My 13-year-old daughter is a competitive swimmer and has been dealing with a swim-related shoulder injury for nearly a year. This has been quite an elusive injury, the cause of pain not obvious or clear cut, resulting in a lengthy exploratory process. After an MRI, an X-ray, a CT scan, and consulting with FOUR reputable orthopedic specialists, we have found a doctor in whom we have the greatest confidence. Yesterday, we met with Dr. Brian Feeley and a fellow working under him at UCSF. I cannot rave enough about our experience from the first point of contact at the receptionist desk to the last, with Dr. Feeley. Everyone we dealt with was amazing! This is the first time that we feel completely assured that we are on the right track in determining the source of chronic pain in her shoulder. Dr. Feeley was exceptional in every way: professional, direct, decisive, well-researched, reassuring, kind..the right balance between knowledgeable and compassionate. We left with a plan of action that finally feels right to us. We return in two weeks for an MRI with dye (to look for possible labrum tear--no other doctor has suspected this yet but it makes so much sense). If no tear is evident, he'll do an ultrasound of the shoulder and biceps tendon, the predominant source of her pain. In a nutshell, we appreciate his non-invasive approach; we appreciate that he will continue the exploratory process until we figure this out because nearly a year of rest, ice, Advil, and PT have not alleviated her pain. We feel a great deal of hope that we will find the answers needed to finally bring about healing. My daughter is so ready to live fully again and return to the sports and activities she loves! read more
