Every June Tulsa is blessed with the Leake car auction. The Leake name goes way back in the…read morehistory of Tulsa starting with the original James C Leake. This year the auction was exceptional with over 800 cars registered for sale. I went through the process of selling a car this year and it is clear to see that they have the procedure down to a fine art. The auction is held in the Expo center near 21st and Yale, the old IPE building. Auction staff are everywhere to help with the registration, automobile advertising, and introductions to the buyers. I was able to sell my car as easily as I had purchased a limousine several years ago. The company takes care of all of the money exchange, title exchange as well as security while they have your car. I do not see how they could improve the process, everything went smoothly and as promised. As a seller, you are invited to the Friday night cocktail party, entry into the auction each day, and a final Sunday breakfast. Your vehicle is also included in the media documentation meant to lure bids from all over. I highly recommend and thank the Leake Auction Company for a happy experience.

I entered a 1928 Ford in the Dallas auction. It's a full custom restoration hotrod done a few years…read moreago. This is a chopped show car, with a modern motor, transmission, air conditioning, stereo, and custom interior. I've owned and shown hotrods since the 80's and have won many trophies with them. I know the countless money that can be put into one, and the endless detail that is given to keeping one clean and as perfect as possible. When my car was being pushed toward the stage Thursday by several yellow-vested men, with another of the yellow-vested guys in the driver's seat, I walked alongside the car to answer any questions potential bidders might have. When my car was two away from going onstage, I turned to get the attention of the man who would need me if the bid neared my reserve amount. As I turned toward my car again to point it out to him, I saw the "driver" getting out by stepping his shoe on the highly polished, painted running board and pivoting his foot on it as he got out. While trying to believe what I just saw, another "driver" then got in by stepping on the same place, and pivoting his shoe on my paint while getting in. I was livid and started yelling at them both, asking what the idea was of stepping on the paint. I got no response from either and took a picture of the second "driver" and the dirty shoe-prints on my paint job, afraid to see how many scratches there would be in the paint when I cleaned it off. The car didn't make reserve, which is fine, and I'm happy to keep it. But as I headed toward the office to complain, I saw that my car wasn't being pushed by one of the padded electric "pusher" machines that the rest had been or by the white-gloved guys in the yellow vests toward the stage. It was being pushed by two guys with their bare hands on the paint. Not a big deal, but wth? At the office I was directed to "Will" who listened to my astonishment that people who were hired to handle people's pride-and-joy show cars didn't care or know any better than to step on the paint job. After hearing my complaint, Will went back into the office for 15 minutes. Then he brought me in to meet Jim Mattingly who was apparently the top man in charge. I repeated the story to him and told him I wanted a refund and my title back, and that I didn't trust the type of people working there to handle my car anymore. He agreed to the refund, and when I asked if he'd had similar complaints about his people doing this, he said "No. That's what running boards were meant for. I'd have done the same thing." Really? Unbelieveable. Maybe back in 1928 when the running board had a rubber mat on it, but not 90 years later as a hot rod with a custom paint job. Miraculously I didn't find any scratches despite the fact that these guys walk across the rocky parking lot to bring the cars in from outside. Be warned of the attitude about show cars at Leake. You care about your car a lot more than they do.
