Simply fabulous. We went on a early summer night with perfect weather and it was great. The hospitality was top notch and they have all the right touch's that take it up to the next level. The hammock, the dock with kayaks that you can take out, the fishing poles at the ready by the lake, the Adirondack chairs, and the bonfire after it got dark. I would really recommend going to any event here if you get a chance. read more

I've never really thought about it, but there aren't many better places to build a decently-powered…read moretelescope and observatory than in the middle of nowhere. A small park just of outside of Louisburg, KS, certainly qualifies. It's quiet, out of the way, and most importantly, it's nowhere near the bright city lights. When Mother Nature cooperates, you can see forever. Second star to the right and straight on 'til morning. As of this writing, I've only visited for a private event, however the Astronomical Society of Kansas City hosts events twice per month between May and October. If this sounds like something you'd want to participate in then please visit the Powell Observatory website and / or the Astronomical Society of Kansas City's Facebook page for more info.

This is one of the most underrated hidden gems threat KC has to offer in my opinion! Set in the country of Louisburg, the ASKC hosts dozens of public nights for stargazing and planet observations. They also have an option to have a private event which we have done for a birthday party. The telescope is massive and it's incredible what planets, galaxies, and stars I've been able to see! Bring a coat and blanket if it's winter as the viewing dome is not heated. Make sure to check out their upcoming summer programs open to the public!

This 1888 Santa Fe train depot interprets railroad history and local history through thematic rooms, some of which are interactive. The upstairs has an old general store, a one-room school (which kids can play in), an old soda fountain, an industry room, a Victorian parlor, and an old farm house kitchen. The downstairs has rotating exhibit space and an experiential exhibit about Bleeding Kansas, as Franklin County was the site of a massacre led by John Brown, which fueled the Civil War. My young son especially enjoyed the large model train layout! Great staff provides an overview of the museum upon entry. There is a modest entry fee. The site is accessible.
