Delicious first breakfast from the buffet!
    Raheem A.

After a relaxing five day stay in Madeira, my wife and I headed to Lagos to continue our mini-tour of Portugal. For this leg of our trip, we would be staying at the Iberostar Selection Lagos Algarve. When our Uber driver pulled up to the front of the resort, I knew that my wife had aced the exam (she is an all-inclusive resort whisperer). Upon entering the lobby, we were greeted by the clean lines of an upscale business that you may see featured in the latest episode of Architectural Digest. The employee at the front desk warmly greeted us as he started the check-in process. After providing us with a brief breakdown of the resort's amenities, he handed us our room keycards. I'm not sure if this was protocol (or if we just looked thirsty), but he also handed us both a glass of sparkling wine to enjoy as we made our way to our room. When you enter the room, you have to insert one of your keycards into a slot to turn on the electricity in the room (this is an energy saving approach that a lot of European hotels use). Once we turned on the lights, we were greeted by a very clean room complete with a fairly large hot tub (I'm still disappointed that I was only able to use it once), a refrigerator (for keeping two bottles of wine cool), and a beautiful view of the nearby ocean. The food at this resort is top notch! During our five day stay, we had almost no complaints about the food (there was one breakfast that seemed a bit off) at the buffet. Pretty much any popular food is provided at the brunch: seafood, pork, beef, chicken, salads, potatoes, fresh fruit, cheeses (I love a wide-array of cheeses), vegetables, etc. With the exception of breakfast (they have a self-serve sparkling wine area if you want to make mimosas), staff does a great job of ensuring that your glass remains full of delicious Portuguese wine. Outside of the entrance to the buffet area is an activity board with the activities for the day. One activity that we participated in on a regular basis, was the water aerobics that was held at the smaller pool (there is also a kiddie pool in this area). It was fun taking a break from the traditional gym, and being lead through a pretty challenging workout by two engaging employees. On our last full day, we just happened to stumble upon staff setting up a soap workshop. We never thought making soap could be so fun (or maybe it was the vodka tonics adding a layer of excitement)! Later that evening, we enjoyed the sounds of a really talented cover band. The smaller pool where the water aerobics classes took place, just happened to be the pool that we favored for relaxing and enjoying adult beverages. In the same area, there is a gazebo with seating and a walk-up bar. Whenever we needed a drink, there was always a friendly employee there ready to make a stiff beverage. Also, usually there was some great tunes being played via XM Satellite radio. In comparison to the larger pool without music and a crowd, this pool area seems more tailored for folks that want to relax and not be "seen." Now I want to speak to something that has absolutely nothing to do with the resort; however, I feel like it's necessary that I warn potential patrons about something that my wife and I experienced. As Black Americans (I cannot speak to the experience of other racial/ethnic groups) from the moment we stepped foot onto the resort, we were receiving intense stares from other patrons. Whether we were simply enjoying a drink near the bar, walking through the resort, eating at the buffet...folks were staring! Regardless of the cause of the stares (fascination, hate, lust), it's a bit unsettling to be enjoying your holiday only to look over and see someone making unwavering eye contact. I bring this up for two reasons: As a warning to fellow Black Americans who may be considering booking a stay at any resort in Lagos (we did not experience this in Lisbon), and to issue a friendly reminder to the demographics that were staring...it's not nice to stare, and if you must, at least speak to the person that you're staring at... :) Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Iberostar Selection Lagos Algarve. One thing that I really want to highlight about this resort is how receptive they are to feedback. For example, early in our stay my wife complained (I use this word lightly) about the lack of a potato option (there was a survey that staff was distributing during dinner). The following morning, there was an assortment of potato options available...now that's what I call customer service aka listening to your customer and implementing feedback (yes I know that it is not realistic to implement all customer feedback)! I want to give a special shout out to the following staff: Uday, Antonio, Natalia, Natasha, Juan, and Caria....you all provided an excellent customer service experience that we are thankful for!

NICE HOTEL ACROSS FROM THE MARINA IN LAGOS, PORTUGAL…read more========================================== I found this hotel on my own after doing some research because my son and his wife wanted to go to the Algarve for a few days. My husband's cousin who lives in Cascais and speaks Portuguese booked it for us. The price was very good. I think we paid about 650 euros for two rooms for two nights for my son, daughter-in-law and then my husband and I. I liked everything about this hotel except our view in the rear of the property from Room #207. Our balcony basically faced the bus station, but we were also on the end of the building so we had a peekaboo side view of the marina. It was a comfortable and quiet room at night, so that was good. I would highly recommend booking a room on the side that faces the marina in one of the upper floors. They have a great balcony spanning half of the hotel on the fourth floor. It's a great place to relax at the end of the day. Bring your own beverages and snacks. They also have a small pool area up some stairs overlooking the bus station. They have a small bar by reception and the prices are good. You can get towels for the pool or beach, but you need to leave them a 10 euro deposit per towel. That makes sense or people will forget to bring them back. Easy access to activities at the marina. We booked a boat/kayak tour Ponta da Piedade Caves which was a lot of fun through Days of Adventure. It was a short trip on the water which is nice because I get seasick. I did take some Dramamine which helped too.

Spotlessly clean, updated, and quiet!…read more The room is a ten minute walk from the railroad station, which is how we arrived and departed. Each room has a balcony with two chairs and a table. We chose a room on the west side to avoid the sun while enjoying a morning cup of coffee. It was fun to watch the beehive activity of the live market on Saturday morning. Although the bus terminal is behind the hotel, we couldn't hear anything from there with the door closed. In the evenings, we enjoyed the shade on the roof top patio. They had multiple seating areas, loungers, and a pool. The views were remarkable. Staff members were all respectful, kind, and friendly. The breakfast was complete, including pastries, fresh fruit, eggs, bacon, beans, cheeses, cold cuts, juices, and coffee. We chose this hotel primarily because we took the train to Lagos, and didn't want to walk far. But it was also an easy walk to the old town and to the beach.

With so many highs and lows at Vile Galé, I'm really torn with the star rating on this one. I'll…read moredescribe my experience below and let you decide, regardless of the stars given... The Good: * The lobby, pool, buffet, bar and spa area are super nice * Many of, if not all, the staff were multilingual * Excellent facilities. There was a beach volleyball court, tennis court, indoor/outdoor pools, kids pool area, adequate gym, spa, etc. * Room and in-room wifi were solid The Eh: * Beach was across a street, then across rr tracks :-/ * Pool was frigid * One pool towel given per room, which had to be picked up/returned at the spa * The room and hallway color scheme was odd for a beach resort. I know this is strange to say, but an all black hallway and then blood red accents is just weird. Check the pics. * Electricity would turn off when you left the room. Charging electronics and keeping the room cool didn't happen * Bit of an older crowd (avg age 50+) The Bad: * The food. Wow was this poor. The pool bar had some of the worst food of my vacation.. and I got a salad and a turkey wrap aka things that are tough to fudge up. Breakfast (included with my room) was OK, but things were grossly undercooked and the most plentiful items were lunch meats (weird). Lunch/dinner should be a hard pass unless you enjoy a nice mix of bland meats and rice * No free water anywhere. Not in the lobby, gym, by the pool... Nowhere. Dropping 3-5 euro each time you want water is nuts. Considering they warn you not to drink the tap water, there should be other options available besides bottled water. The beer and wine is actually cheaper * No small towels available at/for the gym. Though there's a big sign on the wall to wipe down after you use a machine, I was instructed to bring down a room towel to do so. Double weird considering the gym is in the spa, which is FULL of towels. * The mini bar shouldn't be called a bar. It's a little fridge with 3 waters in it. So, it's a mixed bag here. Many of the problems above are easy to fix, so maybe changes will be made soon. Overall, come here if you have a family and want an all-inclusive experience in the area and don't really care to try the local cuisine. Don't come here as a solo traveler who likes to explore.

I'm writing this review solely based on the amazing customer service I experienced. When I called to cancel my stay the person who answered was extremely helpful and did the best she could to help me catch a different train and sort through the transportation issues I was having. Unfortunately I was still unable to make it to Lagos with the ability to make the most out of my short stay and ended up canceling. They were kind enough to waive any charges, despite me canceling very last minute. I truly hope I am able to travel to Lagos one day so I can fully experience this hotel.

It's a novelty that soon became a minor annoyance for my wife and I, especially at night, when we were trying to minimize movement and noise. And with little room for luggage, they've managed to design bonus tripping hazards into the layout. The staff was polite but stiff, usually speaking in a corporate hush, although the young woman who checked us in projected normally in exquisite English. There was some nickel and diming and enforcement of petty rules. Drinks and snacks provided in the room turned out not to be complimentary as they were at other nice hotels in Portugal. Yet no price list was posted in the room, causing an unwelcome surprise at checkout. Another surprise: Our take-out meal in the lobby on a quiet holiday evening was interrupted by a request to eat in our rooms. There was no "for future reference" warning. We packed up our half-eaten dinner and took to our rooms, feeling like naughty children being disciplined. Later in our stay I asked if I could grab a quick glass of already opened champagne still on ice in the breakfast dining area and surely destined to be poured down the sink. But breakfast had ended so the answer was, well, you know.
