Year 2, Volunteering at my jobs Poker Night Fundraiser!…read more This place is so beautiful, definitely a wedding venue contender. It's huge!!! The bathrooms are clean and so elegant. They have a vault on the first floor, this area is used for the VIP section. The food was so good, I especially loved the tenderloin pictured below. They have valet, highly recommend as parking is horrible due to the downtown area. That's the only drawback is the parking sucks. Otherwise, I can't wait to volunteer next year.

El Dorado Ballroom is easily one of my favorite community spaces. There's always something…read morehappening that helps me connect with and learn from the community I frequent so often. Their Juneteenth kickoff press party was informative, lively, and filled with the kind of creative energy that makes Houston feel like home for a transplant like myself. The cocktails, sponsored by Gentleman No. 3, were refreshing with fresh watermelon and mint. The small bites (mac and cheese with collard greens, deviled eggs, and jerk chicken) made for the perfect happy hour snack. I genuinely love El Dorado and the range of programming they offer. When you can experience culture, creativity, and community all under one roof, it's a true neighborhood gem. With Kindred Stories moving into the building and ongoing art exhibits, the space just keeps growing. El Dorado makes it easy to learn from your neighbors and get to know them too.

When looking for an affordable venue place, what ultimately made me decide on a different venue was…read morethe overall maintenance of the building. Perhaps it was the dark lights, the fact there were strangely placed mirrors in the entry way, or the huge crack in the stair entryway, but all of those little things and the overall darkness and colors of the wall, gave the building an apperance of a not so well maintained appearance, especially in comparison to the other Sterling locations. I found the woman who was there to be pleasant and I did like the space available as there were clear places for a cake, buffett, nice sized bar, but it didn't meet my needs. (Though the 500 discount is a nice touch.) Another concern of my future inlaws was the location. I grew up in that neighborhood, so I wasn't scared. They weren't either once I pointed out I use to eat at the Lucky Chinese buffett all the time across the street and get food from the McDonalds, but they were concerned how guests would react who are simply not familiar with the area and easily scared off. My guests are not so easily scared, but my fiancee's family would be coming from Australia, Canada, etc. so they may be weary of the location, which was another unfortunate negative. My suggestion? Remove the mirrors from the entryway, fix the cracked/missing portion of the stairs, and see about adding more lighting or possibly repainting the hall. It was difficult to point out what about it made it eh, but when you see how pretty the other Sterling Halls are, you really do wonder why this one was so poorly maintained.

This is a nice Plaza located way out in the East part of Houston close to the garage where I get my car fixed. I think they do a really good job in general and I like them. The hubs conducted a happy hour Yelp search, zeroed in on Lawless, as there aren't many in the top…read more10 that we haven't tried, and we made our way over! Lawless gives speakeasy vibes as from the entrance (I wish they'd pull that carpet as there's a stale smell when you walk in), you don't get the full glory of this spot. Now, once you head upstairs, there's a different (and much more exciting) story to be told! The street view, the balcony, the decor, and the "dark loungey" aesthetic is giving! We had a round of drinks ($3 off for happy hour)! The hubs had an old fashioned, and I ordered the pineapple ginger beer -- which is actually on the mocktail list, but I wanted it and added tequila. Danny, our fantastic bartender/server, was excellent (personable and attentive). He manned the bar and checked on us frequently. We ordered the fried ravioli and the meatball appetizers and (although they took quite a while to arrive) they were delicious! All in all, we'd definitely recommend and return with friends. Cheers!
