When I heard Virgilio Martinez opened a restaurant in the city I'm visiting, I had to go. Don't go in expecting it to be like Central - it's completely different but has its own charm. Ichu is less experimental, but the fusion-y Peruvian cuisine is doubtlessly inspired. The cocktails are fun - the pre-dinner ones are worth a try. The Vida is a seafoam green delight, the El Niño Effect is a nice mix of pisco and sake, and the Pisco Sour has pisco-infused saffron which is pure genius. For the food: start with a ceviche. We tried the Colleccion, which gives you a sampler of three: the Classico with my favorite sauce, the Tomate which is lighter, and the Pez Limon with the creamiest, meltiest hamachi. The Uni is pretty good too, but the scallops steal the show. From sea to land, changing it up with a few skewers of Corazon. The veal is quality, but eat it quickly - the charcoal won't keep it warm. Their kitchen has one heck of a saucier - this TacuTacu Chupe is like fireworks. The calamari and prawns are perfectly cooked, but it's all about the rice and beans that soak up the seafood drippings and are covered in a creamy wonder-sauce. Cerdo Amazonico: know thy audience. Pork belly with a good sauce is always going to win in China. Dessert is next and last. The Tres Leches is sweet and rich, the cake of the day is a coffee and cocao, a perfect slice. The Ecosistema de Peru is enough for four people, and food imitates art in an edible pod full of ruby chocolate mousse. I wasn't sure a Peruvian restaurant could hang in Hong Kong, but I should have known better than to underestimate Virgilio Martinez. Here he brings the best of Peru and presents it in a way that is artistic and absolutely delicious!

New place recommended as the place to go in Hong Kong (Feb 2019) - the original place located in Lima belongs to the top 50 restaurants in the world run by chef Virgilio Martinez. Mixed impression but more positive We had a table reservation and we arrived around 10 minutes earlier. The waiter asked if we would mind to wait at the terrace. The terrace is quite big and nice. But I had the feeling that asking the guests going to the terrace is part of the business model to generate higher sales on drinks. A couple placed next to us at the terrace, reminded the waiter that their reservation is already 30 minutes overdue and that they want to leave, than suddenly their table was ready. We had to wait around 30 minutes until we could finally go to our table. Let's get to the food: When you see picture with something looks like burned black - it's actually charcoaled and a really good taste The charcoaled Avocado was a highlight - filled with tomato sauce and a semi cooked egg. We also ordered a nice salad and chicken. All was good. The chicken sticks - I would say, are a little but overpriced

    No thanks raw chicken

Pretty terrible. Underseasoned, undercooked, and cold. Bad service. But like, 'bless your heart' service, just bad. Thanks anyway, but for $200 us? No, thanks, have AAA Cooking School tryouts on someone else's dime. Avoid.

If you ask me on any given evening, what I would like to eat there and then, I would very rarely…read more(if ever) say Peruvian food. It's just not the sort of thing that we eat is it (unless you are in Peru)? Well, Mayta in LKF is fast changing my mind about that. It opened up in what use to be the BBQ pork restaurant, which irked me as I love BBQ pork. However, Mayta is actually a very welcome replacement. Let's start at the top; the first thing you will want to do is get a round os Pisco Sours in. They have a great variety of flavours and mixes of this traditional alcoholic beverage, and they make them well. Just the right amount of sour, just the right amount of kick. Forget the wine and beer, just stick to these bad boys all night. Now, the food. If you are not familiar with Peruvian food, Google it. However, my recommendations are as follows... Start with the cerviches, this is essentially Peruvian sushi, with big chunks of raw salmon, tuna and/or mackerel, steeped in lime and indigenous spices. These are great for sharing, so get the "platter" and sample all of them. I always follow this with the suckling pork "stew", sooooo good! The restaurant is large and spacious, so you don't feel to hemmed in, but the decor and ambience make for a nice intimate setting. The staff are great, super friendly and really efficient. The manager is particularly nice, and always greets with a smile and few pleasantries. Book if you are coming at the weekend or on Super Monday, as it can get busy. During mid week, it is often completely dead, so you will have more luck with a walk-in then.

I only discovered Mayta this year but I'm already a fan. For those wanting to visit Mayta this July, heads up; Peru's National Day is on the 28th. Mayta's interior has a very homey feel; wooden furnishings with intricate designs and dark wood maroon tables and chairs while the house music pumps out funky Latin American jams. One thing I noticed off the bat is the dedicated ceviche station, for those who can't get enough of it. Piscos (pomade brandy) are also a big hit here and undoubtedly serves an extensive menu of pisco. The a la carte menu is divided into Peruvian tapas, skewers, ceviche, wok and salads, specials and desserts. Because ceviche is a specialty here, we decided to order the clasico, made with sea bass and marinated in leche de tigre (which translates to tiger's milk - didn't need a dictionary for that one). It tasted sweet and salty at the same time - a fantastic combination. For the tapas, we chose the pan con chicharron which tasted like a steamed pandesal but with crunchy pork belly and a spicy and garlicky aoili sauce. I'm not saying it wasn't good but it didn't taste that great either. Dessert fared better due to the suspiro de limena, a sumptuous offering of dulce de leche at the bottom, a creamy meringue with port wine at the top, and the surprisingly good taste of olive oil ice cream. Some of the staff were Latin American, which was a pleasant surprise, and I could bust out the little Spanish I knew. They were truly friendly and obviously knowledgeable about the different dishes. My dining experience in Mayta wasn't what I expected but it certainly wasn't bad to deter another visit. Should I look for Peruvian food next time, I know where to go.

There were three of us, and we ordered 2 things. I remembered eating Lomo Saltado back when I visited Peru, so that was a must for me. The entree was very good. The steak pieces were superb. The other dish, I can't remember it's name, had fries, sausage, sauces, and chicken on top. The chicken was nicely roasted, but we just thought it was ok. I wouldn't say this place is authentic Peruvian food, but it would certainly scratch the itch. Worth coming and visiting.

A lot of the Peruvian places in Hong Kong are a little more upscale but Matt doesn't really see Peruvian like that. Finally, we found a more casual spot on HK and it didn't disappoint. Pollo a la brasa is a Peruvian classic and specialty. Spit roasted chicken. The chicken was spiced really well and roasted to perfection. Hot, juicy, and moist inside. Highly recommended. We also got the choripan. A spiced sausage sandwich that's a common, casual meal. I think of it as more of an Argentinian meal but I think Peru has some as well. Make sure you spot here for some good chicken. We didn't have reservations but managed to snag seating near the bar with a view of the front dining room. For drinks I asked our server what a popular drink was and he said the Smoking Gun which was their version of a Negroni (Lapsang infused Bulldog gin, campari, chocolate bitters). I ordered the Tokyo Affair (prosecco, acai liqueur, lychee juice, cherry blossom). The Smoking Gun came in a dramatic Japanese wooden chest and when you opened it up, it literally had smoke coming out of it. My friend liked his drink and I liked my "girlie" Tokyo Affair - sweet and bubbly. We ordered: Lomo Saltado "El Taco" (Stir fry beef & veggies with coriander chimichurri and crispy gyoza paste): This was a very small taco but very tasty. The thin beef strips were seasoned well. Ki-mo-chi Chicken: Karage style chicken thighs were slightly spicy and perfectly fried. It came with a dipping mayo that was delicious. Spicy Hamachi Roll (yellowtail with kiuri garnished with fried shiso and chives): This came with a spicy mint chimichurri sauce. Yellowtail tasted fresh and the shiso added a crunchy texture to the roll. LL Loin (Grilled lamb loin with apple puree, mint salad and pickled onion): Lamb was super tender and very good. Service was attentive in the beginning but it took a while to find our server as the night wore on. Not surprising since the restaurant got really crowded. The manager was a good looking Italian guy who knew what he was doing and at some point it was someone's birthday and he came out wearing a unicorn head (which frankly would have freaked me out but as an observer was kinda neat). I think that this is a great place to meet people and catch up over some great food.

The fried chicken was really awesome. Sweet, crispy with a little bit of spice. Dipping sauce was not needed as the chicken was really tasty. The fried peppers were also really good. The ceviche was pretty bland. For a Peruvian and Japanese place this is what I expect to be good. This can't compare to a half decent place in Tokyo or Lima. Quite disappointing. The mains were ok. Not bad but not really good either. The miso cod is what you would expect and executed properly. The chicken skewers were dry and does not bring memories of a yakatori restaurant. If I didn't eat the dessert I would have given four stars. The food is three star level but the environment and atmosphere is cool and would bring it up to four stars. Unfortunately I did have the dessert. The cake was one of the worst desserts I have had in a restaurant. If I went to 7 eleven and bought a mass produced prepackaged cake It would be debatable which one would be better.
