Very poor customer service experience as a first time customer!…read more I was told to buy a specific reed that I guess only this store sells. I am not local to this store so I reached out to them via email because I had questions regarding the item. Unfortunately, even after patiently waiting for a week I never got any response! If they are so busy and/or don't care about the emails then why they even have that option available to the customers? I called them during their business hours and finally had a luck on the second time. Phone was picked up by what sounded like an old, Caucasian, male. It also sounded like he was the owner and/or manager. From the beginning this person was not welcoming! He was rude, unfriendly and unprofessional for no reasons! Clearly I felt like he doesn't care about the customers or getting any new businesses. Even if I was asking dumb questions because I am new, does it mean he can be sarcastic, frustrated, and shows attitude? I really didn't want to give them any business after my phone interaction, but since I had to get a specific reed and had no other options available, I just reluctantly continued with the transactions. I also noticed that they charge heavy shipping fees and don't have any free shipping option regardless of the purchase amount like other competitors provides. I really wish I don't have to deal with them again. If I do, I hope this male have learned what a customer service is and how it should be provided.

My 12 year-old son started with I.R. Guitar Lessons a week before the covid restrictions went into effect and was able to have one trial lesson with Garrett in person. Since then he's had weekly online lessons; and Garrett is simply fantastic. Simeon refers to his instruction in the superlative. Garrett's ability to challenge while maintaining a supportive--even laid-back--demeanor is exceptional. His patience, willingness to repeat a recommendation or request, and ability to find a teachable moment anywhere make him a great teacher. While we've only experienced one instructor, I'd expect similar results with other instructors as well. If you're considering lessons for yourself or you child, I'd encourage you to move forward. I take in-home guitar lessons with Ian of I.R. Guitar Lessons at my house in Oakland. Every week Ian shows up, and we talk about all matter of guitar chords, scales, songs, etc. Its everything I could want and everything I need. When I started taking guitar lessons as a kid, I had a hard time because my instructor would always push me in his direction. I ended up losing interest because I couldn't learn the songs I wanted, and his attitude was always "my way or the highway." Ian couldn't be a better teacher (and he has a masters degree in guitar) , and he's a good guy, I always look forward to our guitar lessons. Ian has been great. He explains to you what you should be aware of in your finger placements and movements so that you can build on those skills, as opposed to just showing you "how it's done". I feel that I have a better handle on the trajectory of progress in my practicing. There can be instructors who just want you to mimic them, but with little guidance on how to get there. Ian really breaks down the components not just the music theory but also the physicality of the process. And he has an upbeat, enthusiastic personality, so lessons are fun. When he plays a few notes too, you can hear his sensitivity to music that is worth aspiring to, and that's something you want in an instructor, no? read more

I've been taking lessons with Ian for a few months now, and it's been such a great experience. He makes learning guitar fun and easy to follow, even at my beginner skill level. Many years ago, our 3rd grade daughter wanted to play the ukulele, and we found IR Guitar. What luck! She is now in 10th grade and is still taking lessons as an advanced player. She has had Emory and Garrett as teachers, both excellent. Seeing my daughter's tremendous progress was inspiring so I signed up too! I have taken lessons with Ian for 2 years. Adrianna teaches my 10 year old daughter guitar and the two of them have a great time together. Everything about this business makes me happy... the teachers, the flexibility, the price, I would have never imagined guitar lessons becoming my very distract-able daughter's favorite after school activity. I've never been to their studio, they come to my home in Berkeley , and that makes my life much easier, I do enough driving. I picked up guitar when I was young. Even though I took lessons, it never really clicked with me and I got discouraged and stopped. Nov '24 I started taking lessons from Ian. I'm really impressed. I still find it really hard, but Ian's lesson plan unveils things slowly, as I progress. I'm starting to see the bigger picture, which I never had before, even though I took lessons for far longer. I would say if you are frustrated with the guitar, give Ian a try. He will likely get you over the hump and get you enjoying the instrument. I am, for the first time, really enjoying it. read more

Ian has helped me with everything (practice routine, chord shapes, thumb positioning, fingerpicking, strumming, etc.!). He is an amazing teacher and musician. After college, I decided I wanted to learn the cello, so I searched Craigslist to find a teacher. I recognized Matthew's name from Ifshin's and he had a good review from the Berkeley Parents Network, so I decided to schlep up to El Cerrito (from South Berkeley, without a car, with a large instrument) to attend a lesson. Matthew was able to quickly, accurately, fluidly gauge what topics I understood and which I needed help on, and immediately cobbled together a lesson in which I felt not a single minute was wasted. I came away from that lesson feeling like I'd learned more from him in an hour that I'd learned from other teachers in six months. I was hooked. Since I already had a basic background in music theory, Matthew jumped pretty quickly into teaching me straight from repertoire. Matthew himself is quite an excellent musician - very artistic and expressive - and gives similarly excellent instruction on musicianship. He has the unusual ability of being extremely precise about what he wants you, the student, to do to achieve a given effect. (And is very good at being precise from several different approaches until you have that 'a-ha!' moment.) He's been very patient with me on the days that my head just hasn't been in the game and very persistent in making sure I get something out of those lessons, anyhow. Because of his high degree of achievement in cello and his patience, innovation, and keen intellect, Matthew would probably be a wonderful teacher from everyone from complete novices to seasoned professionals. (He does, in fact, teach both these levels, but I can only speak from my own experience. :P ) I have moved towns twice since I started taking lessons with him and, six years later, he is still absolutely worth the transbay drive.

He is amazing, extremely patient and explains musical concepts and the cello as an instrument to an adult with great precision. In addition, he has a great ability to communicate and can provide explanations to you that suits perfectly well to the way you can understand, which is essential for learning. He always has an analogy to an everyday movement when you learn a new technique that is a great help. Matthew is a remarkable person and has a great personality. He can combine his understanding of humans with his teaching extremely well. Although sometimes your own performance might not be the best (e.g. because you could not practice enough for the lesson) at each lesson you learn a lot and have a smile on your face after you leave the lesson. What I like the most about Matthew's teaching is that he has an exceptional sense of creativity and tries to unmask this ability in his students.

We worked together to figure out how to motivate an adult beginner, which is very different from motivating kids. As adults, we tend to be more self-critical. You can hear that it doesn't sound as good as what you know sounds good even after months of practicing, and that is discouraging. His strengths are that he's very patient, good at meeting you where you're at, and finding ways to help you progress without overwhelming you. He's also teaching you enough theory that you're not just parroting a song. His goal is for you to become a true musician, someone who can play with other people, improvise, and not just karaoke through a guitar song. He and I also had similar musical tastes so his song options aligned with songs I loved such as Beatles, Chili Peppers, & Ozzy Osbourne.
