Of all the little theatres - Marlborough, 3&10, Nightingale, Quadrant, etc etc - this one in particular appeals to my alternative, fringe appreciative nature... unlike the others it's not above a pub but above a shop. It 's not very attractive from the outside - the entrace is at the back of Gardner Street and the door leads from graffitied walls directly up a steep and narrow staircase to the theatre - but the ambience upon arrival at the top belies first impression. It's a very small venue, but intimate, cosy. It's a space which I'm sure has been lovingly created. I spoke to owner Emma d'Arcy and she was enthusiastic and passionate about the shows she was putting on. I picked up on this passion in the decor of the theatre. There's nothing glamorous - all low budget I'd say, but it oozes care ... And for all its small size, it's versatile: for one show I saw the audience sat at tables set out cafe style; for another we sat on a platform in rows as though on the train which was the characters' set..
I've been to the Pentameters in Hampstead a couple of times and this is a more than worthy 'sister' theatre I think... read more
