This chapel is inside the Church of Santo Domingo. When you enter the church, go all the way to the altar, and hang a left. It's a huge chapel, all gilded in gold.
When we went, there were heavy gilded gates preventing us from going into the chapel, so we could just peer through the gates to see the inside. A guard reminds you not to touch the gilded gate.
I've never seen so much gold in one room- every single surface was covered in it. It shone like Fort Knox. There's not one plain surface in the entire room- every inch is covered in fine detail of carving of angels, apostles, curlie-ques, flourishes, and exquisite details, all gilded. In the center of the chapel is an altar, all gold, to the Virgin Mary. It sits beneath a giant dome, which allows natural light into the chapel, making everything shine.
If Christ was all about giving alms to the poor, and there's a verse about a camel shall have an easier time passing through the eye of a needle than a rich man getting into heaven, you have to wonder about all the gold that's in this chapel. Couldn't that gold have been better spent on helping the needy? It just seems ostentatious and gaudy to cover every single inch of a chapel in gold.
This really is a majestic sight to behold, and certainly worth the short walk from the Zocalo. Right down the way from the Church of Santo Domingo is the street of sweets, which is also worth checking out. read more
