I have had nothing but a great time here. It is in a perfect location (especially for freshman), the rooms are 3 times as big as any other public dorm, and the people here have been awesome. Specifically, my RA and Head RA, Anthony Montalto and D Akisanya. They have both been so inviting and enjoyable to be around. They helped me acclimate to UIUC as a freshman and gave great advice from their time here. Couldn't ask for better staffing. Overall, amazing experience I highly recommend. read more

The shower is usually cold in my room and many of my friends say their shower is ALWAYS cold. Food is not as good as regular dining hall food, just walk to IKE and DO NOT get the meal plan here. Air circulation sucks, AC doesn't work in the heat and heat is too hot in the cold. If you're considering here because it allows pets, bring your certified emotional support animal to a place where maintenance actually fixes issues. My shower has clogged since day one. Also there are a lot of weird smells (trash, old food) throughout that I just don't smell at my friend's buildings. My parking pass was not given to me until the second day of living here, I had to park outside which resulted in me having to go through the hassle of challenging a parking ticket. read more

The people who work in the accounting office are incompetent. They double billed for my nieces room and then sent my niece a note that she was being evicted for non-payment. They couldn't figure out that she was paid in full in the primary account they set up. They were not pleasant about it and weren't able to unravel it on their own. With the 2019-2020 academic year being cut short due to Covid-19, the average amount of the refund from university housing was close to $2400; IT only gave $800 as they are private housing. As a student athlete, my niece did not have an option to live anywhere else. If you have the option to live elsewhere, you should. read more

After living here for one year I can say that this is the worst place to live, ever. I genuinely want to cry the way I was treated by the staff and by management. First things first, this place is ridiculously expensive. I'm talking 3-4 times the rate you would pay off campus. And for something labeled as luxury living you would expect a luxury, or at least livable experience. My AC broke at least 3-4 times a semester. There was a point in time where all three of the A/C's in our apartment broke for over a month, and despite 4 maintenance requests, they were never fixed. The hot water also runs out really fast, you'll have to test the water before you shower so it's not cold. And also get a purifying shower head. I have seen so many pictures of resident uninstalling their purifying shower head during move out, and there was an enormous amount of metal debri falling out of the pipes that would have gone into their skin and hair. The walls are incredibly thin, and RA's don't really hold too much authority when it comes down to noise complaints. This is a very popular place to party, but be aware that residents here will party on the weekdays as well in the weekends and they will last well into late at night or early mornings. The room keys are absolute trash. The amount of times I was locked out of my room due my key card demagnetizing and my the door handle being janky is incredible. I have probably gone through at least 50 new key cards within one year. That is a huge inconvenience. It's even worse when it happens early in the morning, late at night, or even in general because there is no one at the front desk. Ever. I mean, ever. One time, I had to wait 3 hours for one RA to finish his final so he could get me a new key card and get back to my room. Another time, I had to track down my TA late at night. And my favorite memory, was when I got l locked out while moving out, and I went to all 16 floors in search of an RA to help me get a new key, and none of them were in the building. I had to wait for my roommate to let me in, but this place is incredibly unreliable. The front desk was closed, the office was closed, maintenance was closed, over 16 RAs are no where to be found and the 24/7 emergency phone number is a SCAM. First of all, the desk is supposed to be 24/7. This is what was advertised to me when I moved in. IT also has a 24/7 non-emergency phone number to help with lock outs and maintenance, but I don't know anyone who has ever called the number and had someone picked up. I have called that number 200+ times, and it has gone to voicemail every. Time. I've heard all the excuses, "I don't know why no one picked up," "the person who has the phone is actually overseas," "the person who is in charge of the number is taking an exam." It's all stupid. Everything in this building is a scam. And the worst thing about this place is the food. When you live in private housing, you are required to buy their private meal plan. Even though, I was told you could just purchase a university one instead, when I voiced that I wanted to change my meal plan, I was gaslighted into believing that that was never an option. It was, I had the email that stated so. But they want your money, so you have to buy their trash meal plan. You will not be able to dine at other halls, or have dining dollars to spend at their convenience stores. The food is inedible. During my year, the dining hall closed down MULTIPLE TIMES, and IT did nothing to provide their guests with food. I've heard rumors that the head chef quit, she spat in our food, left things Undercooked, etc. one time our dining hall closed for an entire WEEK, and gave us ONE MINUTE notice. We got to eat at university dining halls, and I started to feel joy again. The food is very much so undercooked, raw chicken, raw pork. If it's not undercooked, then it's cold. They'll also mix raw and cooked rice together, bc why not? And they also start closing down the dining hall 1-2 hours before it actually closes. Keep in mind that the dining hall is only open for 3 hours per meal. If you do not get food as soon as they open, you will not get food period. The staff is lazy. At the beginning of the year, they used to grill burgers, Phillies, or grilled cheeses for us. Now they pre-heat them, and leave them out to get cold so they don't have to do any work. They also never change out the soda machines so they're flat and flavorless. They run out of to go boxes and will not let you leave with a plate, so you are forced to eat there. Do not live here under any circumstances. If you have someone you genuinely hate, and wish nothing but misery on them, this is a great place for them to live. Otherwise, stay away. read more

This place sucks. Not only is this place expensive as hell for a mediocre living lifestyle, but everything is so busted. Our AC didn't work for weeks, our drains don't drain, our bathroom had mold, and things just fall apart. The worst part is that they turn of the AC so that they can save money. Such a greedy and selfish management. Me and my roommates couldn't even sleep last night because it was too damn hot. Absolutely outrageous how we pay rent, and we can't even get control over our AC. I've been kicked out of multiple classes because their internet crashes frequently. Overall, please do not choose this place to live. They need to make significant changes. read more

1 start too many for this place. Living here hasn't been the best experience, and here's why: 1. To get to your room, you will spend at least 6 minutes. First, waiting for the elevator. Okay, this may be excusable - it gets busy at times. But what isn't is the fact that I have to wait three minutes outside my door every day because the key cards fail to work. Every. Single. Time. 2. Way to expensive for what I get. So I don't have a meal plan, and I share a room and live with 4 girls total. For one-fourth of a bedroom, one bathroom, and one tiny kitchen, I pay $750. You can find apartments on Green Street for much cheaper - but again, I get it. It's private housing. 3. Maintenance. Toilet not working? Shower head acting weird? Well, wait it out because maintenance takes anywhere to 1-2 days to fix something. 4. Since we're on the topic of bathrooms - the shower is the dirtiest thing I've seen. Oh yeah, the lock on our bathroom door doesn't work either. 5. When I moved in, the walls were not painted. There was pencil drawn cartoon by my bed. How cute! I'll probably get charged for it when I move out. 6. Laundry machines: $5 to buy the card only. You have to add more money in to use the machines. Whereas - ya know - other places take quarters and don't charge you anything. And half the machines don't work. 7. Front desk: they're usually super nice, but why is there always a crowd by them when you need something? Living at IT was horrible. Bad food, terrible phony management. Elevators always broke. All of the cafeteria staff quit in 2012, and they started forcing RAs to work in the cafeteria unpaid. The management is just ABUSIVE to their staff. Do not live here. I wanted to live in a two bedroom apartment for two people but they had filled all of those units so they put me in a regular 4 person room and promised that I would only get one roommate if someone moved in, since I was paying for the price of a double. I am a sophomore living in Illini Tower this year with a group of friends. We are living in a corner room together, and we could not be happier with our choice. As I understand it, they are under new management as of very recent, which should explain bad reviews from previous years. New furniture has been put in, the amenities are good, employees could not be nicer, and the food is actually great. They even take requests from students for new menu items. In terms of maintenance, whenever we have submitted requests, a maintenance worker has shown up to make the repairs within a day or two, and does so with a smile on their face. The only reason for the four star review is that a large percentage of the students here are international (mostly Chinese, so the dorm actually lacks a bit of diversity), and it also lacks a social scene. I would imagine it would be a bit difficult to find a social circle here as a freshman, though not impossible, as I have met a few great people. It is clear that the management is aware of this, though, as they offer special events and activities fairly frequently. For sophomores and juniors looking to avoid the leasing hassle, and find a happy medium between dorm and apartment life, I'd highly recommend living here (especially if you lease with a group of friends). Just to clarify, I am a student writing this review on my own terms, and have not been asked to do so by any Illini Tower staff members. I just believe that at this point the highly negative reviews from previous years are misleading and irrelevant, due to the new management that has changed this place completely, and made living here quite pleasant. read more

Do not live here. Please, do not make the same mistake I did. It is way too expensive for what you get, and the meal plan only works for their dining hall, which means you're stuck with the tiny and (imo) unappetizing selection there. The maintenance people were slow to respond to issues and when they did they didn't always fix the problem. The walls are thin and I had serious noise issues, with people laughing and talking in the hall outside my place, as well as the floors above and below me, well into the early morning (I'm talking like from 1am to 4am there would just be constant noise). Talking to the people making the noise didn't work, and when I contacted the RA, and then the building managers, they did absolutely nothing. The weather stripping around my window was degraded, so there was always a cold breeze in my room. One of the elevators was almost always broken, so it would take 10-15 minutes just to get down to the lobby every morning. I will say that the location so close to the quad is convenient, but it really just is not worth it. read more

Beware- the misleading 5 star reviews are written by the Illini Tower staff themselves, and they are paying students to write 5 star reviews. Recently, Campus Living Villages (the company running IT) has hired a brand new general manager and a brand new maintenance, food and RA staff, but these people did little to nothing to improve the conditions of IT. Roy Myles, the new general manager, lied and mislead everyone about the improvements he was going to make once he starts his new job. In fact, if I were going to list all of the bad things about this place, I might as well write a book about it. I'll start with the obvious. First, this dump has got to be demolished. It is a worn-out building built in the 1960's that has not been renovated since. On the U of I campus, there are 2 dorms in the six pack that are rated "worst dorms in America". I visited those dorms and those were in better shape than IT!!!! The only part of the building that looks "nice" is the lobby area- which was renovated intentionally in order to trick visitors, prospective students and parents into signing a lease. The IT staff, when giving tours, use the SAME ROOM, which is never occupied so it looks brand new. But in reality, your room will most likely be in god-awful condition. On move-in day, I tested my water, heat and AC to see if it works. All 3 were broken and the maintenance crew took about a week to fix. My first week at IT was WITHOUT water and AC!!! Speaking of AC, heating and water, the maintenance crew shuts off the AC after Thanksgiving and never bothered to turn on the heat during winter. The entire winter, there was no heat, even that one day with -20F. That is illegal and on the grounds for a lawsuit. IT does not bother to shovel the sidewalks and the entrances when it snows, which again, is a violation of snow removal laws in Champaign. The reason for all this, is to SAVE MONEY, while leaving residents with literally nothing. The social life in this place is lacking and close to non-existent. 90% of the student body here is international Chinese students, many of whom prefer to study and are not as sociable as American students. I feel pity for them, as I want them to experience a diverse student body like in other dorms. (If someone here is from China and could translate my review to Chinese for them, that would be greatly appreciated. I want them to avoid this place as well). The food, is simply disgusting and poorly prepared. It literally looks like a 5 year old cooked it. The cafeteria crew consists of ex-convicts, felons and murderers. In essence, all the food is cheap, unhealthy and uncooked. A majority of the food is canned. The worst part is, THEY SERVE LEFTOVERS for 3 days straight!! Everything is deep-fried, and the salad bar is not fresh at all. One time, I noticed a bug in the lettuce. As one reviewer put it, "it gets old quick". Your credits don't roll over to the next semester, and it is a way to ensure that they make extra money off of you. The internet is poor, and unreliable. Service shuts down nearly every week for hours at a time. In the rooms, poor attempts at making it "look nice and modern" were made, but ended up failing. For example, a piece of unpainted plywood was nailed to the wall as a make-shift shelf. Also, TONS of hidden fees for the smallest of reasons. At the end of the semester, every resident gets charged a $25 "damage" fee, without explanation. The cost of this place is nearly 3 times the cost of regular university housing, which is a lot better. For both semesters you will pay: ~$16,000 for your room, $6,000 for a meal plan, $2,000 for parking privileges, nearly $1,000 for laundry and $50 in extra fines, which equate to a total of $25,000. That's 2x more than the cost of tuition!! With all the money that IT is taking in from residents, they refuse to use it for any building or service improvements. For example, the elevators are old, from the 70's, and are slow. Staircase use are forbidden. The hallways contains wall coverings, carpets and ceiling panels from the 70's. The rooms themselves are disgusting, and will likely have holes in the walls, mold and dust everywhere. The walls are thin and everything you say will be heard from your neighbors next door. You can hear even the toilets flushing next door and in the floors below and above you. This place has violated numerous building safety inspections in the past, but the management team never does anything about it. In essence, this place is appalling and sickening. If anyone knows a bit of American history in the early 1900's, imagine the poor and crowded tenements that urban factory workers lived in. IT would be equivalent to that. No wonder every year, IT has seen a decline in leases. Muckraking journalists in the early 1900's who exposed the public to the horrors and misery of crowded filthy apartments have successfully shut them down. Maybe U of I students should do the same to IT in 2015!! read more

Parents and students, please avoid Illini Tower, avoid Campus Living Villages properties, so you will avoid trouble and unhappiness ahead. Not to mention canned food, dirty rooms which other people already mentioned. My daughter and her 3 roommates also had to work on the toilet every time it was used. The worst part is Illini Tower managers only care about money. When I called Marta Kazmierczak (from Campus Living Villages) and signed for the lease, I asked about the $100 referral for my friend. She said there is no referral at all. I thought maybe the advertisement I just saw was expired. But later when I went back on their website, the $100 referral ad was still there! I didn't bother to ask again. After paying the processing fee, she asked for $350 nonrefundable fee. To date, I still don't know what that was for. These don't prompt me to writing a review until they forced me to pay hidden preexisting damages. A couple of weeks before the school ended, one girl moved a sofa looking for her stuff. She saw a fingertip sized dent on the wall behind the sofa. She reported to the building maintenance right away. No one responded. Two months after school finished everyone received $25 damage charge. $25 is nothing but I think I need to stand up against this greedy company and its employees. I talked to manager Eric Kappelmann (from Campus Living Villages) that the dent was behind the sofa and it was there before the girls moving in. There was no way that the girls damaged the wall behind the sofa while everywhere else was all right. They argued that the contract we signed requiring us to check preexisting damages before moving in. I told them the damage was behind the sofa. The contract doesn't say we need to move sofa, beds, cabinets and other furniture to inspect. Will anyone move the furniture to inspect the preexisting damage? They charged the students excessively for the poor job they did when the previous residents moved out. When I disputed this charge with them, Agatha Thomas (from Campus Living Villages) threatened to send the charge to the collection agency and she did and she won $25.They won $25 ($100 in total), but they got their bad name. Illini Tower (Campus Living Villages) and BYL Collection Services are working together. If they want to charge you anything, you have to pay since you don't want your credit to be ruined by Campus Living Villages. read more

It's a shame that can't give negative stars. Starting from basement, ceiling drops disgusting stuff on your car 24/7. In the laundry room, three out of six driers are usual broken. Everything is cheap. The corporate offices are looking to squeeze as much profit out of the building as they can and will do it at everyone's expense. Anonymous A is absolutely correct about his review of Illini Tower. 1. The accomodations are awful. You've got 4 people (in most cases) stuffed into a room the size of a hotel room with 1 bathroom, 1 efficiency kitchen (old too). There is NO door on the bathroom separating the toilet from the rest of the bathroom, only a door on the outside so TWO people can NOT accomodate the bathroom at one time (unless you like to watch your roomie doing his business). The bedrooms in most cases are for 4 (split plan with 2 to a room. There is hardly enough room for one yet alone two in these rooms. The desks are tiny, the beds are small and AA is correct , there is no room for even books on the bookshelves. 2. Food is dreadful 3. elevators slow and old 4. front desk acts like they are doing you a favor when you ask for help. 5. Not enough garbage containers outside in the common areas to accomodate all the garbage kids generate. Essentially, this place is like a 50 year old hotel/motel that has outlived its usefulness. Here's my advice, TOUR this place BEFORE you rent there. Don't be suckered into looking at a "model" See the real deal where you'll be PUT and you'll quickly change your mind. read more

I haven't been living here for long, but in comparison to other option in the area, this place is fantastic. It's set up like an apartment with a kitchen and living room so I don't feel like a refugee in a one room cell. I do share the bedroom, but it's laid out so we aren't in each others space. Plus! I get air conditioning! It's an older building, but I know they reciently put a lot of money into updating it and it shows. The washing machines that can text you when your laundry is done are pretty high tech and I'm learning to play pool in the game room. I also love the private movie theater (and so do my friends when I invite them over for a movie night). The dinning room food is ok and the office staff are friendly, but I really love all the social events they have...bingo and casino night. I even hear they're going to have an music competition in the Spring. For a campus housing option, IT is a pretty great place to live. read more

This is the worst place to live. The staff at the front desk are rude and will hardly assist you with anything. The walls are sooo thin you can literally hear everything from outside and they can probably hear you too. Don't make me get started on the food, it's god awful. The rooms overall are expensive and the elevators take years. It's probably the least social dorm on campus. Although they have events and activities, they are lame and don't expect people to come if there aren't any freebies given out. The only good thing about IT is how talented they are at putting on a show. They will make you feel like this dorm is A1 but in reality, you will regret every moment spent here. Thus far I have enjoyed my stay at IT and through the process of being an IT guide I met a lot of great people. So far it's a great place to stay to my knowledge, it's a very clean building unlike most apartments and dorms around the campus and most of the staff are very polite and helpful. It is also within reasonable walking distance of the main quad and if you need to go farther there are bus stops not to far from here. Overall I give a 4 stars because I have not been here long enough to give a higher or lower rating. read more

The building gives off a classy vibe, but once they get you signed into the contract ur screwed. The contract is for a year, so if you want to move out at the semester, your not going anywhere. Whether IT is worth the price is questionable. The internet is slow and on occasion will stop working all together. The food, which they claim is the best on campus, is terrible. It is all fried, crazy amounts of grease, everything is out of a box and has no flavor, and it gets very repetitive. The cafeteria staff is terrible. The cooks could care less. Half the time they sit around watching TV, and if you have a question good luck. The cafeteria managers are the only ones who really do things if you have an issue. Also, they started a new rule where you can only swipe one friend in. This is basically just to make sure you don't use up all the meals in your plan, aka extra profit for them. Maintenance is really nice, but never get anything done. Half the time, I swear I could fix things better than they could. If you do want something fixed, your better of going straight to their office instead of filling out a maintenance request because you will end up doing that 50 more times. ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!! Literally everything they do is centered on how they can get more money. If anything goes wrong on a weekend, they wont be fixed until week day working hours because they don't want to spend extra money on overtime pay. They just remodeled. By remodeling, they mean they took out old furniture that was really nice at one point, and put in cheap shit. The couches are pleather and they aren't comfortable. If you sit on one end of a cushion, the other one slants wayyy up. The TVs are nice. The theater that they will use to sell the building: always broken. I have no clue why, but there is just always something wrong with it. It looks better than it is, trust me. Building events are nice. It is the only thing they actually put good money into. The building is not that social, but with a good RA you will become close with the few people on your floor. The problem is that people have everything they need in their rooms, so there is no need to hang out in the lobby unless they want to meet people. The elevators are slow, and usually broken. The staff is alright. Friendly for the most part. OH! and as i stated before: they are all about the money, if they get more spring leases, they will condense rooms. Aka, you could be asked to just pack up your stuff and move to a new room. Unfortunately, this is stated in the lease so you cant do anything about it. Make sure you read that contract! I have to agree with the comments by " Anonymous A. ". He/she is right on the mark on everything and the " response " by the IT staff person is cookie cutter at the best. I had the misfotune of having to live there this past school year because my father had gone to the U of I and had lived there so he had told me how great it was. I guess 20 years ago it was but when my parents came to visit they were both shocked that it looked exactly the same and when we went to eat my Dad was amazed that they still had the same exact menu they did when he stayed here. When I ask the employees about why don't we get different/new menus I am told over and over that the Head Chef, if you can really call him that because whenever I come into eat he is always in the office place reading the paper ( that of course is when he is not in the kitchen yelling at the cooks calling them stupid ) , doesn't like change and if you even bring it up he get's mad and tries to get you fired and yells at you. The rooms are also horrible . The furniture is so bad the junk man won't take it and the " remodeling " they are doing is a band-aid on the gun shot and the band-aid looks horrible. read more

I decided to live at Illini Tower because of the proximity to the quad and the apartment style rooms. But Illini Tower is the worst dorm on campus, everything the management does is in the name of saving money. The lobby and lounges in the building give visitors a false sense of what the building is actually like. Air conditioning is turned off after thanksgiving even if it gets really hot out, elevators are constantly broken or out of service, the heat is not on when it is -10F outside (which i think is actually against the law), the windows are very drafty, and the whole building smells like old cooking oil since they never clean. The rooms are disgusting and there is not internet in the rooms on the sides of the building, not a slow connection but no internet at all. Even while there is internet in the floor lounge it is extremely slow and unreliable. The walls and ceiling are not solid so you can hear and smell everything around you, and there are mysterious holes where the wall meets the ceiling. In a friend's room there is a hole in the wall right above where his pillow should be. They also never shovel or salt the sidewalks and on the property while its snowing, or ever shovel out the bike area.
