassandra the next day, she got defensive and just had empty excuses .We demanded a partial refund. We were told it would be there in a week, we were married May 12th, 2018. Today is June 30th, still no check. We have called her multiple times about it, again more excuses .DO NOT GET MARRIED HERE .SHE WILL STEAL YOUR MONEY AND LEAVE YOU HIGH AND DRY. We are currently looking into alternative options to get our money back, since Cassandra has proven to be unreliable.
