The Printing House

Downtown Core

I was looking for a printing center where I can go after work, finally I ran into TPH! This…read moreprinting center opens 22hr/weekday. It is right at Union station, at the underground level of Brookfield place. This location offers basic paper printing services with variety of paper to choose from. Their other locations also do 3D printing, and laser cut. The man who works at this location looks very serious (I was a little intimidated at first).but he is actually very nice and professional. I would suggest to contact them first before having anything printed.

I went here once so that I could have my portfolio bound. I had done my original portfolio by…read moremyself so it was looking not so up to snuff. I was pretty excited to have it magically transform into a beautiful piece of art that I could show off to potential employers. Except when I walked in the door, I was greeted by less than friendly staff. I didn't expect to be given a tiara and a glass of champagne, but I think I stood at the counter for 10 minutes before someone helped me. Then the guy who served me kind of gave me the "yah? What do you want" routine and so I coyly suggested I have some of the pages redone and the cover re-bound. I asked if he suggest I do anything else and he said he didn't know. He then swiftly took my stuff away and came back 15 minutes later with my semi-new portfolio in hand. He rang up what I owed him while answering a phone call. He didn't look at me or have the courtesy to call the guy back while he finished serving me. I left feeling deflated that I hadn't asked for more help or been more assertive, but I didn't have the energy. Shouldn't these people WANT to help you? WANT to make something look professional and beautiful that you'd be proud of, and then, presumably, you'd suggest their services to your friends (or potential employers?) I dunno, maybe not all TPH locations are like this, but I'll never go back here again.

Binding Logic - Stitched binding and cover

The Annex

I found out about Binding Logic through a friend, and word of mouth is usually a very reliable form…read moreof recommendation. Unfortunately, my experience with Binding Logic was a disappointment at every possible point of the transaction. 1. Appointments are a pain to make. Judith operates by appointment only, and appointments are only made through a cumbersome email back-and-forth process. Every single time you see her, you need to go through this process. 2. She makes it impossible to pay. We had some discussion on how my thesis would be bound. She gave me the price, and asked for payment of $187.39. "And you can pay me in cash or cheque." Oh? There was nothing on her website or her emails indicating that would be the case. I did not have $200 in cash on me, nor my cheque book, because it's 2015. I asked whether she could hold the project until I could get her the money another day. She outright refused, saying that she MUST start the project immediately and that she would only start once she had the money. She pointed me to the nearest ATM, then noted that she does not provide change. For $187.39. 3. She doesn't tell you when your project is complete. She told me that the project would be finished in 2 weeks. 4 weeks passed and I heard nothing from her. I followed up with her, only to discover that it had been finished and waiting for me. 4. She makes errors. She had omitted 8 lines on my cover, which she had charged me an extra $30+hst for. Because she did not contact me when the project was complete, there was not enough time for her to correct her errors before my deadline. As a result, I was not able to have the thesis in any of my graduation photos. 5. She does not offer a courtesy discount for her errors. I will never get those pictures back. I will never have another convocation. I have forever lost the opportunity to have my thesis in my pictures. And she got a nice long deadline and suffered no losses. Not even a 10% discount for her mea culpa. 6. The binding was not done well. The pages have been trimmed poorly and there is glue coming out of the spine. She waved it off as "that's normal". Several months later, my thesis cover has bowed irreparably and looks like a joke on my bookshelf. I don't know how this person runs a business when she makes so many simple business errors. I especially don't understand how she manages to have any customers given they all come from word-of-mouth. I will certainly be recommending my colleagues to NOT use her services.

I went to Judith to have my books redone in December. It is now the end of July and I have not…read morereceived anything back from her. The entire ordeal of having to conduct business with her has been an absolute nightmare. First and foremost: I cannot reach her through any method of communication. I've called, I've tweeted, I've emailed, etc.--no reply at all. I've reached her once by phone and that was a hot mess of excuses and no firm reply as to when I'd ever see my books again. I cannot believe that anyone would ever run their business in such an unprofessional manner, completely disregarding any attempt at communicating with her. She IS alive, I am assuming, as she finds time to post Tweets every bloody day. 19,890 tweets and one of my phone calls answered, zero replies to emails, zero to my own tweets directed at her. Albeit, she was very pleasant when I first met her, but the experience has been utterly embarrassing from there. I wish I had never brought my book to her and I will be astonished when she proves to me that my business is still of some worth to her. The lowest rating does not express just how horrific this process has been. Judith: GIVE ME BACK MY BOOKS.
