You can fill your belly with delightful traditional Sicilian fare from La Lanterna. The courses are a la carte, so you can choose where you begin (unlike many other places with no menu where they just bring food and you don't know what's happening). They also helpfully have a menu in English (!) so you can figure out what you are eating. Antipasti and bruschetta to begin, or skip to the pasta dishes; you will find some that are familiar (spaghetti carbonara or penne Arabians) and you will find something new (spaghetti montanari, my choice-so good, or spaghetti alla caprese, my husband's selection). For second dishes, there is a wide selection of meat dishes, such as veal scallopini, Milanese cutlet, or pork chops. Then there's the pizza menu. There's about 30 different pizzas! They also have several sandwiches. There are side dishes (side salads and French fries) and finally, desserts (gelato, semifreddo). There is wine, beer, soda. Tip: order to share. Portions are huge and designed for sharing. We are learning... The restaurant was actually crammed full of the locals. You could literally eat here every night of your trip and have something different and delicious. You cannot go wrong at La Lanterna.

Eat where the locals eat has always been my motto. So on a recent Sunday night in Palermo, I took a…read morefriend's suggestion and checked out Il Cambusone. They open at 7pm which is when I arrived to find myself alone in the restaurant. But by the time I left at 9, the place was full. We were directed to pick out any table by the two guys at the door. Clearly this is a family run operation as was proven to me when the two wives and their kids showed up around 8:30. The wives began to run the host stand and check people out while the men took orders and ran the food. As I often do, I left it up to the owners to suggest items from the menu. For the appetizers we went with a variety plate of panelle and some eggplant type relish. This was very good. The other appetizer of "sardine balls" must be an acquired taste as I didn't care for it but my dining companion enjoyed them. For our main course I had the spaghetti and clams which was delicious and my friend went with the lobster filled ravioli. Know if you order this last dish that you must like curry as it uses a lot of it for seasoning. All of that plus a few glasses of house wine and a couple of beers came to about 75 EU which seemed reasonable for the amount of food. They take reservations so if you want to go later than I did, you may want to call ahead cuz this place gets busy as the night goes on!
