HONESTY should not be a rare quality in a mechanic but finding a good, honest mechanic can be so difficult in the Bay Area! That is why I was so happy to have found Fred and the rest of his team at Image Auto Repair in San Carlos. I have been coming here for years but it only just occurred to me that I should probably write a good yelp review for them. We have taken many of our cars to them over the years both personal and fleet and they have always treated us well and fairly. I asked these folks if they could replace my Cadillac ATS CUE glass plate (damaged and scratched galore) with a new screen. (The device has not functioned for over 3 frustrating years). After providing me with the most reasonable estimate, I scheduled the appointment for 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 24. At 11:00 a.m., my vehicle was ready for me to pick up with the new CUE screen. Fred is the best! I've taken my car here a few times for oil changes and maintenance on my 2016 Ford. I recently brought it in complaining about a weird shuddering I was feeling and asked him to look into it. When I went to pick up my car he said he did feel what I was talking about, however, since there were no codes stored the diagnostic would be costly. He advised me to take it to ford since my transmission is still under warranty with them. I was floored. This is honesty and integrity and hes earned my business for life. I used to work on the Oracle campus in Redwood Shores, and driving to redwood city wasn't such a big deal, however that ended. But now I make the drive from San Francisco to a car repair shop is unheard-of for someone who has island mentality (not wanting to leave the city) and hates driving. However when it comes to peace of mind, both in respect to my car, and the work done on it (safety), that of course is more important. So I make the drive, before to Redwood City where they were located and had to move due to lease ending, and now to this amazing huge building in San Carlos! Anyway the work done on my car has been brakes, tires, alignment, tune-up, smog - the usual. I've also sent many of my friends over as far as Mill Valley and San Jose. Dishonest auto repair shop. I've taken my car there and spent thousands of dollars (enough to buy a new car) on numerous repairs and replaced just about every part of the car, yet my car would act up again in a month and hence they fixed everything but what my car needed. I was also charged $250 once for someone to replace just the side mirror that cost $50 online and took 15 minutes to do... Ridiculous. If you seem unknowledgeable about cars they will use that to their advantage. Beware of unnecessary extra work. Get a second opinion before considering expensive work here. read more

Took my car in for a transmission estimate. When I dropped off the car I was not give any paperwork nor informed that they would charge me for an estimate. I received a call from the girl at the front office telling me I needed a new transmission for $3,600.00. I told her I wasn't sure if we wanted to repair it and when I went to pick the car up, she told me the transmission came out fine on the computer (which she told me was a very good machine which cost them 10K). I felt that was a red flag since you tell me how great your computer is and my car came out fine... I needed additional information on how they knew the transmission was bad. I asked talk to the mechanic because I want more info - she went in the back and told me he was too busy to talk and just to tell me they inspected the car and that I need a new transmission. Could he have at least called me on the phone to discuss / explain ? I was charged $130.00 and never talked to anyone but the front office girl. Poor service and felt ripped off. Recommended by a friend to Image Auto. 1st experience was due to break line having to be replace, in order to have job done, gas tank needed to be removed. Two weeks later, vehicle is acting up, we thought it was the battery, replaced it. Then replaced fuel filter, still not working properly. Then car wont start, have it towed to Image Auto for the 2nd time, fuel pump inside the gas tank is not working. The same gas tank the shop removed to fix the break line. Now I have to pay for new fuel tank, and given a list of other issues all of a sudden wrong with the vehicle. The new issues were never an issue the 1st visit. I paid for service over the phone. Vehicle is picked up, and low on fuel. Drive to Costco in Redwood City to fill-up, gas is all over the floor, leaking out of the vehicle. Yes a new gas tank at the tune of over $800+ and gas is on the floor. When we call the shop, they try to apologize and then hung up on us......upon arrival it take them all of 5 minutes to fix what ever they forgot to do to tighten up. Oh yes and they refunded me $10 for gas & a back room full of laughs from the mechanics. And that will be the last time I visit Image Auto, or recommend anyone to this location.
