Expectations vs Reality - I have never been this embarrassed…read more I ordered the White Noise bouquet as a 30th birthday gift for my best friend - a very special occasion. I even emailed the florist beforehand asking them to take extra special care with this order. What was delivered looked nothing like the bouquet shown on their website. And while I understand that no two bouquets are ever identical, this was not a variation - it was a disgrace. Ugly, sloppy, completely inelegant, and absolutely not worth the £110+ I paid. I have never in my life been so embarrassed to send someone close to me such a terrible gift, signed with my own name. I raised the issue with Grace & Thorn, but they simply washed their hands of it. Their excuses? That the photo was "blurry," taken "from the wrong angle," and that their arrangements are "front-facing." The audacity - considering the photo came from their own courier! At the same time, they insist the bouquet passed their "quality control," which clearly failed. They have no photographic proof of what they claim to have sent. To make matters worse, they even had the nerve to ask me to send photos of the bouquet - fully aware that this was a gift for my friend. As if I should inconvenience her and ask her to stage photos just to prove what is already obvious. Looking back, I regret not paying more attention to their poor reviews beforehand - they were not wrong. This whole experience was shameful and disappointing. Grace & Thorn not only delivered a product that was nothing like advertised, but also demonstrated zero accountability afterwards. I will never order from them again - and I strongly advise anyone looking for professionalism, quality, and honesty to look elsewhere.

Initially, the courier marked the order as "returned" due to an alleged failed delivery attempt, yet no one had called or made contact. I chased this up and was met with further confusion. On Friday, the same story: another "attempted delivery" which, upon requesting proof, turned out to be a lie. By Saturday--two days after the flowers were meant to arrive--there was still no sign of them. I eventually agreed to a refund, only to be told it wouldn't be processed until the following week because "the right person wasn't available" to handle it. When I chased again on Monday, I was met with the same response: no one available to help. Finally, on Tuesday morning, I received an email offering only a refund on the delivery charge. I called again, and while on the phone, I fortunately confirmed an order for Christmas flowers--only to be told they couldn't deliver these either, this time blaming an IT glitch. The entire process has been a shambles: unreliable, disorganised, and deeply frustrating. Grace & Thorn's inability to fulfill promises or provide adequate customer service has been appalling. If you're looking for flowers, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere.

Hustling and bustling, with crowds enticed not just by the gorgeous flowers but also the healthy green houseplants and the shockingly reasonable prices, Columbia Road Flower Market is the place to be on Sundays. Getting a late start (compared to others), my walk from the Elizabeth Line to Colombia Road had me salivating; it seemed that everyone coming in the opposite direction held beautiful bouquets, thriving houseplants, or both. Later in the day people were leaving with their arms so full of oversized greenery that watching them navigate their way down the street was comical. So: the prices are great, the selection is astounding, and everything looks fresh and heathy. Only a city with a population the size of London could pull off such a great and bustling flower market. Getting here is a cinch on the new Elizabeth Line and the route from there to Columbia Road is well-marked. The market theoretically closes at 2 p.m. but many sellers were still hawking discounted product past that time. Come early or late, but do come. It's a crowded, colorful experience for which America really has no equivalent.

I sadly don't have a garden, but I love dropping in just to browse. They have a small outside section with a good variety of plants which vary with the season. It's almost like visiting an actual garden. Inside is also immaculately presented, with a small but good range of seeds, pretty pots, garden ornaments, etc. The staff are friendly too. I really wish I could go in for more than a few seeds for a window box According to their website they've been awarded Garden Centre of the year 2007 by the Horticultural Trade, in recognition of their innovative use of a small space. Can't be bad if other Garden Centres recognise how good they are! Their website is http://n1gc.co.uk/

Recently however, I've had a revelation and I am now growing not one, but six (!) different herbs. Although off-put occassionally by rouge squirrels having a nosey, last weekend I successfully grew them to the height that repotting was required. Not up for treking out to one of the mega gardening centres, I was very pleased to discover that only 10 minutes walk away was the beautiful North One! This little garden centre is small but perfectly formed. As well as stock a range of pot plants and herbs, they have every type of seed, soil, pot and cane imaginable. Prices are however, a bit more steep than you would get in one of the chains. I was a bit taken a back to discover that a cute purple bench, just big enough for two but no more was selling for £250. Needless to say I left that one to someone that might be feeling a bit more flash than myself! Now I've put my gardening kitty to use I can safety assure you that Mr Mint, Lord Thyme, Miss Chives, Sir Sage, Prof Parsely and Queen Rosemary are looking better than ever! Four terracotta pots, soil, plant food, and a few other bits and pieces came to around £35. Ok, it's a bit more than I wanted to pay but the whole day was lovely. No long commute. No chain garden centre. Just a lovely walk around Islington followed by a day of getting my hands dirty. Perfect!
