How many and how recently have you performed this specific procedure? 2. WHAT exactly will surgery entail? 3. HOW LONG I will be immobilized? 4. WHEN will I start hand therapy and WHO will I see for therapy? 5. What will a good result look like? I had tendon transfer surgery to repair a ruptured EPL tendon. At our initial meeting, Dr. Diao stated assuredly that 90% I could expect very good function post-surgery and be able to perform all my usual activities well. I unfortunately trusted and deferred to his 'expertise', did not get 2nd opinions or ask the above questions. A year and a half post-surgery, I still have adhesions, significant limitations in thumb function I am completely unable to lift my thumb away from my palm (retropulsion). Some of this is due to an apparently POORLY EXECUTED SURGERY (he did not create the necessary tension in the tendon for me to activate the muscle to straighten and lift my thumb) and the inexcusable LACK OF NECESSARY POST-SURGERY TREATMENT. Therapy after EPL tendon transfer surgery is essential to protect the healing tissue, reduce adhesions, retrain brain to use the donor muscle for a new thumb movement, and restore hand function, while also protecting the integrity of the repair. It turns out that Dr. Diao does NOT believe in hand therapy. You can listen to one of the videos on his website where he says moving your hand in a bag of rice is preferable to hand therapy. I was kept completely immobilized 24-7 in one static position in a commercial split for 5-6 weeks, then told me to just go use my hand and only at my request did he hand me a list of locations for therapy. It took another 5 weeks to get an appointment (now 10 weeks post-surgery). The first therapist was not knowledgeable about my surgery and a complete waste of time.. At my multiple requests Dr. Diao was not able provide a specific place or name of an experienced hand therapist to address the concerns that I repeatedly shared with him. I should have immediately been referred to and started seeing a hand therapist WITHIN 2-3 WEEKS POST SURGERY who would have placed me in a CUSTOMIZABLE SPLINT allowing for adjustments in position, controlled movement to prevent severe joint stiffness and scar tissue buildup. I should have started doing passive movements with my thumb, gradually increasing to active mobilization. I should have been given progressive exercises to safely rebuild muscle strength and coordination. This process all should have started within 3 weeks post-surgery. NONE of this happened. I eventually called another doctor who immediately referred me to an experienced hand therapist. It was a now a full 6 months post-surgery before I began therapy. I am grateful that I did eventually got some pain reduction and improvement in function, but it is far from a good outcome. I am still completely unable to retropulse my thumb away from my palm, still always have some degree of pain or discomfort and limited function. The combination of a poorly executed procedure (He did not create the right amount of tension in the tendon) and the inexcusable lack of appropriate post-surgery follow-up has left me with continued adhesions, pain, and a poorly functioning thumb. I am now consulting with another doctor at the Buncke Clinic to see if at this late stage there is some way to improve my function. Do your due diligence before proceeding with any doctor. Do not just trust credentials and reviews. Many reviews are curated. One star for a friendly and helpful office staff.

My shoulder had become progressively worse from the occasional subluxation to full dislocations that required trips to the emergency room. I had become extremely guarded of all movement and it made examination difficult. He was incredibly understanding and patient. He took time to understand my concerns and make sure I felt comfortable. I had my surgery during the height of Covid because it became clear my shoulder was so unstable I could not delay any more. On the day of my surgery there was a mix up with my Covid test which was required for surgery and we had to reschedule -- Dr. Feeley could not have been more understanding. The surgery itself went perfectly. From pain management to physical therapy--the team at UCSF was great. Dr. Feeley used an app to communicate post-surgery and it was great and easy to manage. Most importantly-- five years later I am fully confident in my shoulder. I no longer hesitate when putting on a jacket or taking my kids swimming. I know that it's important to write these Yelp reviews, as there's no other place to read about the experiences others have had with doctors. Dr. Feeley operated on a torn rotator cuff for me - I had tried everything to not have surgery, lots of PT, a couple of cortisone shots - but ultimately I am SO glad I had the surgery - no more pain, great range of motion. Don't get me wrong - the pain was "impressive" immediately following surgery, and the amount of time keeping the arm stabilized in a sling meant a lot of things were hard to do without help- getting dressed, driving, cooking, etc. And it took a lot of work with a physical therapist and a home exercise program to get to where I needed to be. Dr. Feeley is honest about this - he will tell you that it will easily take up to a year before you're just right. All that work and inconvenience is completely worth having no pain. Feel free to send me a message here on yelp if you'd like more insights into the surgery and recovery period - here's a pro-tip for you: Post surgery, I found that having ponchos that you can just pop over your head was the perfect alternative for ventures outside when putting on a coat or a shirt was nearly impossible.

Ironically, I was…read morescheduled to take a week of vacation because I was planning my to go to Disney Land and finally explore the new Star Wars Land and Tiana's Bayou adventure. Instead, I needed a neurosurgeon. See, I use my hands for my job and I am hypermobile. I think this makes me prone to literally being being out of shape, and apparently there is a name for this rare, but somewhat-common-in-Koreans, arthritis: OPLL. Well, I've had neck pain pretty much my whole adult life and constant cervicogenic headaches. I've learned how to maintain myself for the most part but on August 16, 2024, I woke up and couldn't really lift my right arm. It kinda hung there limply by my side, but I just thought my shoulder must be exceptionally stiff from being overworked. I reverted to my routine of resting, stretching and applying heat and taking NSAIDs. It marginally got better but five days later at work, I couldn't lift my arm at all and had to use my left hand to keep my right arm up at work. So I went to the Parnassus ER, where (although I was gaslit by a very grumpy nurse who is burned out and I just appreciate showed up to her thankless job in the ER so people like me could get care) the triaging NP diagnosed my sudden neuro weakness and consulted neurosurgery. As you can tell from the photos, my spinal cord was being squished by a herniated disc at C5/C6. For YEARS, I've been having chronic pain and increased neurological deficits, just thinking I was aging and becoming middle aged. After a course of medrol and a new C5/C6 artificial disc replacement, I have a new lease on life. New neck, new life! I am so appreciative to Dr. Tan and his team for explaining my condition (as thoroughly as neurosurgeon can lol) and treating it promptly. He took my job into account, as well as my personal health, and he chose the best route for me - which was to remove the destroyed disc and replace it at that one level minimally evasively but not fusing the posterior/back part of that neck that had OPLL arthritis. Although Dr Tan warned me I'd still have posterior pain since he went in anteriorly and didn't correct the posterior compression, I got much better sensation in that part of my neck so the posterior compression is actually a lot better now too with surgery, PT, personal training and strict personal ergonomic adherence. I just had my one year follow up with Dr Tan's clinical fellow, and I really appreciated the explanation and care. I am so grateful to UCSF ER, neurosurgery, and peri/surgical teams taking care of me. From the house staff who shared with me how she lost her sense of smell that devastated her when she was an aspiring cook, to the resident who was working over 24 hours and still treated me with dignity and respect - I will never forget the simple kindness afforded to me in the hardest of times. That was the worst night of my life, but I wouldn't have wanted to have it anywhere else but at UCSF.

I couldn't lay flat on my back for more than 10 seconds. Dr Tan looked at my MRI and said I needed surgery. I am 2 months out from a L3 to S1 spinal fusion. No complications, very good instructions from Dr Tan and his office staff, and wonderful follow up. I felt looked after. Highly recommend.
