This church houses the famed Capilla del Rosario, a wonderous gilded chapel.
Iglesia Santo Domingo is a few blocks off of the Zocalo, along the Avenue Cinco de Mayo, a busy retail street with lots of shoe shops, and right around the corner from the Street of Sweets. This church has a lovely facade, towering over the other businesses along this bustling thoroughfare.
Inside the church, it's peaceful and quiet. The church is magnificently adorned with gold, statues and exquisite paintings. Head down the main aisle to the altar, and take a left, you'll see the amazing Capilla del Rosario. For more information on this Puebla must-see, check out the separate reviews of the place.
The church has all these little alcoves over the alter, in which are the twelve disciples, and some other religious figures. The church is a Baroque style, with lots of exquisite flourishes, amazingly intricate designs, and cool artwork that you won't see anywhere else. This church is one of the most elaborate that I have ever seen- the Capilla del Rosario is worth a trip on its own.
Within the church is a little gift shop, which sells rosaries, statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, and lots of medallions and icons of holy figures. The nuns working the gift shop were pleasant and helpful.
The church seems a bit ostentatious for the place- there seems to be enough gold in this place to make millionaires out of everyone who attends this church, but I guess they seem to know what they're doing with their donations.
Outside the church was a beggar asking for alms. He's certainly in the right place.
I recommend checking out this church, as there's lots to see, and admission is free! read more
